MJ - The Musical : 2020 am Broadway

Broadway’s Michael Jackson: ‘Ain’t Too Proud’ Star Ephraim Sykes

The Tony-nominated performer will lead the cast of “MJ the Musical,” which is scheduled to open next summer.

The Michael Jackson musical has found its King of Pop.

Ephraim Sykes, a limber-legged, scene-stealing, Tony-nominated performer in “Ain’t Too Proud,” will jump from one jukebox musical to another when he stars in “MJ the Musical,” which is scheduled to open on Broadway next summer.

Sykes, a 34-year-old from St. Petersburg, Fla., is a gifted dancer who was trained at the Alvin Ailey/Fordham University B.F.A. program, toured with the Ailey II company for two years, and this year was named the outstanding male dancer in a Broadway show at the Chita Rivera Awards, which honor dance in theater and film.

He has appeared in six Broadway musicals, beginning as a replacement member of the ensemble in “The Little Mermaid,” and he was a member of the original Broadway cast of “Hamilton.” In “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations” he has his first major role, portraying David Ruffin, who was one of the group’s lead singers.

“MJ the Musical” arrives at a challenging time for the pop singer’s legacy, which has been tarnished by renewed allegations that he sexually abused young boys. But he remains acknowledged as one of the greatest American pop artists ever; his songs continue to be ubiquitous and his fan base intense, and the musical’s producers, after canceling a pre-Broadway run in Chicago, have determinedly pushed toward a Broadway opening.

Earlier this month the production finished an eight-week work session in New York, with Sykes leading the cast during the day while continuing to perform in “Ain’t Too Proud” at night. It was the show’s third and final developmental workshop; now the writers will revise the material in anticipation of rehearsals starting in May.

The lead producers are Lia Vollack and the Michael Jackson Estate. Vollack, who previously headed Columbia Live Stage, the theatrical division of Sony Pictures Entertainment, recently formed her own production company; Columbia Live Stage and Sony Music, which was Jackson’s longtime record label, remain investors in the musical.

The show, which will feature many of Jackson’s best known songs, both as a solo artist and as a member of the Jackson 5, has a highly regarded creative team: the book is by Lynn Nottage, a playwright who has twice won the Pulitzer Prize, and the show is directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, an English ballet dancer and choreographer who won a Tony Award for “An American in Paris.”

Nottage and Wheeldon said earlier this year that they were wrestling with how best to represent the complexities of Jackson’s life and legacy in the show, which is set in 1992, as Jackson was preparing for a tour to promote his “Dangerous” album. Since that interview, the show has declined to offer any specifics about whether and how the musical might reference the abuse allegations or other issues that have complicated how Jackson is now viewed.

“The production is not commenting on the content of show as it is in development,” said a spokesman, Rick Miramontez.

Audition notices suggest that, in addition to the adult Jackson, anticipated characters include Jackson at age 10; Jackson in his late teens and early 20s; a female documentary filmmaker and journalist; Jackson’s father Joseph, and Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown.

“MJ the Musical” is scheduled to begin previews July 6 and to open Aug. 13 at Broadway’s Neil Simon Theater.

Michael Jackson Broadway Musical Casts Its King of Pop

MJ, the upcoming musical set to Michael Jackson’s hits, has found its King of Pop. Tony Award nominee Ephraim Sykes has been tapped to portray the singer on Broadway, producers Lia Vollack and the Michael Jackson Estate announced on Thursday.

Sykes can currently be seen performing onstage in the hit production Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations as recording artist David Ruffin. The role earned him a Tony Award nomination in 2019 for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical. He was previously seen in Hamilton, Motown the Musical and Newsies.

The casting news comes after the production was pushed back and renamed MJ. Now set for an August 2020 opening, the show will feature a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, who made her Broadway writing debut with the play Sweat, which was nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Play and Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role for both Johanna Day and Michelle Wilson. Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph.

“Ephraim Sykes is a bona fide triple threat and dynamic rising star on Broadway. I am honored to be working with him on this exciting new production,” Wheeldon said in a statement.

..." Forever :heart Michael Jackson

West Side Story’ Revival, Michael Jackson & Bob Dylan Musicals Among Broadway’s Most Anticipated Shows

    ...Broadway’s Thriller

If Mrs. Doubtfire is set to wade into the pool of shifting social attitudes, MJ The Musical could splash up a tidal wave. One of the most popular musical icons of the 20th Century – and the most divisive of the 21st – Michael Jackson is getting his own jukebox musical. On first consideration, the concept seems ill-timed, at best. This year’s HBO documentary Leaving Neverland, chronicling two men who say they were groomed and molested as children by Jackson, delivered what many would have thought was a fatal blow to the King of Pop’s reputation, notwithstanding Dave Chappelle‘s skepticism and the vehement denials of the Jackson Estate, a producer of MJ.

But there are other reputations to consider with MJ, and they’re exemplary, worthy of the benefit of the doubt. The book of the musical is written by Lynn Nottage, winner of not one but two Pulitzer Prizes for drama (Ruined, 2009, and Sweat, 2017). The director and choreographer is Christopher Wheeldon, who won a Tony Award for his 2015 choreography of Broadway’s An American in Paris. Ephraim Sykes, who was Tony nominated this year for his performance in Ain’t Too Proud and was an original cast member of Hamilton, will play Michael Jackson. Sykes is a performer whose time for the solo spotlight has come.

Exactly how, if, to what extent and how convincingly MJ addresses the molestation accusations won’t be known until audiences get a look (previews begin at the Neil Simon Theatre on July 6, with an opening of Aug. 13). What we do know is that the musical centers around rehearsals for Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour and features more than 25 Jackson songs. Sykes has told Essence magazine that he hopes “to show how human [Jackson] truly was,” and that, “hopefully we can all have a little bit more empathy with him, his downfalls, his demons, his struggles…”

Aside from whether the show works or not, MJ promises to offer a glimpse at how a top-flight creative team navigates some of theater’s foundational questions, of commerce and art, of fact and fiction and how perspective and affinity shape each, and of who, when all is said and done, is worthiest of our devotion. A decade after his death, Michael Jackson isn’t going anywhere, but neither are his accusers. How Broadway deals with that is a story in and of itself, waiting to be written.

  • MJ The Musical postponed until September

    May 13, 2020

This has not been communicated or confirmed by the Estate of Michael Jackson or the Musical itself but the Broadway League has confirmed that all productions in New York will now be offering refunds and exchanges for performances through September 6.

Broadway shutdown on March 12 due to Coronavirus COVID-19 and was supposed to first re-open on April 12 then postponed to June 7 which did not affect the MJ Musical.

However, yesterday it was announced that all productions will be on hold until September 6 meaning MJ The Musical is now postponed as it was due to start in July.

“While all Broadway shows would love to resume performances as soon as possible, we need to ensure the health and well-being of everyone who comes to the theatre—behind the curtain and in front of it—before shows can return. The Broadway League’s membership is working in cooperation with the theatrical unions, government officials, and health experts to determine the safest ways to restart our industry,” said Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin.

We recommend you contact your point of sale if you have tickets for MJ the Musical during that period.

  • MJ The Musical delayed… again!

    October 9, 2020

    mjmusical21-1024x1024.jpg

MJ The Musical which was supposed to open last July, originally postponed and cancelled from Chicago and now with the pandemic, the show was few times delayed until March 8, 2021. Today, the Broadway league announced further delay until May 30, 2021 which can again be reviewed depending on COVID-19.

Meaning the show will not open on March 8 as shown on the website.

This is a huge stress for the nearly 97,000 workers who rely on Broadway for their livelihood and an annual economic impact of $14.8 billion to the city.

Depending on the level of the pandemic, this may change again. Ticket sales were already poor due to a low interest from the general public and the anger of many MJ fans against Lynn Nottage’s comments in a couple of reputed press outlets confirming she believes the men in the fake documentary “Leaving Neverland”. [Nottage wrote the book for the musical]

We will update you as soon as we have more information.

UPDATE: The MJ Musical confirmed it will now open in September 2021:

On the other side of the country, in Las Vegas, same story with no definitive dates of re-opening MJ ONE. The musical master piece from Cirque du Soleil keeps postponing its re-opening which is now set for November/December but again, due to COVID-19, it is unclear if this will really be the date for fans to refill the theatre of Mandalay Bay Resort!

Eine offizielle Bestätigung steht noch aus. Also alles bitte unter Vorbehalt.
