    GUT VISION

In 1988 at the age of 26, Radio and Television plugger Guy Holmes quit his job as Head of
Promotions at Island Records, and along with his assistant Caroline Lewis, he set up the Gut
Reactions promotions company. The company's primary ambition was to become Britain's number
1 plugging team, but things changed when Holmes by chance heard a tune whilst travelling home
from a night on the tiles. The song was 'I'm Too Sexy' and the band was Right Said Fred.

Holmes struck a deal with the band but despite his confidence that the song was a hit, he could
not find a label to put it out. His solution was to release the song independently on his own newly
formed label Tug Records. Right Said Fred went on to sell 6 million singles and 5 million albums
around the world and Tug (now renamed Gut) were in the record business.

we treat Napster like any other retailer. We should treat all digital distribution as an extension of
    our retail sales."

Major players have been forced to cut jobs amid a global slump in music sales as consumers
download more music from the Internet. Some independent producers argue that the major
labels' problems, and the industry's, stem from the majors' arrogance.

"The indies tried to do business with Napster, while the majors tried to shut it down," said Guy
Holmes, founder of Gut Recordings, who counts Right Said Fred, the singer of "I'm Too Sexy,"
    among his artists.

Guy Holmes, founder of Gut Records, agrees. 'Every new genre of music, from rap to heavy
metal and in between, has been broken and developed by independent labels. Major labels have
never done it - not once.

'The live underground scene in the UK today is the healthiest I've ever seen it, and I've been
doing this for 23 years. I'm out seeing bands three or four nights a week. There are more bands
playing, and more demand than ever.'

Holmes is critical of the majors' belated response to bootlegging on the internet and in 'emerging
markets' such as eastern Europe and China. But he remains confident about long-term prospects
for the industry: 'Consumption has increased; it's just that people are not paying for it. But that
    will change eventually.'

Independent record labels may try to fix the UK singles chart this week in an attempt to prove it
is not secure, according to a label boss.

Downloads will count towards the Top 40 for the first time this week and chart authorities have
    said it will be safe.

But Guy Holmes, chairman of Gut Records, which has had success with Tom Jones, Space and
Uniting Nations, said some labels could try to expose flaws.

"It's not a slight problem - it's a huge problem," he told BBC News.

He said the unnamed labels may attempt to download specific singles many times in an attempt to
    inflate their chart success.

They may choose songs released by other labels, including majors, to prove their point, he said.

"I know of two different labels who are considering buying records online because they believe it's
the only way they can teach the chart people that the security of the chart is no longer there," he
    said.

"The people who have instigated the chart have failed dismally in their responsibilities to make
and keep our charts secure and to stop people with large amounts of money being able to take
    advantage of it."

Legal downloads bought from eligible internet services are being added to sales of CD singles and
other formats to compile the Top 40. The first new rundown will be revealed on Sunday.

Mr Holmes said it would take several thousand additional sales to push a song from number 20
into the Top 10 and onto Top of the Pops.

With songs costing about 79p-99p each online, that would be money well spent for some labels, he added.

  • Jackson Gets To Work On New Album
April 18, 2006 -Lars Brandle, London

Jackson's as-yet untitled album will be his first studio set since 2001's "Invincible," which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than 2 million copies in the United States alone, according to Nielsen Soundscan.
Many industry observers expected "Invincible" to draw curtains on Jackson's long-time, fruitful recording career with Sony Music when he publicly feuded with the label for its efforts in promoting the record.
Holmes appointment to effectively manage Jackson's career comes on the heels of reports last week that the artist, in a move to stave off insolvency, has reached a deal with creditors to refinance more than $200 million in loans secured by his stake in the Beatles' song catalog.

Michael Jackson has taken a step towards a return to his musical career by signing an exclusive recording agreement with Bahrain-based Two Seas Records. The label is a joint venture between the embattled pop star and Abdulla Hamad Al-Khalifa.

Jackson, who has been in Bahrain since shortly after his June 2005 acquittal on child molestation charges, is said to be working on new material. A new album is tentatively scheduled for release in "late 2007," according to a statement.

"I am incredibly excited about my new venture and I am enjoying being back in the studio making music," Jackson says.

U.K. record executive Guy Holmes has been tapped as CEO of the Two Seas label and will also be tasked with managing Jackson's other business interests.

Holmes will also remain chairman of Gut Records, which last spring scored a massive U.K. hit with Crazy Frog's version of "Axel F," essentially a popular ringtone attached to a manic animated character. Gut has also released music from Tears For Fears, the Wildhearts, Sparks, Fannypack and Aswad.

Holmes' Gut label is already promoting an association with Jackson, as a digital player on its Web site is streaming a Hi Tack remix of his 1983 hit "Say Say Say," subtitled "Waiting for U."

In his earliest solo years, Jackson recorded for Motown, which had been home to his sibling group, the Jackson 5. The group shifted to Epic in the mid-1970s and in 1979 released Jackson's breakout solo album, "Off the Wall." His international superstardom was solidified with subsequent albums "Thriller" (1982), "Bad" (1987) and "Dangerous" (1992).

His final studio set for the Epic was 2001's "Invincible," which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than 2 million copies in the United States alone, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

Jackson accused the label of poor promotion, which led to a public spat with label parent Sony and its then president, Tommy Mottola. Epic has continued to mine the artist's career with a string of releases since then.

Holmes appointment to effectively manage Jackson's career comes on the heels of reports last week that Jackson, in a move to stave off insolvency, has reached a deal with creditors to refinance more than $200 million in loans secured by his stake in the Beatles' song catalog.

Jackson had been living off his 50% share of the Sony/ATV Music publishing catalog, which includes more than 250 copyrights from the Beatles. Jackson purchased ATV in 1985. Ten years later, in a deal orchestrated by his longtime attorney John Branca, Jackson merged ATV with Sony's music publishing division; the entire catalog is valued at around $1 billion.

  • Michael Jackson starts work on new studio album!

    Reported by - Wednesday, April 19 2006

Michael Jackson is about to hit the studio to begin work on his first studio album since 2001's "Invincible," which was a relative flop for Jackson in comparison to his previous albums.

The king of pop now has a new label, a new producer and wants to relaunch his once-successful music career.

A statement released by Jackson's new label - Two Seas Records - said that British music industry executive, Guy Holmes, had been named CEO of the newly formed joint venture between Jackson and Bahrain royal family member, Abdulla Hamad Al-Khalifa.

"I am incredibly excited about my new venture, and I am enjoying being back in the studio making music," Jackson said.

According to the statement, Holmes will oversee the making of the new album and will also take care of all of Jackson's business interests. This news comes after reports last week that the artist, in a move to stave off insolvency, has reached a deal with creditors to refinance more than $200 million in loans secured by his stake in the Beatles' song catalog.

Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album still remains the bestselling album of all time having sold over 26 million copies in the US alone.

Jackson's new as-yet untitled album will be released world-wide in 2007.

Michael Jackson will in seiner neuen Heimat Bahrein wieder eine Platte aufnehmen.

Jackson to make album in Bahrain
    Wednesday, 19 April 2006

Singer Michael Jackson is to record his first new album since 2001 on a label based in the Gulf state of Bahrain.
Jackson, who has lived in the Middle East since being acquitted of child abuse charges, is expected to release the new record next year.

The 47-year-old said he is "incredibly excited" about the new project.

Guy Holmes, chairman of UK label Gut Records, is expected to manage the album's production and look after Jackson's business interests.

    Charity record

Jackson has struck the deal with a member of the Bahraini royal family Abdulla Hamad Al-Khalifa, according to a statement from the Two Seas record company.

Mr Holmes, who has been named manager of the new venture, is planning to divide his time between London and Bahrain.

"I am enjoying being back in the studio making music," added Jackson, whose last album release was Invincible in 2001.

Jackson's US spokeswoman, Raymone Bain, said she was not aware of the agreement, but added that his charity record for Hurricane Katrina had been released on the Two Seas label.

A deal with a major label to distribute the album has yet to be announced.

Jackson's deal with Epic, a label belonging to Sony BMG, recently expired. They declined to comment on the singer's latest plans.

The company is currently re-releasing 20 of the singer's hits in a dual CD and DVD format in the UK, which have regularly been settling inside the Top 20.

  • Jackson Turns to British Veteran For His Comeback

    By Adam Sherwin

Holmes has a reputation for rebranding older stars for the contemporary market. In 1999 he relaunched Tom Jones, then 59, with an album of duets that matched the Welsh veteran with stars such as Robbie Williams.

The single Sex Bomb made Jones an unlikely dancefloor hero and the Reloaded album sold five million copies worldwide.

However, Holmes, who has spent 30 years in the British music industry, has inflicted several novelty acts on record-buyers.

When record companies turned down the dance-pop act Right Said Fred, Holmes released their I’m Too Sexy track on his own Gut Records. The song topped the British and US charts in 1992 and their debut album sold five million copies.

Last year Holmes spotted the hit single potential of the irritating Crazy Frog ringtone. A dance version topped the international singles charts and, under Holmes’s tutelage, the ringtone spawned an album of Crazy Hits and a Christmas single. Gut has also released records by Aswad, Jimmy Somerville and 1970s survivors, Sparks.

Jackson observers are sceptical, but the 350 million-selling star, who once recorded for the Motown label, is said to be planning a pop comeback.

Unveiling the partnership, he said: “I am incredibly excited about my new venture and I am enjoying being back in the studio making music.â€

Holmes, the head of Two Seas Records, will divide his time between London and Bahrain, oversee the recording of Jackson’s album and managing the star’s business interests. The album will be released in “late 2007â€, according to a statement on behalf of the singer.

Jackson’s recording contract with Sony has expired, along with residual goodwill between label and artist. Holmes will shop the album around record companies, who would still be interested in an album demonstrating signs of the form that produced the 52-million selling Thriller.

Holmes will seek to license Jackson tracks to film and advertisements and is a believer in mobile download sales as the music industry’s future. He recently said: “My view is that the iPod is an antique, and that phones should be iPods.â€

Jackson hopes to concentrate on his music after negotiations with financiers produced an agreement to ease debts of about £200 million.

Michael has also requested a Jay-Z feature so keep your fingers crossed http://www.m-jackson.com/info/news.html

  • An update from Billboard

Updating a story first posted here this afternoon, embattled pop star Michael Jackson is eyeing a collaboration with superstar rapper 50 Cent. The first fruit of a potential pairing would likely appear on a mixtape spearheaded by DJ Whoo Kid, who tells Billboard.com he is heading in two weeks to Jackson's new adopted home of Bahrain to take possession of tracks Jackson has been working on in his home studio.

50 Cent's spokesperson stresses that at deadline, the artist has made no commitment to appear on the mixtape or on Jackson's next studio album, which will be released on his new Two Seas label.

Sources say the first single from that as-yet-untitled project, "Now That I Found Love," will be released Nov. 21. The track is being produced by Jackson and longtime collaborator Bruce Swedien, who engineered the classic "Thriller" and co-produced the album "Dangerous."

As previously reported, Two Seas Records is a joint venture between Jackson and Abdulla Hamad Al-Khalifa. U.K. record executive Guy Holmes has been tapped as CEO of the label and will also be tasked with managing Jackson's other business interests.

  • Jacko & Fiddy - It's On?
    Dienstag, 25.04.2006

  • Neues Album 2007, Neuer Manager, Neuer Plattenvertrag

    25.04.2006
    By TLC

Doch ob die erste Single des neuen Albums „Now That I Found Love“ wirklich schon dieses Jahr erscheinen wird, bleibt abzuwarten.
