Lawyers for Michael Jackson's estate, along with Katherine Jackson's lawyer, went to court this morning, seeking temporary financial allowances -- and Katherine claims she needs the money to live.

The matter was put off until August 3, when lawyers will all appear in court.

UPDATE: 2:29 PM PT: Lawyers for the estate wrote in a written declaration, "We are informed that Mrs. Jackson was also financially dependent upon Michael Jackson and that other than extremely modest social security benefits, Mrs. Jackson has no independent means of support."

The declaration continues: "Michael Jackson died 4 weeks ago. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the Special Administrators to be authorized to pay family allowance for the benefits of Minor Children in order to ensure that the Minor Children's needs for maintenance and support are met."

The document also says other than social security benefits which the kids have not yet received, they are totally dependent on the estate for their care and support.

Judge delays Jackson ruling, will appoint attorney for kids

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A judge Monday said he will appoint an attorney to represent the legal rights of Michael Jackson's three children and then delayed a decision by a week on whether he will approve contracts involving the singer's estate.

Judge Mitchell Beckloff said he was concerned that the interests of the children, which he said may not be the same as their grandmother's, were not being represented.

Beckloff has not yet chosen someone to represent the children's legal interests yet.

Katherine Jackson was appointed last week as the guardian for the children, but she was not made the guardian for their interest in her son's estate.

Beckloff also delayed a decision involving contracts between AEG Live and merchandizer Bravado after lawyers for Katherine Jackson argued that AEG Live should not be given a share of perpetual rights of video shot of Jackson's rehearsals for his "This Is It" shows in London, England.

Lawyers for AEG Live and Bravado told the judge the estate stands to lose money if approval of the deals were delayed beyond Monday.

"The longer we wait, the more time passes, frankly, the less interest there will be on the part of the public to come see it," said Kathy Jorrie, a lawyer for AEG Live, which promoted the London shows.

The judge earlier approved a contract between Jackson's estate, AEG Live and Columbia Pictures for use of the video for a feature film planned to hit theaters at the end of October. That movie, however, depends on the judge also settling differences between Katherine Jackson, the estate's special administrators and AEG Live concerning who should profit from the video.

An AEG Live lawyer said at least 80 hours of video was shot by photographers hired by AEG Live in the weeks before Jackson's June 25 death.

Burt Levitch, Katherine Jackson's lawyer, said she is concerned that the three children might be included in the video. Jorrie said that while she has not seen the video, she was told no children appear in it.

Jorrie said the original contract between Jackson and AEG Live for his 50 London shows gave the company a share in the concert video profits. Levitch said that agreement did not cover rehearsal video.

Jorrie told Beckloff that AEG Live has already made many concessions to the estate and could not make more. She suggested the company might walk away from the deals if they are asked to make more changes, as demanded by Katherine Jackson.

As the courtroom proceedings were going on, and before a ruling was even made, Sony Pictures issued a news release Monday announcing it would deliver the movie -- "This Is It" -- to theaters starting October 30 "with the full support of The Estate of Michael Jackson."

Meanwhile, it was announced Monday that the coroner has completed a "thorough and comprehensive" report into the death of Jackson, but the Los Angeles Police Department has requested that the report not be released because of its ongoing investigation and "the cause and manner of death remain confidential."

Jermaine Jackson, Michael Jackson's older brother, told CNN's Larry King last week that he likes the deals, which he said could bring in nearly $100 million into the estate.

The Sony announcement said the film "will be drawn from hundreds of hours of rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage, captured in high definition with state-of-the-art digital sound as the late singer was preparing for his concert series in London."

"The film, which will also offer select sequences in 3-D, will provide a unique career retrospective and feature interviews with some of Jackson's closest friends and creative collaborators," Sony said.

The news release, which was apparently written before the judge's delay, included a quote from John Branca, one of two men appointed by the court as temporary administrators of Jackson's estate.

"Our goal is to work with partners who treat Michael's legacy with dignity and respect, while allowing us to substantially build the value of his estate for the benefit of Mrs. Katherine Jackson, Michael's three children and the charitable causes that meant so much to him during his life," Branca said.

Branca, who was Jackson's lawyer for several years, and John McClain, a music executive and longtime Jackson friend, were named in Jackson's will as executors. Katherine Jackson is considering a challenge of their control of the estate.

    Michael Jackson Merchandise Hearing

Posted Aug 17th 2009 4:33PM by TMZ Staff

The lawyer for Michael Jackson's kids is set to appear in court for the first time today, as lawyers for the estate and Katherine Jackson's lawyers try to reach an agreement on merchandising all things Michael.

UPDATE 7:10 PM -- And we're done for the day. Biggest headline -- the judge has approved a major Jackson merchandising deal, but there is still one more deal (with AEG for a Jackson memorabilia tour) to be decided upon.

UPDATE 7:03 PM -- The judge has set an evidentiary hearing for Friday -- so the AEG deal won't be approved (or denied) until then.

UPDATE 6:45 PM -- An attorney for AEG says the company wants the deal taken care of this week.

UPDATE 6:41 PM -- And we're back on the record.

UPDATE 6:34 PM -- The judge has ordered a short recess in the hopes all sides can reach an agreement on the AEG deal today.

UPDATE 6:32 PM -- The lawyer representing Jackson's kids isn't sure the AEG deal is the best deal out there.

UPDATE 6:24 PM -- One of the lawyers for the special administrators is worried that if the AEG deal isn't approved soon, AEG will pull it off the table.

UPDATE 6:15 PM -- All parties involved continue to express the time constraint they are under -- everyone wants the deals done ASAP.

UPDATE 6:10 PM -- The attorney for the kids just said she is not objecting the AEG deal.

UPDATE 6:05 PM -- An attorney for Katherine just suggested the lawyers for estate have pulled the guardian ad litem towards their side.

UPDATE 5:58 PM -- The deal with Bravado, to produce various different kinds of Jackson memorabilia, has been approved. This deal will generate millions of dollars for the Jackson estate.

UPDATE 5:50 PM -- Howard Weitzman, the attorney for the special administrators, has stated that one of the beneficiaries approves the AEG deal (to put on a Jackson memorabilia tour), but one is against it. We've been hearing Katherine is not happy about the arrangement, so she is probably the one who has objected.

UPDATE 5:35 PM -- The judge has set a tentative date (September 9) to hear Katherine's safe harbor petition. What that means is that Katherine wants to file an objection to the special administrators, but doesn't want to do so if it would be considered protesting the will. Jackson's will contains a no-contest clause -- meaning anyone who challenges it loses their inheritance rights.

UPDATE 5:30 PM -- The judge said that if it weren't for Katherine Jackson's procedural posturing, both parties would not have to spend as much time in court

UPDATE 5:13 PM -- The judge said he agrees with Lodise -- there needs to be a simpler process put in place so the special administrators of Jackson's estate don't have to go before the judge to do every single thing.

UPDATE 5:11 PM -- The judge wants to come up with a trial date for Katherine Jackson's objection to the permanent appointment of the special administrators.

UPDATE 5:10 PM -- Margaret Lodise, the guardian ad litem for Jackson's kids, has submitted a report to the court.

UPDATE 4:57 PM -- The lawyers are getting into place.

UPDATE 4:47 PM -- Claire Elisabeth Fields Cruise, the woman who claims to be the bio mom of MJ's kids, is in the courtroom. Let the fun begin!

  • Katherine Jackson Wants Help with MJ Deal
Posted Aug 20th 2009 4:46PM by TMZ Staff
Katherine Jackson won't give her blessing to a key deal in Michael Jackson's estate until her financial peeps have a chance to review it.

Katherine's lawyers went to court today, asking the judge to give her permission to show the confidential AEG memorabilia deal to her financial advisors. Under the current court protective order, she's only allowed to show the unredacted version to her lawyers.

Meanwhile, AEG is threatening to pull out of the deal, because the company is worried people are quickly losing interest in an MJ memorabilia tour.

Katherine's lawyer, Burt Levitch, thinks AEG may be crying wolf just to ram the deal through.
