Little Richard: 'Come and see Macon's pride and joy'
By Maggie Large
TELEGRAPH STAFF WRITER
Little Richard is in Macon, and he says he's going to put on a heck of a show.
That in itself is news these days, especially with all the wrangling this week over who's paying to set up his piano.
The Macon native hasn't played in Macon since a 2001 show at the Macon Coliseum, during which he wowed fans with his rollicking piano stylings and random proclamations.
Though he's in his 70s, Richard's not in his dotage. He was recently in a commercial for Motorola telling a phone booth full of musicians to "shut up!"
The "architect of rock 'n' roll" took a few minutes to talk with The Telegraph recently as his stretch limousine idled on a Hollywood street.
"Hold on baby, someone's at my limo window," Richard said as he paused to chat with an adoring fan.
He was "doing some business" on the West Coast before heading to the Bahamas to record with singing legends Stevie Wonder and Patti LaBelle. It's for Michael Jackson's Katrina benefit single, tentatively titled "From the Bottom of My Heart."
"Patti's an old friend of mine from the old school," he said.
Abreast of current trends, he's made room for hip-hop artists, including Will Smith and Kanye West. "Jesus Walks" is one of his favorite songs, he said.
"I think it's beautiful. These people are singing and expressing what they see and how they live."
Now living in the Nashville, Tenn., area, where he has two sisters and a brother, Richard said Music City suits him just fine.
"I've always loved country music," Richard said. "I'm talking about Hank Williams. I go back to Minnie Pearl, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and Clint Black."
He's happy to show his hometown a good time.
"I want everybody to come," he said. "Black, white, yellow, brown. I want them all to come and see Macon's pride and joy."
