Lionsgate Motion Picture Chair Gives Update On ‘Michael 2’ Estimated Production Start & Release Date

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chairman Adam Fogelson gave an update on the highly anticipated sequel to the studio’s Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, telling analysts on a Q1 call that “we are targeting a production start towards the end of this year or early next.”

As far as when we’ll see the sequel to Liongate’s highest grossing $1 billion-plus movie, Fogelson shared “I think that end of calendar ’27 and the first half of calendar ’28 would be the current thought of roughly where the movie would go.”

Fogelson couched these statements by emphasizing, “we’re not ready to announce everything at the moment.”

He was asked by analysts on today’s call about the profit structure of the first pic, particularly in regards to its share with the Jackson estate and Universal (which licensed foreign), as well as the budget of the sequel given the fact that there’s an amount of footage already banked from the first production.

“We do have a number of sequences, particularly some big musical sequences, that were shot previously, that are almost sure to be incorporated, but we are mostly focused right now on how to make sure we can deliver, at the right price, the biggest, best sequel,” says Fogelson, “That is what the audience is going to want and deserve after the experience we gave them the first time. So we’re not ready to give guidance on the budget yet, but we certainly will be able to take advantage of some stuff that we previously shot, as I had said before.”

The release date of Michael was delayed from November 2025 to the final weekend of April 2026. During production, the Jackson estate overlooked the inclusion of one of the pop singer’s accusers in the John Logan written script. The sequence was already shot, and forced $50M of reshoots, which the Jackson estate covered. Still, there was a significant amount of footage shot on the Antoine Fuqua directed, Graham King production which provided the catalyst for a sequel.

Fogelson explained that Lionsgate views the profitability on its films in a ten-year cycle and that Michael will have “a long tail.”

Universal generated a bulk of Michael‘s $643.7M oreign box office sans Russia, C.I.S. and Japan which Lionsgate’s foreign sales arm managed.

Added Fogelson, “There’s nothing unusual as far as profit being shared among participants.”

The studio boss added that the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, is one of the studio’s most best tested.

Jaafar Jackson Joins Will Smith In Action Thriller ‘Supermax’

On the heels of his breakout turn as his late uncle Michael Jackson in Michael, the $1B+ grosser from Lionsgate, Jaafar Jackson has found his next project in Supermax, the action thriller from Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax.

Jackson joins the previously announced Will Smith and AnnaSophia Robb. The details of his role are being kept under wraps, but it’s said to be pivotal to the film’s central plot, revolving around two FBI agents (Smith and Robb) investigating a seemingly impossible murder within the impenetrable walls of a maximum-security prison.

David Gordon Green is directing from a script by David Weil and David J. Rosen. The Picture Company partners Andrew Rona & Alex Heineman are producing alongside Smith and Adam Fishbach for Westbrook Studios.

Scribes Weil and Rosen will exec produce alongside associate producer Natalie Laine Williams. Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman, President of Film Alexandra Loewy, COO Thom Zadra and SVP Spencer Ela also will exec produce, alongside James Lassiter and Miguel Melendez for Westbrook Studios.

CAA Media Finance brokered the deal between Miramax and Amazon MGM, which is closing a deal for worldwide distribution rights, with plans for Supermax to stream on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Jackson garnered critical acclaim for his transformative turn as the King of Pop — no easy role to take on, and a highly personal one — in Michael, the film from Antoine Fuqua, which now stands as the highest grossing biopic of all time, ahead of Oppenheimer and Bohemian Rhapsody. He surely has plenty of offers coming in on the heels of his success there; stay tuned to see how he fills out his dance card.

Jackson is represented by CAA and Sloane Offer Weber & Dern.

Michael Jackson Blocks Himself From A New No. 1 Hit — Again

Less than a month ago, Beyoncé released a new single titled “Morning Dew (Donk).” At first, some fans thought the track might offer an initial taste of an upcoming album – the as-yet-untitled Act III, which follows Renaissance and Cowboy Carter is expected soon – but that is not the case. The song instead leads the forthcoming twentieth-anniversary rerelease of B’Day, and it quickly became a major hit.

“Morning Dew (Donk)” nearly earned Beyoncé another No. 1 on one streaming tally, but she was blocked from the summit by perhaps the most successful solo artist of all time. As Beyoncé’s latest single falls, Michael Jackson nearly scores another posthumous leader — but once again, he stops himself from reaching the peak position.

Michael Jackson Misses Out on a New No. 1 Again

“Chicago” leaps from No. 4 to No. 2 on the R&B Streaming Songs chart, which ranks the most-played R&B tracks in the United States on streaming platforms. Jackson’s hit trades places with “Morning Dew (Donk).” Beyoncé’s single slips from its all-time high of No. 2 to No. 4, while “Chicago” returns to the runner-up rung.

“Chicago” has now spent a lucky 13 weeks on the R&B Streaming Songs chart. It first reached No. 2 in June, nearly two months ago, and this frame it matches that previously-established peak.

Michael Jackson Blocks Himself From No. 1

“Billie Jean” continues to lead the R&B Streaming Songs chart, preventing “Chicago” from advancing to the loftiest space. Jackson occupies both the Nos. 1 and 2 positions on the ranking.

“Chicago” debuted on the R&B Streaming Songs chart in June 2014, but it took 12 years for the song to reach its peak. When it first climbed to No. 2 earlier this summer, “Billie Jean” was also the track that blocked it from ruling.

“Billie Jean” Has Now Led the Way for a Dozen Weeks

“Billie Jean” has now led the R&B Streaming Songs chart for 12 weeks. That is twice as long as the combined reigns of Jackson’s other two champions, “Thriller” and “Don’t Matter to Me,” his collaboration with Drake.
Michael Jackson Has Two No. 2-Peaking Tunes

“Chicago” is one of only two Jackson tracks to peak at No. 2 on the R&B Streaming Songs chart. “Human Nature” has also missed out on ruling by only one space, and it pushed to that slot only a few weeks ago.

“Human Nature” did not reach the ranking until May of this year, following the release of the Michael biopic. One week after debuting, the longtime favorite nearly led the charge, but “Billie Jean” kept it from the throne.

Michael Jackson Controls the Top Three

Jackson fills all three of the highest positions on the current R&B Streaming Songs chart. “Billie Jean” remains at No. 1, “Chicago” advances to No. 2 and “Beat It” climbs to No. 3.

“Beat It” steps up from No. 5 and returns to its already-established peak. The smash first settled into third place during the same week that “Human Nature” failed to conquer the tally by one rung.

Michael Jackson Fills a Third of the R&B Chart

The R&B Streaming Songs chart contains only 15 positions, and Jackson occupies five of them — exactly one-third of the entire ranking. In addition to “Billie Jean,” “Chicago” and “Beat It” appearing within the top three, “Human Nature” holds at No. 7. “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” moves in the opposite direction, falling from No. 8 to No. 13 during, coincidentally, its thirteenth week on the tally.

Star Trek Meets Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” In Strange New Worlds’ Horror Episode

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds pays a perfect homage to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" while filming its new horror episode.

Directed by Axelle Carolyn and written by Robbie Thompson, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 2, "The Griffin Incident" is a startlingly spooky affair. Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck), and Lt. Commander James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) board a ghost ship, the USS Griffin, and face their deepest fears thanks to the malignant entity possessing the derelict starship.

On her Instagram, Christina Chong shared a photo dump from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 2, that concludes with a brilliant video of herself leading the zombies as they perform Michael Jackson's signature dance from his "Thriller" music video. Joining Chong and the zombies are director Axelle Carolyn and writer Robbie Thompson. Check it out below:

Christina Chong is a talented dancer and singer, and she matches Michael Jackson's iconic moves from his classic music video directed by John Landis. All that was really missing was Vincent Price's eerie voice-over. Of course, it's impossible not to think of "Thriller" when La'an is surrounded by zombies in the USS Griffin's Engineering bay.

The timing of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' horror episode and "Thriller" homage couldn't be more in sync with the zeitgeist. Just a few months ago, Michael, director Antoine Fuqua's biopic about the King of Pop, grossed over one billion dollars worldwide and reignited the pop culture relevance and global love for Michael Jackson, thanks to Jaafar Jackson's uncanny portrayal of his late uncle.

Christina Chong, who is also a popular recording artist, previously released new music to coincide with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' second and third seasons. However, as Christina told ScreenRant, she was too busy filming Strange New Worlds seasons 4 and 5 back-to-back in 2025 to hit the studio and cut new tracks.

Perhaps Christina Chong will include a Michael Jackson song cover if she releases new music in tune with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' fifth and final season. In the meantime, Christina understood the assignment and became the life of a "Thriller" zombie party while filming "The Griffin Incident."

Michael Jackson Gives Sony Music a Major Boost

Michael Jackson’s impact on the music industry continues to prove unmatched. While Sony Pictures experienced a relatively quiet quarter at the box office, Sony Music Entertainment enjoyed a significant boost, with the global success of Michael helping drive renewed interest in the King of Pop’s legendary catalog.

According to Sony Group’s first-quarter earnings for the period ending June 30, Sony Music Entertainment posted sales of 557.9 billion yen (approximately $3.5 billion), representing an impressive 22% year-on-year increase. Among the company’s best-selling recorded music projects during the quarter were Michael Jackson’s iconic albums Thriller and Bad, both of which returned to Sony Music’s Top 10 best sellers following the worldwide release of Michael.

The renewed success highlights the remarkable ripple effect that the biopic has had across Michael Jackson’s entire catalog. Fans around the world and many discovering his music for the first time, have been streaming and purchasing his classic albums in huge numbers, proving once again that Michael Jackson’s music transcends generations.

Ironically, while Sony Music celebrated a blockbuster quarter thanks in part to Michael Jackson’s enduring popularity, Sony Pictures Entertainment faced a much quieter period. The studio’s North American theatrical slate was limited, with comedian Nate Bargatze’s The Breadwinner serving as its only major theatrical release during the quarter.

As a result, Sony Pictures’ revenue declined 13% year-on-year to $1.98 billion. However, despite lower revenue, the division still managed to increase operating income by 21%, reaching $156 million.

Theatrical revenue totaled just $30 million, down roughly $100 million compared to the same quarter in 2025, when Sony released major titles including 28 Years Later and Karate Kid: Legends. Television revenue also fell significantly, dropping from $841 million to $571 million, largely due to fewer television series deliveries during the quarter, despite the release of the final season of The Boys.

For Michael Jackson fans, however, the headline is clear: nearly four decades after their original release, Thriller and Bad remain commercial powerhouses. The phenomenal success of Michael has not only captivated cinema audiences but has reignited global demand for Jackson’s music, contributing to one of Sony Music’s strongest quarterly performances in recent years.

The figures once again demonstrate what fans have always known: when Michael Jackson is in the spotlight, the entire music industry feels the impact.

‘MICHAEL’ Says Goodbye to North America… on Top of the World

After an unforgettable 91-day run in North American cinemas, Michael has officially taken its final bow and what a historic journey it has been.

The Michael Jackson biopic, directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jaafar Jackson in his acting debut as his legendary uncle, closed its domestic theatrical run on Thursday with a final $20,000 from 165 theatres. While the final day’s earnings were modest, they marked the end of one of the most extraordinary box office stories in recent years.

The film finishes its North American run with an impressive $372.3 million, making it not only Lionsgate’s highest-grossing film of all time, but also the highest-grossing biopic in cinema history.

Its journey began on 24 April, opening to a phenomenal $97 million domestic debut before dominating the box office for weeks. Even after newer releases arrived, Michael continued to attract audiences, proving that the King of Pop’s story still resonates with moviegoers across generations.

Of course, the biggest headlines came from the records that kept falling.

Michael became the first biographical film ever to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide, overtaking Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer to become the highest-grossing biopic of all time. It also surpassed Bohemian Rhapsody as the biggest musical biopic ever released and recently climbed above The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to become the highest-grossing film of the year worldwide.

Its worldwide total now stands at an incredible $1.012 billion, including $640.2 million from international markets, where audiences embraced the film in spectacular fashion. Countries such as Japan, where Michael Jackson’s popularity has remained immense for decades, played a significant role in the film’s global success.

The achievement is even more remarkable considering the challenges the production faced before reaching cinemas. Delays, script rewrites and endless speculation surrounded the project, while critics remained divided following its release. Yet audiences delivered the verdict that ultimately matters most at the box office.

Director Antoine Fuqua reflected on the film’s billion-dollar milestone by calling it a humbling achievement and praising the dedication of the cast, crew, producers and partners who shared the vision of honouring “one of the greatest artists the world has ever known.”

Jaafar Jackson’s performance was one of the film’s biggest talking points. Making his acting debut while portraying his own uncle brought an emotional authenticity to the production, supported by Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Katherine Jackson.

With the North American chapter now complete, the film will continue playing in a handful of international territories before eventually making its way to home audiences. Meanwhile, Lionsgate has already hinted that conversations about future Michael Jackson projects are underway, suggesting this may not be the last time fans see the King of Pop’s story on the big screen.

For a film that faced years of obstacles before release, Michael has achieved something few thought possible. It didn’t simply become a hit, it rewrote the record books.

More importantly, it reminded the world that Michael Jackson’s music, artistry and cultural impact remain as powerful today as ever.

As the curtain falls on its North American run, one thing is certain: the King of Pop still reigns at the box office.

‘Off the Wall’ Hits 200 Weeks on Billboard 200, Extending Michael Jackson’s Chart Legacy

More than 46 years after it first got people dancing, Off the Wall is still proving that great music never really goes out of style.

Michael Jackson's groundbreaking 1979 album has reached another impressive milestone, landing its 200th week on the Billboard 200 chart. The achievement comes as interest in Jackson's music continues to soar following the massive success of the Michael biopic, with fans both old and new revisiting his legendary catalog.

A milestone decades in the making

According to Forbes, Off the Wall has now spent 200 weeks on the Billboard 200, making it Jackson's fourth album to reach that mark. The achievement comes during one of the strongest commercial runs his music has seen since his death in 2009.

Although Off the Wall slips to No. 178 on this week's Billboard 200, its staying power tells a much bigger story. The album also climbed from No. 12 to No. 10 on the Vinyl Albums chart and rose from No. 20 to No. 15 on Top Album Sales, showing that fans are still buying both vinyl records and physical albums. Jackson currently holds six spots on the Billboard 200, with Thriller and Number Ones both sitting inside the Top 10.

A huge year for Jackson's catalog

The latest achievement is just one part of Jackson's remarkable comeback on the charts in 2026. Since Michael premiered in April, his songs have dominated streaming services and Billboard rankings.

Earlier this month, the deep cut "Chicago" unexpectedly reached the Hot 100 after going viral online, giving Jackson another chart hit in a different decade of his career.

The King of Pop also became the first artist to chart on the Hot 100 in every decade since the 1970s.

    The album that changed everything

Released in August 1979, Off the Wall marked Jackson's first collaboration with legendary producer Quincy Jones after the pair worked together on The Wiz. The album produced four Top 10 hits, including the No. 1 singles "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You." It also made Jackson the first solo artist to earn four Top 10 Hot 100 hits from a single album.

The success of Off the Wall set the stage for an even bigger partnership. Jackson and Jones reunited for Thriller in 1982, creating what remains one of the biggest-selling albums in music history.

More than four decades later, Off the Wall continues to leave its mark. The album has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, earned Diamond certification in the United States, and now adds another historic Billboard milestone to its enduring legacy.
