In September 1987, Michael Jackson was in Japan for the opening leg of his Bad World Tour when he learned about the kidnapping and murder of 5-year-old Yoshiaki Ogiwara from Takasaki, Japan.
The tragedy deeply affected Michael. He sent his condolences to Yoshiaki’s family along with a $20,000 donation.
During the Japanese leg of the tour, Michael spoke about Yoshiaki from the stage and dedicated his Japanese performances to his memory. At the September 26 concert in Yokohama, he said he hoped such a “brutal and heartbreaking thing” would never happen again.
Yoshiaki’s memory was also carried onto the sleeve of Michael’s “Man in the Mirror” single, released in 1988:
“Dedicated to Yoshiaki Hagiwara.
May such a terrible thing never happen again.
I will always love you.”

„Gewidmet Yoshiaki Hagiwara.
Möge so etwas Schreckliches nie wieder geschehen.
Ich werde dich immer lieben.“
