"Thriller live" in Germany auf Tour

  • Sie haben Speechless rausgeworfen! genauso wie Will You Be There!
Das waren die beiden Lieder, die mich damals in London am meisten erfreut haben.
Waren sie denn noch drin, als das Musical letztes Jahr 4mal in Deutschland gastierte?

Eight different performers are gearing up to play Michael Jackson in a West End show charting the pop star's life

The King of Pop's 40-year career has been put into a stage show called Thriller Live, covering hits from the Jackson Five days to his 1991 album Dangerous.

Roger Wright, one of the men playing Jackson, said he is honoured to play the part.

"Obviously he's such a perfectionist and and amazing artist you want to, as a performer, do it justice and obviously there's only one Mike you know," he said.

"From our hearts, on the stage, we just try and do our best and make it sound good "

Ricko Baird, another Jackson performer, once doubled for the man himself in the video You Rock My World and choreographed the video.

"It's big shoes to fill but you just do the best you can and you know I love Michael Jackson and I've worked with him, and as a child growing up you just know Michael Jackson, you know, all the moves and stuff," he said.

"So, yeah, you just got to focus. It's a really focused mind state you have to be in to make sure the performance comes across like he would do it."

Thriller Live opens at London's Lyric theatre on January 21st.

  • Tito Jackson and Other Celebrities Attend "Thriller Live" Premiere

Today, January 21, 2009, Michael Jackson's brother Tito Jackson attended the premiere of the UK hit musical, "Thriller Live!"

According to UK reports, Tito signed autographs and met with the staff of the theater, and said of the show: "I'm very excited. It's a beautiful night."

Other celebrities spotted at the premiere include Jessica Taylor (Dancing On Ice), Nicholas Hoult (actor), Lucy Pinder (model), and Lulu (singer).

Thriller Live "pays tribute to the musical hits and career of Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5" and more details about the show can be learned by reading this previous MJJR.net news post.

Michael Jackson did not attend the premiere, although he did watch a live showing of the 2007 show at Hammersmith Apollo.

Tito was the only member of the Jackson family to attend the show.

Michael Jackson's brother Tito has attended the opening night of a West End show about his family.

Thriller - Live has been billed as a tribute to the hits and career of pop star Jackson and The Jackson 5.

Last year producers held open auditions to find a young actor to play the musical legend on stage.

Tito, who said he was "very excited" about seeing the show, signed autographs outside the Lyric Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue.

    Speculation

During the audition process, producers said they wanted a boy aged between 11 and 15.

He had to be black or mixed race boy with "an excellent unbroken pop/rock voice with a high range".

Singers were required to perform Ben, I Want You Back, or I'll Be There.

The show has already been seen in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia and travelled on three UK tours.

Michael Jackson himself is not involved in the musical, but Sony, which owns his back catalogue, is supporting the show.

There has been speculation that The Jackson 5, who last performed together in 2001, will be reuniting next year with the former King of Pop among them.

However, the 50-year-old star, best known for hits such as Bad and Smooth Criminal, has denied the rumours.

Last month he issued a statement, that said he "no plans to record or tour" with his siblings.

    (Wednesday January 21, 2009 09:51 PM)

A show celebrating the music of Michael Jackson was given his family's seal of approval when his brother, Tito, arrived for its West End premiere.

Jackson signed autographs outside the Lyric Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue, before meeting theatre staff.

"I'm very excited. It's a beautiful night," he said.

There was no sign of Michael Jackson, who is currently in Los Angeles.

Other celebrities at the premiere of Thriller - Live included Dancing On Ice star Jessica Taylor, who wowed viewers and judges on Sunday.

Taylor, wife of England cricketer Kevin Pietersen, would not reveal any details of her next routine except to describe it as "hard".

"There's a lot of competition. There's a lot of people who stand out," she said.

Asked if actor Todd Carty could become the show's John Sergeant and win viewers' hearts despite a lack of aptitude, Taylor said: "The public are extremely powerful and they use their vote.

"If I was watching it I would vote for Todd for how brave he is to do the show with what little training he has had."

Other famous faces at the theatre included actor Nicholas Hoult, glamour model Lucy Pinder and singer Lulu.

Thriller Live is not a Michael Jackson musical - that is, it's not Michael Jackson's musical. Instead, it's a tribute show directed by Adrian Grant, a Jackson fan who began by staging tribute shows, went on to meet the man himself, wrote a book on him, and has now brought Thriller Live to the West End.

Nor is Thriller Live based solely on the title album. Instead, it's a "jukebox show": a line of greatest hits from the Jackson 5 , through the golden days of Off The Wall and Thriller, to the rocky 90s solos.
It starts in Jackson 5 mode, with 13-year old Kieran Alleyne as young Michael, backed by his brothers delivering a Motown nostalgia-fest: I Want You Back, The Love You Save, ABC, all choreographed in the happy style of a Ready Steady Go! episode. It's cute, kicking and retro, but also highlights a danger that looms large in this show: that even as a tot, Jackson was supremely gifted performer - both as a singer and a dancer - and this tribute, however well intended, inevitably pales by comparison.
As if unsure of its own worth, Thriller Live keeps reminding us of Jackson's: record-breaking sales figures flash on a video screen, and singers - sounding oddly like museum guides - break off between numbers to tell about his achievements.
Part one rounds off with a non-stop medley of what seems to be every track from Off The Wall, with a glitterball and white disco suits. Singer Roger Wright has a soaring, modulated Motown voice, but even he can't stop this from sounding like a compilation album by Telstar.
But things look up in the second half. Denise Pearson, formerly of 80s pop outfit 5 Star, ("the British Jackson 5") delivers a sassy rendition of The Way You Make Me Feel and makes it her own. The other numbers in this half are, ironically, strongest when they slavishly copy their model - because the choreography for Beat It, Smooth Criminal, and Thriller actually works on stage, lending some backbone that's lacking in the earlier numbers. Ricko Baird makes a very slick lead dancer, but you can't help but miss the syncopated, fast-and-loose popshots of the Gloved One.

    'Thriller Live'

    div#relatedBox {margin:5px; width:300px;}
A Flying Music presentation in association with Adrian Grant of a musical entertainment in two acts. Directed and choreographed by Gary Lloyd. Original concept and executive director, Grant. Musical supervisor and head arranger, John Maher.

With: Ricko Baird, Ben Foster, John Moabi, Denise Pearson, Roger Wright, Kieran Alleyne, Ashton Russell, Layton Williams, Sterling Williams, Jo Dyce, Earl Perkins, Sean Williams, Yasmin Yazdi, Dannii Rothman, Ross Sands, Kamilah Beckles, Jordan Darrell, Lewis Davies, Christabelle Field, Elliott James, Emily Rumbles.

"Thriller Live" cannot be faulted for lack of admiration of its subject. Over nearly three hours of often expertly executed song and dance, the production provides an exhaustive showcase for Michael Jackson's back catalog. Only a wisp of chronological narrative and its presence in a West End house link this outing to traditional theatrical fare; it's a tribute concert played out with remarkably high production values, including studio-quality live music from a six-piece band. But the tone of adulation and sheer volume of material covered seem likely to overwhelm and eventually alienate all but the most devoted Jackson fans.
One of those, clearly, is the show's mastermind, Adrian Grant, editor of the first-ever Jackson fanzine, producer since 1991 of an annual London-based Jackson stage celebration and personal friend of the King of Pop.
In extensive program notes, Grant raises, in order to dismiss, the inevitable questions about Jackson's plastic surgery, changing skin color and reclusive lifestyle at Neverland Ranch; needless to say, photographs from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Dept. are nowhere to be found in production-related materials. This show is pure musical hagiography, a fanzine come to moonwalking, crotch-grabbing, high-note-scaling life.
To his credit, Grant has assembled an excellent creative team, led by choreographer-director Gary Lloyd, to realize his loving vision, and the overall approach -- Jackson's hits sung by four strong-voiced, charismatic leads, backed by a crackerjack team of singer-dancers -- is effective and entertaining.
This is not immediately apparent, however, in a shaky first half-hour in which projected text hyping Jackson's achievements ("750 million records sold worldwide," etc.) alternates with bell-bottomed and 'fro-wigged renditions of too-numerous Jackson Five tunes. Four boys alternate in subbing for pre-teen Michael; Kieran Alleyne, on the night reviewed, looked cute but lacked musical agility.
In between songs, the lead vocalists take turns reciting cringingly reverential narration about Jackson's development and achievements. The show hits its stride only when attempts at storytelling are dropped and the full company takes the stage to dance and sing exuberantly through some of the Jacksons' best late '70s hits ("Shake Your Body," "Blame It on the Boogie"). As the show cruises through the '80s and hits from the "Off the Wall," "Thriller" and "Bad" albums, it's hard not to be won over by strong renditions of what was, by many estimations, some of the best pop/R&B music ever recorded.
This good faith is rapidly worn down, however, by increasingly idealized representations of the entertainer as we enter the period of his personal and professional decline. Saying that "Michael Jackson continues to inspire us all" is factually unsustainable, and placing his image in a sequence of portraits that includes Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama (in the week of the latter's inauguration) stretches credibility to its breaking point.
Another shaky step in the show's lengthy, hit-laden coda is the introduction of Jackson impersonator Ricko Baird. The production is at its best when celebrating Jackson but starts to feel creepy when it tries to embody him. As with another tortured black man, Othello, "Thriller Live" suffers by loving its subject not wisely but too well. Trimming a good hour off its playing time could have better showcased the estimable talents onstage while celebrating Jackson's undeniable musical achievements much more effectively.

  • WEST END's THRILLER LIVE Extends to 2010 and X Factor Finalist Joins Cast
    Tuesday, April 28, 2009; Posted: 09:04 AM

100,000 extra Thriller - Live tickets are to go on sale on Monday May 4 as the West-End box office smash celebrates becoming the highest grossing weekly show in the history of the Lyric Theatre.

Thriller - Live is extending its acclaimed run due to phenomenal public demand to Sunday January 3 - the first anniversary of its opening in the West End.

Thriller - Live, a spectacular, high-octane concert specially created to celebrate the career of the world's greatest entertainer and undisputed King of Pop, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, opened on Wednesday January 21, 2009 following previews from Friday January 2.

The cast now includes "X-Factor" finalist Maria Lawson. Rejected by Simon Cowell at the "bootcamp" rounds in 2004, Maria was one of the favourites to win in 2005 under mentor Sharon Osbourne. Maria even sang Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" - one of her songs in Thriller - Live - in one of the early rounds. Her mentor claimed that she was a victim of the ‘Irish Mafia', referring to Irish judge Louis Walsh's decision to vote her off in favour of Irish act The Conway Sisters. This caused a media uproar and Walsh threatened to quit the show after days of negative press. Lawson's elimination was also a shock for bookmakers who had her as a 66/1 outsider to leave the programme. She did sign to Sony BMG in 2006 which took her to LA to record her debut album with a song written especially for her by Diane Warren. Her self titled album was released later that year and charted in the top 40 and led to a Top 20 single. Maria was also snapped up as the model for lingerie company Bravissimo. Maria's second album, ‘Emotional Rollercoaster', due out later this year, has been produced by Brian Rawling, who has worked with one of her idols, Tina Turner. Maria has also written a book about her experiences, ‘Life Starts Now'.

The non-stop hits just keep on coming in Thriller - Live from "I Want You Back", "I'll Be There", "Show You The Way To Go", "Can You Feel It", "Rock With You", "She's Out Of My Life", "Thriller", "Beat It", "Ben", "ABC", "Man in the?Mirror", "Dirty Diana", "Billie Jean", "Earth Song", and many, many more. To bring to life on stage the distinctive higth-energy dancing and pulsating sound of many of pop's greatest hits, "Thriller - Live" blends eye-popping video footage and effects together with dazzling choreography by the show's award-winning director Gary Lloyd, who has previously worked with Leona Lewis, Will Young, Gareth Gates, Emma Bunton, Robbie Williams, Pink, Anastacia, Lemar; Rachel Stevens, Kelly Clarkson and Girls Aloud. "Thriller - Live" was originally conceived and created by Executive Director of the show, AdrIan Grant, a long time associate of Michael Jackson, and author of ‘Michael Jackson - The Visual Documentary'.

In a phenomenal, unparallelled career, Michael Jackson has to date sold more than 750 million records, had 13 number one singles - more than any other male artist - and is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice; once as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1997 and later as a solo artist in 2001.

SHURE WIRELESS MICROPHONES “THRILL” MICHAEL JACKSON FANS

NILES, IL, MAY 5, 2009 — When the producers of the “Thriller Live” musical arrived at the Lyric Theatre in London, they found themselves faced with the difficult challenge of isolating a wireless radio frequency within the heart of London’s theatre district. After much deliberation, the company turned to Shure and the Joint Frequency Management Group (JFMG) to provide the solution.

“The issue we have in such a densely populated area is isolating RF channels that are not already in use,” explained Chris Whybrow, the production’s Sound Designer. “We basically needed to make sure we weren’t stepping on anyone’s toes.”

The iconic venue is located in London’s West End, surrounded by numerous theatre, musical, and comedy productions. The crowded nature of the area made isolating RF for on-stage instruments and vocal artists very difficult. Following a full assessment of his requirements, Whybrow selected a range of UHF-R® Wireless Microphone Systems supplied by Shure Distribution UK.

“When we discussed our requirements and the frequency isolation issue with Shure, they were confident they could help,” commented Whybrow. “They have experience working with limited frequency environments and were very helpful in ensuring that the right kit for the job was chosen.”

Whybrow also contacted JFMG regarding frequency usage and to obtain the required license for operation of the equipment.

The installation used several Shure UHF-R systems on the Q5 frequency band, which enabled easy set up of this multi-channel system in a busy RF environment. The performers reproducing the King of Pop’s greatest hits are provided with one of seven UR2/KSM9 microphones, finished in both black and champagne. The KSM9’s dual-diaphragm design perfectly reproduces vocal performances in the live environment and, coupled with the UR2 transmitter, provide a rugged and lightweight solution with improved RF transmission reliability.

“The combination of the Q5 frequency band and Shure’s wireless technology has given us a very strong RF frequency,” said Whybrow. “We don’t get any interference from other microphones or shows.”

Successful RF transmission was achieved through a combination of UR4D dual wireless receivers and UR1 wireless bodypacks. The compact UR1 bodypacks provide transmission from the stage while still allowing a full range of movement by the performers. Transmissions are fed to six UR4D dual wireless receivers, each capable of selecting 2,400 frequencies and storing six 60 channel custom frequency groups.

“We were able to successfully use the Q5 frequency band for the show, and in all we have 16 channels running for the production,” added Whybrow. “We’re also using two UA870WB antennas to enhance wireless reception in the theatre area and two UA845 antenna distributors to amplify the RF signals and properly split them to our six UR4D receivers.”

The Shure wireless systems will remain a permanent installation for the production’s entire extended run in London and will also be used with the European version of the production, which is currently touring the continent.

  • Adrian Grant Talks About Meeting With MJ

(29-5-2009) In an interview to The Norther Echo
Adrian Grant talked about the meeting with Michael Jackson that inspired his show Thriller Live.

Back in 1990, he got to meet Michael on his Neverland Valley Ranch:

"When I first went over to Michael Jackson s Neverland ranch and there weres monkeys running around inside and a tiger, a giraffe, llamas and everything, I was thinking 'this isn t real' . His security guard told me `it is real for Michael Jackson, he s grown up with that, that s his reality'.

When you do spend time with him you realise he s as very down to earth as much as I m talking to you now. He'll joke around and he's very knowledgeable about his music and his craft, but away from all that he's just a normal guy who has had massive success.

His life has been lived under a microscope unfortunately and he s been naive and been let down by people and made mistakes which he'd hold his hand up to."

In the Eighties, Adrian Grant launched the Off The Wall fan magazine selling 200 copies. Subscriptions grew to 25,000 and led to an annual Michael Jackson tribute show from 1991 with the tenth anniversary event attended by Michael personally.

"We had over 3,000 people there and it came into my mind that it would make a stage show in its own right. At that time a one-off event cost us about £30,000 up to £100,000."

In 2006, Adrian gained the investment of the Flying Music production company in 2006 to develop the show. But he admits it was hard handing over his baby to the commercial experts.

"On the creative side I work hand-in-hand with the director (Gary Lloyd) but he provides the choreography and staging."

The only downside of linking your stage production career so closely to Michael Jackson is that Grant finds himself having to defend the entertainer`s reputation.

"The funny thing is that when one of his records, like Billie Jean, plays people aren't talking about the allegations against him. We don t touch on any of the controversy.

People are just dancing and having a good time. We ve had people as young as five and as old as 70 dancing in the aisles."

Michael hasn` t seen this latest version of the show but was sent a taped version. And brother Tito showed up at the Lyric Theatre recently and was complimentary.

"He [Michael] is going to come back bigger and better than ever. I'm looking forward to hearing his new material. He's looking forward to putting this negative period behind him. In my case, it's hard to go wrong with Michael Jackson s music.

When we first started touring he gave me a message of congratulations. Otherwise, there is no direct deal with Michael Jackson.

It's a concept presentation of his music, not a book musical where you'd need planned rights.

With tribute shows, you're free to put on a presentation."

Grant also said that his many meetings with Michael Jackson shows that the reclusive side of the entertainer is more of a media myth.

"At the end of the day he's one of the most open pop stars I've met.

Prince is reclusive, but Michael will open his doors to the public and fans. I once offered him a few dance moves which he laughed at. His advice to me was that you need rhinoceros skin to be in this industry."
