Ich habe eben direkt an "Little Susie" sowie "Scared Of The Moon"gedacht *träum* :)

  • Michael Jackson records pop album of Robert Burns poems

Michael Jackson, the pop star, and friend David Gest have teamed up to record a bizarre pop album of Robert Burns' poems.

    Last Updated: 1:44PM BST 27 Aug 2008

Gest, the former husband of Liza Minnelli, said they recorded the album at Jackson's studio in California with top recording artists, giving a 21st century twist to the Bard's lyrics.

Gest, a concert promoter and television personality, said that Jackson is in love with the poetry of Burns and helped pay for it to be put to music.

Scotland's national bard died in 1796 and his poems were described earlier this month by Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman as "sentimental doggerel".

But Gest, 55, believes his works are as relevant today as ever.

He said: "Our favourite poet in the world is Robbie Burns.

"Michael and I were originally going to do a musical on his life with Gene Kelly directing and Anthony Perkins as executive producer - but they both died.

"So Michael and I put all the poems to contemporary music in his studio in Encino.

"We did Ae Fond Kiss, Tam O'Shanter and all that. We turned his work into show tunes. It is beautiful and I still have the recordings.

"I am thinking more and more about bringing Red, Red Rose back to life because I went on that bridge when I was last in Scotland looking for Tam O'Shanter.

"I felt like I was a little kid looking for all those things Burns wrote about and the curator let me lay on the bed Burns slept in at his family home. The alarm went off. It was really surreal because Michael and I think of him as one of the most brilliant minds ever."

Paxman sparked fury after he dismissed Scotland's national bard Robert Burns as "no more than a king of sentimental doggerel" in the introduction to the new edition of Chambers Dictionary.

Paxman's derogatory description of the poet incensed Burns experts, with one leading scholar describing him as being both wrong and ill-informed.

But Gest, a former I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here contestant, said: "He was great with women and writing great poetry."

Jackson turns 50 on Friday, August 29 and to mark the occasion, an album, King of Pop, has been released this week.

    Dotmusic - 9 minutes ago

Michael Jackson has recorded an album of Robert Burns' poetry with David Gest, according to reports.

The infamous pop star and former husband of Liza Minnelli are said to have put together a modern musical interpretation of the Scottish writers' work.

A spokesman for the "I'm A Celebrity" contestant says there are not thought to be any plans to release the show tunes.

Gest explained how the pair approached the recordings. "We haven't changed the lyrics but the music is now modern and brought up to date.

"Michael and I had fun. It's something we have always wanted to do…because he is our favourite poet."

Oftentimes, I think it would be beneficial for TheCelebrityCafe.com to have pictures, and then I remember that we often write about Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson has recorded a musical set of Robert Burns poems with a number of stars - David Gest being one.

Gest told the Daily Record that Jackson is currently having recording sessions in his personal studio in California.

The audio recordings are a bit of a let down for Jackson, however, because his original plans to make a movie about the Scottish poet fell through.

"Michael and I were originally going to do a musical on his [Burns'] life with Gene Kelly directing and Anthony Perkins as executive producer," Gest said. "but they both died." "So Michael and I put all the poems to contemporary music in his studio in Encino."

The entire interview can be found at the publication's website, but it's a bit disappointing because there's Gest doesn't reveal what types of contemporary music play beneath the readings of Burns' poems.

Maybe it's "I Kissed a Girl." Or "Thong Song." Or "Drop It like It's Hot." There's so many options, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Michael Jackson Records Album Of Robert Burns Poetry Feature Story

  • Robert Burns's poetry might have been dismissed as "sentimental doggerel" by Jeremy Paxman but that hasn't stopped diminutive I'm A Celebrity contestant David Gest and pop legend Michael Jackson from recording an album of the much-loved Scottish poet's work. Gest's spokesman said the album is a modern musical take on some of Burns' classic poems, and had been a long cherished project.

He explained that he and Jackson were originally planning to do a musical about Burns's life, but decided instead to turn his poetry into show tunes. Poems featured on the album include Ae Fond Kiss and Tam O'Shanter, the story of a man from Ayr who stays too long in a pub and witnesses a satanic vision on his trip home. Gest is now keen to tackle Red Red Rose, he said.

"We haven't changed the lyrics but the music is now modern and brought up to date," Gest said. "Michael and I had fun. It's something we have always wanted to do…because he is our favourite poet."

There are no current plans to release the recording as an album.

  • Burns fans mull over Jackson link

Who's bard? Burns poetry fans shocked by Jackson reports.

Burns experts have been shocked by reports of the musical link.

Rabbie Burns experts have reacted with astonishment to reports that Michael Jackson has recorded an album of the poet's work put to a modern backing.

The musician's friend David Gest said they had recorded the Bard's verse at a studio in California.

Southern Scottish Counties Burns Association president David Baird said he was "incredulous" at the reports.

He said he was happy to see the poet's work promoted to a modern audience but not if it made Burns "look silly".

Mr Baird, from Dumfries, said he was surprised when he heard about the project.

"I was quite incredulous at the thought that Michael Jackson on the eve of his 50th birthday was thinking of plagiarising Burns and cashing in on the 250th anniversary next year," he said.

He said he had very mixed feelings about the proposition.

"The idea of turning Burns's tunes and songs, which he carefully collected, into 'show tunes' just kind of grates a wee bit," he said.

"I think it is great that anybody is trying to bring Burns and his philosophy and his poetry to the forefront of people's minds.

"But I think there are ways and means of doing it that don't actually make him look silly."

    Own interpretation

Mr Baird added that while he did not think the poet's work should be preserved "in aspic" he felt any music should be in keeping with his words.

"There is myriad interpretations of Burns and every man has his own interpretation," he said.

"There are some beautiful songs in the settings Burns himself chose and I think it would be sad to move away from some of that.

"I think there is a need to reflect on why it is that he set particular pieces to particular pieces of music."
