  • Jackson Speaks...Finally
    Monday, September 26, 2005
    By Roger Friedman

Jackson Speaks Up: Eight-hour London Deposition

Michael Jackson didn't want to, but he finally had to answer some questions on Friday. He reluctantly answered questions posed to him in a deposition by the attorney for his former business partner, Marc Schaffel. Schaffel has sued Jackson for $4 million, claiming he loaned Jackson money and bought him luxury items with the promise of reimbursement.

I'm told the session at a conference room in London's prestigious Dorchester Hotel lasted eight hours, with Jackson's representative, Thomas Mesereau, frequently objecting to questions asked by attorney Howard King. Nevertheless, Mesereau did not ask Jackson questions himself.

Mesereau, I'm told, was upset by the appearance of another deponent in the Schaffel case, Jackson's former manager, Dieter Wiesner.

The deposition was a unique one in that Jackson, sources say, refused to return to Los Angeles for it. His attorneys petitioned the California judge in the case, saying that the beleaguered pop star didn't want come back to America from Bahrain, where he's been staying since his child molestation trial ended in June. (There was no mention of Jackson having been in New York recently. More on that in a bit.)

The judge OK'd the London deposition but required that Jackson — who is quite cash poor and is depending on the kindness of his royal Bahraini friends — to pay the expenses involved. This meant flying Schaffel, King, Mesereau, Jackson's Houston attorney Michael Sydow, Wiesner, et al plus entourages to London business class and putting them up at hotels. Jackson, I'm told, cobbled together the cash from various sources at the last minute.

The actual questioning was said to be uniquely weird, with Jackson at first claiming not to know simple things like what his business relationships were or what he owned or how he'd gotten it. Schaffel, for example, bought Jackson a Lincoln Navigator and was supposed to be reimbursed. Jackson, in this testimony, seemed initially unaware of it or that he'd ridden in the car back and forth to court last spring.

The hedging, which may surface one day since the deposition was videotaped, was eventually addressed when King produced itemized bills and receipts kept by Schaffel throughout his association with Jackson.

Jackson, meantime, is still facing at least three other court issues: a $48 million lawsuit brought by Darien Dash, the cousin of hip hop entrepreneur Damon Dash; an ongoing custody/visitation fight with the sole biological parent of his two eldest children; and a civil action brought by a New Orleans man who claims to have a repressed memory of Jackson molesting him when he was underage.

Jackson also faces the continual public relations effort of his former p.r. man Bob Jones and co-author Stacy Brown. Their book about Jackson, "The Man Behind the Mask," remains a sticking point for the singer despite his recent acquittal. Jones's revelations and observations about Jackson — he worked for him for over 25 years — cannot be ignored. They are about as accurate a report on Michael Jackson as we will ever get.

To stem the tide of bad press, Jackson recently announced he would record an all-star charity single for hurricane survivors. Unfortunately, his efforts have so far produced little satisfaction. I'm told everyone he's asked, including Stevie Wonder, have politely declined. And as it turns out, Wonder has a new single called "Shelter in the Rain," from which he is donating the profits derived from its downloading (on iTunes, MSN Music, etc) to the American Red Cross beginning tomorrow. If anything, that's the song celebrities should get together and record in a group. It's a winner.

    Rush & Molloy

Jax busts a move – to rap

Cash it in, 50 Cent. Shrivel up, Slim Shady. Michael Jackson may be ready to rap.

Having once anointed himself the King of Pop, the singer now wants to reinvent himself as a booty-chasing hip-hopper, we hear.

The move toward a harder-edged sound is said to be part of a plan to put his child-molestation trial behind him. "Soon you will see him surrounded by all kinds of beautiful women," says "Alien Rock" author Michael Luckman, who's tapped into the Jackson camp.

He's already trying to surround himself with Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige and other bona fide hip-hop stars, whom Jackson's rep says have promised to perform on his hurricane relief single, "From the Bottom of My Heart."

"Despite everything, Michael still commands a great deal of respect from younger artists he influenced," says another source.

Andre Van Pier thinks he has just the outfit for a Vegas show Jackson is said to be hatching.

Van Pier, who created costumes for several Jackson videos, envisions the Gloved One as a "Space Warrior," complete with Roman legion helmet and illuminated white leather jumpsuit.

"I want to transform Michael [into] a man with power on a level that we've never seen before," says Van Pier.

So why can't we stop thinking of Bugs Bunny's little alien antagonist, Marvin?

  • Yeah, I heard about this few days ago from some fans in mjno chat and most of them said they were from London, they heard that M.J. might be there and they wanted to go see him.
Later that night, one mj friend from London told me that Michael checked into the Dorchester hotel as Kenneth Brown and he checked out before she got there with her friends, so nothing happened, they didn't see him.
But, I'm just saying what I heard and I have no idea if it's true or not.
    ...anything is possible...

    Michael Jackson Comes To London

It appears Michael Jackson has chosen the UK as the place to re-launch his career, with the singer planning to record a charity song for victims of Hurricane Katrina in a London studio.

Jackson will be coming to London to recording the song, which will mark his first visit to the UK, and indeed his first professional engagement since being cleared of charges of child abuse earlier this year.

Jackson recently spoke out about the flooding and devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina saying in a statement, “My heart and prayers out to every individual who has had to endure the pain caused by this tragedy.â€

The troubles singer will be performing on the song, entitled ‘From The Bottom Of My Heart’ alongside The Godfather Of Soul, James Brown, reports The Sun.

Also featured on the track will be Jay-Z, Missy Elliott and Mary J Blige.

The paper's source said: "Michael wants to release it within the next fortnight. He can't wait to visit London. He's always had incredible support from fans in England and admires the top producers there."

It’s rumoured that the song will be recorded within the next two weeks.

The King of Pop will leave his current base in Bahrain to begin work on the track, tentatively titled ‘From The Bottom Of My Heart’.

Speaking about the New Orleans tragedy, Jackson said: “My heart and prayers go out to every individual who has had to endure the pain caused by this tragedy.â€

Naja, was heisst für November geplant.

  • Michael Jackson plans UK comeback?
    (Friday September 30, 2005 11:01 AM)

The former king of pop may have had his crown knocked off in recent months but Michael Jackson is rumoured to be planning his comeback in the UK.

The singer reportedly wants to relaunch his pop career in London and record a charity song for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

But Jacko won't be going solo just yet - stars like James Brown, Jay-Z, Missy Elliott and Mary J Blige are set to join him on the track, according to reports.

A source said: "Michael wants to release it within the next fortnight. He can't wait to visit London."

Jackson has been a singing superstar since the age of eleven, when he had four consecutive number ones with The Jackson Five.

His two 1980s albums - Thriller and Bad - topped the album charts but then his eccentric lifestyle threatened to overshadow his musical talent.

His 1994 marriage to Lisa-Marie Presley lasted just two years and his long series of cosmetic surgeries, most of which he denies, became notorious.

This year he was tried on charges of trial molestation and conspiracy. He was acquitted in June.
