MJ The Musical Cast is changing

“MJ The Musical” is due to open its doors in December, but when it does, a new actor will be moonwalking into the role of the King of Pop!

With the pandemic, schedules and jobs have been moving around and the original “Michael”, Ephraim Sykes, is no longer able to make the show.

In a statement he said:

“It’s with a heavy heart that I depart ‘MJ,’ this year has brought a lot of change and opportunity, and although it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to an iconic role and production, I look forward to what is to come. Thank you to the ‘MJ’ team and congratulations to Myles. I can’t wait to see you shine as the King of Pop and for us all to celebrate the return of Broadway.”

Myles Frost will take his place and make his Broadway debut in the production. Myles is known for his role in the TV series “Family Reunion” (2019-2020) and in the movie “All In” (2019).

“MJ: The Michael Jackson Musical” is suffering at the box office.

Advance sales are very poor so far because tourists are restricted from traveling to New York.

Most travelers from European countries, Britain, and many other countries are banned from entering the US right now depending on vaccinations, etc.

The result is all Broadway shows are suffering a lack of advanced sales. “MJ” isn’t alone, but the news isn’t good.

Aside from a couple of well sold Saturday nights in December, the shows are largely empty so far. On Ticketmaster.com, the seat maps are seas of blue dots waiting for purchase.

A website called StacyKnows.com just sent out a message saying they have a chunk of tickets available for December 9th, for $140. The first preview, on December 6th, still has a number of seats for sale.

It’s surprising, too, because Michael Jackson is on target to sell almost a million albums this year, half of which are copies of “Thriller.” His popularity is not an issue.

But the tourism restrictions, the prices, and fear of sitting in theaters is clearly inhibiting audiences from making plans.

Rich + Tone Talauega part of MJ The Musical

“MJ” Director and Choreographer Christoper Wheeldon has introduced brothers Rich and Tone Talauega as part of the musical’s creative team.

The Talauega brothers, who have been working with Wheeldon on the development of “MJ” for the past three years, will focus specifically on the Michael Jackson movement for the production. They were previously dancers on Michael Jackson’s tours and performances and have choreographed multiple Jackson-related projects since, including Cirque Du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour” and “Michael Jackson One.”

“It has been very exciting to have them as a part of my team as their first-hand knowledge both of Michael’s life on tour and movement languages is invaluable and informed the authenticity of our show,” said Wheeldon in a press release.

Performances of “MJ” are scheduled to begin at the Neil Simon Theatre on Dec. 6, with an opening night set for Feb. 1.

Rich and Tone are no strangers to the Fans!

We first saw them with Michael on the HIStory World Tour but also on the short film GHOSTS.

They also play stunts in “You Rock My World” and seen on the TV documentary “Michael Jackson: The One”.

The brothers are also heavily involved with Michael Jackson’s Estate since he passed away.

First in 2011 with Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour and Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE as mentioned and now the MJ Musical.

But they were also involved in the Michael Jackson Halloween Special (2017), the Michael Jackson’s Hologram at the 2014’s Billboard Music Award and choreographed Michael Jackson & Justin Timberlake’s Love Never Felt So Good short film.

This Week-end, Rich and Tone will talk about their involvement with the MJ Musical at the Michael Jackson Birthday Celebration in Las Vegas.

Der offizielle Store des Musicals hat ein neues T-Shirt ins Angebot aufgenommen. Das Motiv stammt von dem mit Michael Jackson befreundete Künstler #NateGiorgio. Das Merch von "MJ: The Musical" ist empfehlenswert - die Bearbeitung einer Bestellung und Lieferung nach Europa funktioniert bestens.

Das Musical „MJ“ suchte bis zum 20. September 2021 in den Vereinigten Staaten nach einem talentierten Jungen, der Michael Jackson zu Beginn seiner Karriere darstellen kann. Die Anforderungen für diese Rolle sind hoch, denn Michael Jackson verfügte schon als Kind über eine verblüffende, außergewöhnliche Gesangsstimme. Gesucht wurde ein Junge im Alter zwischen 9 und 12 Jahren, der den kleinen Michael Jackson möglichst authentisch nachahmen kann. Für die Rolle winkt ein Entgeld von über 2200 Dollar pro Woche. Am 25. Oktober 2021 verkündete die Produktion von "MJ: The Musical", wer denn nun die jüngsten Mitglieder des Casts der neuen #Broadway-Produktion sind. Walter Russell III aus Harlem, New York, und Christian Wilson aus Norfolk, Virginia, werden abwechselnd in die Rolle von dem jungen “Little Michael” schlüpfen. Walter Russell III kommt von der "Harlem School of the Arts". Devin Trey Campbell aus der Bronx, New York, wird den jungen “Little Marlon” Jackson spielen.

Zudem haben offiziell die Proben begonnen - viele Mitwirkende posteten auf Instagram ihre Textbücher. Wie schon angekündigt besteht das Ensemble aus Quentin Earl Darrington als Joseph Jackson und Rob, Whitney Bashor als Rachel, Gabriel Ruiz als Alejandro, Antoine L. Am 6. Dezember 2021 ist es so weit, das offizielle Musical über das Leben von Michael Jackson wird am Broadway in New York zum ersten Male einem Publikum vorgestellt. Gerard Raymond vom Onlineportal #BroadwayDirect traf den Bühnenbilddesigner Derek McLane und Kostümdesigner Paul Tazewell Anfang November in London. Derek McLane: "Die Story spielt in einem Tanzstudio. Michael Jackson probt dort mit seinen Tänzern und den Musikern, mit denen er zur #Dangerous World Tour aufbrechen wird. Das erste was der Zuschauer auf der Bühne sehen wird, ist ein wunderschönes, Licht durchflutetes Tanzstudio mit großen Fenstern. Es geht vom Bühnenbild her wirklich um Transformation, die Art und Weise, wie sich die Tänzer in der Geschichte, die durch Flashbackepisoden lebt, in andere Charaktere verwandeln. Es verwandeln sich die Objekte auf der Bühne in die Orte und Ereignisse in der erzählten Geschichte. Alles im Set ist also veränderbar.

Der Kern der Geschichte ist die Darstellung seines kreativen Prozesses: ein Blick auf seine Kreativität, wie er mit Tänzern arbeitet, wie er die Songs kreiert, wie er eine Tanznummer zusammenstellt. Es geht darum zu zeigen, wie er erschafft. Die Geschichte selbst springt in der Zeit hin und her, eine sehr schnelllebige Geschichte mit fantasievollen Flashbacks. Das Bühnenbild bildet die physischen Transformationen in einer Show nach, die nie aufhört, sich zu bewegen. Es ist zudem ein Tanzstück mit einer unglaublichen Menge an Choreografie und Tanz . Aus den Workshops, die wir gemacht haben, weiß ich, dass Chris Wheeldon die Übergänge sehr fließend choreografiert hat. Und so muss ich alle physischen Dinge, die helfen, die Geschichte zu erzählen, beweglich halten. Das Meiste wird von Schauspielern auf der Bühne bewegt, und so musste ich es ergonomisch genug machen, damit dies mühelos geht."

Der Kostümdesigner Paul Tazewell ergänzte dazu: "Ich suchte Fotos, Familienfotos und Videos zusammen, was er trug, wie es genäht war, welche Stoffe verwendet wurden - was auch immer ich von seinem frühen Leben finden konnte. Für die Produktion des Musicals insgesamt ist es sehr wichtig sicherzustellen, dass wir seine legendären Outfits haben, die sich im Laufe der Jahre etabliert haben. Die theatralische Echtzeit spielt in der Mitte seines Lebens, und dann blenden wir zurück zur Bildung der Jackson Five und zu Interaktionen mit der Familie.

Für einen Kostümbildner ist es schwierig, weil das Publikum verfolgen können muss, in welchem Jahr gerade eine Szene gespielt wird. Die Choreografie lässt nicht viele einfache Kostümwechsel zu. Ich musste sehr kreativ sein, wie wir diese Veränderungen vornehmen, egal ob wir in der Zeit zurückgehen oder eine größere Zahl an Akteuren ausstatten. Ich denke, szenisch, kostümmäßig, lichttechnisch, inszeniert, all das dreht sich darum, ein Erlebnis zu schaffen, das sich magisch, nahtlos und aufregend anfühlt."

Was gab es noch: Myles Frost hat in Los Angeles Tanzworkshops bei Rich und Tone Talauega gehabt. Nun ist er wie das ganze Ensemble und das kreative Team im Neil Simon Theatre in New York zu den Bühnenproben eingetroffen.

Vier Standing Ovations während der Uraufführung sind ein klares Statement. Fünf Aufführungen des vom MJ Estate produzierten Musicals sind bereits ausverkauft. Hier Reaktionen darauf und die Songs, die im Musical gespielt werden: Am Montag fand die erste Vorschau-Aufführung statt. Nach den nun laufenden Probevorführungen kann am Musical weiter gefeilt werden.

Ab dem 1. Februar 2022 finden die regulären Aufführungen im Neil Simon Theater mit seinen 1445 Plätzen statt. Tickets gibt es via mjthemusical.com

Die New York Times schreibt in ihrem Review: „Die Show mit dem Titel „MJ“ zeigt Jackson auf dem Höhepunkt seines Könnens – den King of Pop, mit erstaunlichen Talenten als Sänger und Tänzer – aber sie zeigt auch, dass er in finanziellen Schwierigkeiten steckte (Hypothek auf Neverland), übermäßig abhängig von Schmerzmitteln war (er bekam Demerol verschrieben, nachdem er sich bei den Dreharbeiten zu einem Pepsi-Werbespot verbrannt hatte), beträchtliches emotionales Gepäck aus seiner Erziehung hatte (sein Vater wird gezeigt, wie er ihn schlägt) und von Reportern belagert wurde, die auf alles andere als seine Kunst fixiert waren (erinnern Sie sich an Bubbles, seinen Schimpansen als Haustier?).“

Die Fans sind mehrheitlich vom Musical begeistert, das während zwei Tagen spielt, in denen Michael seine Dangerous Tour probt. Da immer wieder Rückblendungen und Verweise stattfinden, sind auch andere Schlüsselmomente aus Michals Karriere und Privatleben zu sehen, und werden auch später erschienene Songs vom HIStory-Album angespielt.

Darunter der Earth Song und They Don’t Care About Us – die in der entsprechenden Szene veranschaulichen, wie Michael die Aufmerksamkeit auf Missstände lenken möchte, die anwesenden Reporter jedoch nur an Skandalen interessiert sind. Der Song Money komme gemäss einem Bericht im MJJ Community Forum vor, als gezeigt wird, wie Michaels Familie ihn zur Teilnahme an der Victory-Tour drängt.

Die preisgekrönte Lynn Nottage hat die Dialoge des Musicals „MJ“ geschrieben. Sie sagt: „Ich sehe das Kunstwerk, das wir machen, als einen Weg, Michael Jackson tiefer zu verstehen und Gefühle zu verarbeiten. Und das ist es, was Theater letztendlich tun kann.“

MJ The Musical matinee cancelled due to COVID

Today’s matinee show has been cancelled due to positive COVID test results within the staff of the show.

Following statement:

“The matinee performance of MJ the Musical is being cancelled today (Thursday, December 16) due to the detection of a limited number of positive COVID test results within the Broadway company. Performances are currently scheduled to resume tonight, Thursday, December 16 at 8pm. We apologize for the inconvenience this causes ticket holders, but the safety of our audiences, the cast and crew remains our top priority. All tickets for the cancelled performances will be refunded at the original point of purchase.”

Playbill celebrates Black History Month with 4 “MJ The Musical” cover

Broadway’s MJ will make Broadway history as it celebrates its opening night and Black History Month by becoming the first production in Playbill history to offer four unique cover designs to theatregoers. Each audience member will receive one of the four designs throughout the month of February.

Each cover design features an illustration of an iconic Michael Jackson pose by world-renowned illustrator Nate Giorgio, who enjoyed a long friendship and working relationship with the pop icon after contracting to create a series of paintings for Jackson in 1984. Giorgio’s paintings were not only displayed in Jackson’s home, but used in some of his other projects as well, including his book of poetry, Dancing the Dream; calendars; and other merchandise.

“We are thrilled to see this initiative come to life as yet another ‘first’ in our company and brand’s 138-year history,” shares Playbill Vice President Alex Birsh. “Playbill is always proud to continue our longstanding tradition as the premier keepsake of your time at a Broadway show, and we can’t wait to share these special collectors’ items with theatregoers this month. Broadway’s MJ wird Broadway-Geschichte schreiben, wenn es seinen Eröffnungsabend und den Black History Month feiert, indem es die erste Produktion in der Playbill-Geschichte wird, die den Theaterbesuchern vier einzigartige Cover-Designs bietet. It is usual to have a premiere after the previews even though the show has been on since December 2021, MJ The Musical has had its premiere last night.

So all the cast and staff of the show have put their best frock on to walk the red carpet where hundreds of journalists and Broadway goers were waiting in front of the Neil Simon’s theatre on Broadway, New York – decorated head to toe with Nate Giorgio’s drawings of the King of Pop for the occasion.

This included the full cast of the show like Myles Frost who is playing Michael Jackson in the musical but also the controversial writer Lynn Nottage and Director Christopher Wheeldon.

• And of course the Michael Jackson Estate was present with the presence of John Branca. He was shortly joined by all three Michael’s children, Prince, Paris and Bigi. T.J. Jackson from 3T also was in the room. Some of MJ collaborators where also there such as Tone and Rich Talauega, Kenny Ortega and Spike Lee.

The reviews are now coming in and while all of the critics are praising Myles Frost for his performance as Michael Jackson, they also all agreed that it is a crowd pleaser with a just-good-enough nostalgia. While some critics are questioning the quality of the set and also the fact that the very core of Jackson is not touch such as the allegations or his personal feelings, they agreed that it does touch on the King of Pop’s creative mind. They also criticise Nottage to not have gone deeper into the issues as the world after “Leaving Neverland” needs answers. But is it the place to do so? Nottage is not crossing that line of course as this is really the role of the Estate to answer those questions.

And as a premiere, we also got few inside-show pictures showcasing the costumes and set.

Overall, the premiere was a success and it seems that most of the Broadway Critics have enjoyed the show and most of all, the music.
