MJ The Musical: The Original Broadway Cast Recording

Yesterday, several performers from the “MJ The Musical” posted on social media that they were in the studio recording the soundtrack album for the Broadway show – MJ The Musical.

As you know, almost every single Broadway production gets a cast recording album of its original performers singing the songs in the show.

They will be performing the songs of Michael Jackson that are present in the show and we hear that the arrangement for each track is different from Michael’s original versions. Like any studio recording, the cast album is an idealised rendering, more glossily perfect than any live performance could be, and without audible audience reaction. Nevertheless, the listener who has attended the live show expects it to be an accurate souvenir of the experience.

They will be performing the songs of Michael Jackson present in the show. The recorded song lyrics and orchestrations are nonetheless identical (or very similar) to those of the songs as performed in the theatre. Like any studio performance, the recording is an idealized rendering, more glossily perfect than any live performance could be, and without audible audience reaction. Nevertheless, the listener who has attended the live show expects it to be an accurate souvenir of the experience.

However, it came a bit by surprise as the Estate has always refused to release the soundtrack of Cirque Du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE. All Cirque du Soleil shows have a soundtrack album except for one: the Michael Jackson ONE. While some of the songs are a similar arrangement to Michael Jackson Immortal, there are many different incarnations that deserve an official release.

We can hope that this soundtrack will be also released at some point, maybe if the “MJ The Musical” cast recording album does well, we might get lucky. Fans have been asking for it since the show opened in Las Vegas in 2013 and the team at MJVibe directly asked Kevin Atunes the show’s musical director who said “you’ll need to ask John Branca.” So we did, to which he replied “Maybe in the future, but you can get two of the songs in the MJ One Boutique.”

MJ The Musical to go on tour in 2023

MJ The Musical is going on tour across America in 2023 planning to hit 17 major cities over two years starting in 2023. It kicks off in Chicago at the James M. Nederlander Theatre on July 15, 2023.

“We are thrilled by the Broadway response to ‘MJ,’ and that we are already deep in preparations to bring this exhilarating show to Chicago and across the United States,” said co-producer Lia Vollack in a statement. “Chicago is a premier theater and music destination, and we are excited to be able to begin this journey in one of the Nederlander Organization’s most beautiful venues.”

Additional tour engagements and complete cast will be announced at a later date. The tour will also include a previously revealed two-week engagement at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, from Sept. 26-Oct. 8, 2023.

Mittlerweile gibt es für "MJ" nicht nur 10 Tony Award Nominierungen, sondern auch 7 Nominierungen bei den Outer Critics Circle Award sowie den Theater World Award für sein außerordentliches Broadway Debut für Myles Frost (MJ Hauptdarsteller).

Die 10 Nominierungen für die verschiedenen Kategorien des Tony Awards wurden kräftig mit einer MJ-Musical-Party am 12. Mai 2022 in der "Tavern on the Green" gefeiert. John Branca has already expressed his will to get MJ The Musical in different countries and in few interviews, he mentioned he wanted to see the musical in London.

Rumours within the West End’s fans are spreading with a bit more details such as the show could see its opening in the British capital as soon as Spring 2023. There are also rumours that the Estate and production company are already negotiating to secure a theatre which will be home of the show in Europe.

The Musical is already panning to tour in the US in 2023. London is no stranger to have Michael Jackson’s musical as from January 2009 to March 2020, we saw the fan-made production “Thriller Live” in the streets of London.

Tony Awards: «Michael Jackson» siegt vor Hugh Jackman

Ein Newcomer setzt sich beim wichtigsten Musical- und Theaterpreis der USA gleich gegen zwei Hollywood-Größen durch: Der 22-Jährige Myles Frost hat für seine Verkörperung von Pop-Superstar Michael Jackson in «MJ» den Tony Award als bester Hauptdarsteller in einem Musical gewonnen. Mitnominiert waren am Sonntag Hugh Jackman mit dem 50er-Jahre-Klassiker «The Music Man» und Billy Crystal mit der Künstler-Biographie «Mr. Saturday Night». Insgesamt kam «MJ» auf vier Auszeichnungen.

Es erzählt die Geschichte eines schwulen schwarzen Platzanweisers, der von seinem eigenen Musical träumt. Der nicht mit dem Sänger verwandte Autor Michael R. Jackson gewann für «A Strange Loop» auch den Preis für das beste Buch.

Beste weibliche Musical-Hauptdarstellerin wurde Joaquina Kalukango in «Paradise Square» über Iren und Schwarze im New York zu Zeiten des US-Bürgerkriegs. Mit Frost, Jackson und Kalukango zeichneten die Tony-Juroren in diesem Jahr drei schwarze Künstler aus. In der Vergangenheit hatte es an der Verleihung häufig Kritik wegen fehlender Diversität gegeben.

Bestes neues Theaterstück wurde das Finanzkrisen-Werk «The Lehman Trilogy» über den Untergang der Lehman-Bank. Auch Regisseur Sam Mendes wurde für seine Arbeit ausgezeichnet. Er hat bereits in Hollywood Erfolge gefeiert und 2000 den Oscar für «American Beauty» erhalten. Simon Russell Beale aus «The Lehman Trilogy» wurde zum besten Hauptdarsteller erklärt. Beste Hauptdarstellerin wurde Deirdre O'Connell in «Dana H.»

Bestes Musical-Rival wurde «Company», die letzte Produktion von Broadway-Legende Stephen Sondheim - der im November gestorbene Komponist und Texter gilt vielen als größter Musicalautor in der Geschichte. «Company» gewann auch den Preis für die beste Regie und die Auszeichnung für die beste Musical-Nebendarstellerin: Patti LuPone gilt als eine der berühmtesten Broadway-Schauspielerinnen und hat bereits zum dritten Mal einen Tony Award gewonnen. Insgesamt kam das Stück auf fünf Preise.

Bestes wieder aufgelegtes Theaterstück wurde das Drama «Take Me Out» über Homosexuelle im Baseball. Bester Nebendarsteller in einem Theaterstück wurde hieraus Jesse Tyler Ferguson, bekannt aus der Fernsehserie «Modern Family». Beste Theater-Nebendarstellerin wurde Phylicia Rashad in «Skeleton Crew». Sie wurde einst einem weltweiten Publikum als Mutter Clair Huxtable in «Die Bill Cosby Show» bekannt.

Die Tony Awards gelten als wichtigster Preis für Musicals und Theaterstücke in den USA, berücksichtigen aber nur Produktionen, die im zurückliegenden Jahr in einem der 41 Broadway-Häuser im New Yorker Theaterviertel neu aufgeführt wurden.
