I'VE BEEN MICHAEL'S FRIEND SINCE WE WERE TEENAGERS.. HE'D NEVER HURT A CHILD
EXCLUSIVE DAVID GEST - MY STORY

TV star David Gest has always kept the most intimate details of his 35-year friendship with superstar Michael Jackson secret.

But now the Grease Is The Word judge reveals their shared teenage angst and fondness for outrageous disguises.

In the final part of an exclusive series with the Daily Mirror David, who has been inundated with work since he left the Australian jungle, tells how Jackson became unbalanced after a freak accident.

And he reveals how the megastar confided in him that he had a crush on singer Beyonce Knowles.

"I know Michael Jackson better than anyone," says David. "We have loved each other like brothers since we were kids.

"It's time people knew what he is really like - because Michael has the biggest heart of anyone I have ever met. No one can give such an insight on the world's biggest star."

David was 18 when he first met Michael. The Jacksons had just moved into a mansion only a short drive from David's own in Encino, California, and David dropped by offering to show the kids around.

Before long, David and the then 13-year-old Jackson - already world-famous as the lead singer of the Jackson Five - forged a strong bond.

David says: "Even though we had different backgrounds, Michael and I also had so much in common.

"We both had huge afros and were constantly comparing them. Michael used oil to keep his hair in good condition but that caused bad spots on his forehead.

"So at night he wore a pair of underpants around his hair to keep the oil from seeping on to his skin. I almost peed my pants laughing when he stayed at my house.

"Unfortunately, we both had acne. We'd smear whole bottles of Clearasil spot cream on our faces, point at each other and laugh hysterically.

"That's the thing we share most of all - our sense of humour."

Jackson's security team was always dismissed when he and David hung out in Los Angeles.

David says: "He and I loved going to simple diners where people would double-take to see a huge star eating pancakes beside them.

"He told me he could only eat organic food but believed that if he peeled the skin off his Kentucky Fried Chicken it became organic!"

DISNEYLAND was their favourite haunt. To save being mobbed, Michael donned outlandish disguises and roped in David as an accomplice.

"Michael once dressed up as a sheik and I posed as his translator, and we jabbered away in mock-Arabic as we toured the park.

"People stopped and stared, and gasped as I told them my sheikh friend had 154 children. "We would crease up laughing later on but meant nothing nasty by duping people. In fact, Michael often picked up their bill."

David believes that Jackson's personality changed when he became addicted to painkillers after a freak accident in 1984.

While filming his Billie Jean hit for a Pepsi commercial, a fireworks display erupted, showering him in sparks and setting his hair ablaze.

David explains: "Michael was in so much pain after that, he became unbalanced. The trauma, and the pills, changed him. Before then, he had a tight hold of his career.

"The accident didn't make Michael moody or more distant towards me but he did become a different person.

"Now that those child abuse allegations are behind him, Michael is also less trusting and feels wounded.

"But his career vision is back and he's planning a spectacular comeback."

Jackson was first accused of sexual abuse in 1993 by Jordan Chandler, then 13. A few years later, a similar suit was brought by Jason Francia. Both cases were settled out of court. In 2005, 10 molestation charges were levelled by 15-year-old Gavin Arvizo. After a four-month trial, Jackson was found not guilty. The first person he called for support during each case was David.

He says: "When the first allegations against Michael were made, we had a six-hour phone conversation. I told him to fight it.

"I believed he should prove his innocence. But defending yourself can cost a fortune. You could spend everything you have just to say: 'I told you I was telling the truth.' So I understand why he settled.

"I never doubted him. We spoke every day and Michael kept saying: 'I would never do this. You know me. I haven't done anything wrong.' I know he would never, ever harm a child. I always believed him and I hope I helped him stay strong." David insists he has always been a straight-talker with Jackson and his many other showbiz pals.

He counts Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Russell and Beyonce among them. Of the Destiny's Child singer he says: "She is lovely. One of the nicest people I've ever met.

"Her parents brought her up the right way. She blushed when I told her Michael had a crush on her."

But there is one subject David won't discuss with Jackson, the upbringing of the star's three children. "They're Michael's kids and it's up to him how he raises them. It's not my business."

Recently, busy schedules have made it harder for the friends to catch up. But as part of his new fly-on-the-wall documentary, David gives the first TV tour of Michael's parental home with the star's mother, Katherine.

"Mrs Jackson was always lovely to me and treats me like one of her family," says David.

"Whatever Michael or I ever go through, we both know we're here for each other.

"He and his brother Tito are still my best friends and they understand me better than anyone else. I love them both dearly for that."

Grease Is The Word, Saturday, ITV1 at 7.25pm. David's autobiography, Simply The Gest, (Headline) is out tomorrow.

His ITV1 series, This Is David Gest, begins on Sunday, 10.15pm

  • Jackson: Als Scheich durch Disneyland
    19. April 2007 07:37 Uhr

  • hehe* also die Maschinerie löööft ja bestens!
