  • Michael Jackson auctioning contents of Neverland

Posted in MUSIC by Ben on Feb 16, 06:00AM

Michael Jackson is in money trouble. So he's offering crazy bargains, on a set of golden gates, portraits and custom-made crowns. Everything must go.

In April, the lot will go up for auction. Before that, though, a glitzy suite of items will be put on exhibition in London, Dublin ("a private tour, Mr Bono?") and LA.

The auction house openly admits this tour is a marketing exercise, a way to push up interest and prices. Even if the auctioneers say the items are "priced as if you and I had owned them, not as if they were owned by Michael Jackson," the auction and exhitibion, presumably, won't go under some generic banner but be emblazoned with Jackson's name.

In a fascinating article for the Guardian over the weekend, Chris Campion wrote of visiting the warehouse where the auction goods are currently in store:
Before [Neverland] was recently renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch, and at Jackson's request, Darren Julien and his team were brought in to scrutinise the ranch. What they found inside was the most astonishing collection of objects these experienced auctioneers said they had ever seen in a celebrity home. "It seemed as if everything he owned was made of bronze and marble and gold," says Michael Doyle, who catalogued the sale items, as well as determining their value.
Jackson surrounded himself with regal finery. There were suits of armour, display cases of custom-made crowns and an ornately carved throne with red velvet upholstering in his bedroom. "King Michael" even had a royal cape, a Father's Day present inscribed inside with a message from his children "Princess Paris" and "Prince Michael". In the lobby of the house was a commissioned portrait of Jackson as a young man in Elizabethan dress, holding a crown on a velvet pillow. Julien and his team spent almost two months at Neverland last summer, meticulously cataloguing 2,000 items, which will be sorted into 1,500 lots. Cranes and forklifts were brought in to dismantle the fairground rides and move the ornate bronze sculptures scattered across 38 acres of the estate.

In a nondescript warehouse on the outskirts of Los Angeles, the famed gates of the Neverland ranch now sit against a wall. The interior of the warehouse is littered with the ornaments that once decorated the grounds. There are bronze statues of frolicking cherubs, replica marble busts of Roman emperors, a huge statue of Prometheus that used to sit on a skull near the entrance. On shelves there are child-size diesel-powered race cars that used to zoom around the grounds. There is a Pope-mobile-style electric buggy fitted with tinted windows and stereo system. Another buggy has the King of Pop's face painted on its bonnet.

Start setting aside your golden coins and maybe the Jackson-mobile could be yours... Or perhaps you could settle for a fedora from the film clip for 'Billie Jean'?

  • It's the sale of the century: The contents of Neverland are officially up for auction.

Chris Campion enjoys a world exclusive preview
    Chris Campion
The Observer, Sunday 15 February 2009

In April, an extraordinary auction will provide an unprecedented look into the private world of Michael Jackson. More than 2,000 items, ranging from personal effects and costumes to pieces from Jackson's private art collection as well as fittings and furnishings from his Neverland ranch, will be up for sale at a four-day public auction at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.

Given the continuing fascination that the self-styled King of Pop exerts over the public imagination, Darren Julien, the affable Los Angeles-based auctioneer of celebrity merchandise who is directing the sale, expects a media circus to descend on the hotel as well as tribes of devoted Jackson fans from all corners of the globe. Select lots are to be sent on a touring exhibition that will arrive in Dublin and London in March before a full-scale exhibition opens for one week in Beverly Hills prior to the sale.

The idea, Julien says, is to create the kind of spectacle with which Michael Jackson has been so often associated throughout his career. This is the first sale that the superstar has sanctioned of his property. Michael took legal action in 2007 to try, unsuccessfully, to halt an auction held in Las Vegas of Jackson family items that had been acquired by New Jersey businessman Henry Vaccaro.

This new auction seems to mark Jackson's severance from Neverland, his Xanadu and a symbol of his success as well as his largesse. The ranch opened as a private amusement park in 1988, with its own zoo and Ferris wheel, roller coaster and bumper cars. It was named after Peter Pan's fantasy island where children never grow up, and for years children would arrive by the busload, invited to play freely in its grounds. But following the 2005 child molestation trial - which saw Jackson acquitted of all charges - the singer never returned to the 2,800-acre property in the Santa Ynez Valley, 130 miles west of Los Angeles. There were stories of him pitching up in Dubai, Dublin and Las Vegas before he started renting a seven-bedroom mansion in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, earlier this year. The 50-year-old star was said to be defaulting on payments on vast loans, and while he is thought to retain an interest in Neverland through his involvement with a private investment company, Colony Capital, he has said that the police investigation of the premises "violated" it in his eyes.

Before it was recently renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch, and at Jackson's request, Darren Julien and his team were brought in to scrutinise the ranch.

The interior of the warehouse is littered with the ornaments that once decorated the grounds. On shelves there are child-size diesel-powered race cars that used to zoom around the grounds. There is a Pope-mobile-style electric buggy fitted with tinted windows and stereo system. Another buggy has the King of Pop's face painted on its bonnet.

The sale also includes vintage video game machines, as well as Jackson's collection of 18th- and 19th-century art. There are books about Disney, the Three Stooges, Peter Pan and Alfred Hitchcock, as well as a collection of black history books, including the autobiography of Malcolm X. Then there is a selection of his own stage costumes, dating back from the days of the Jackson 5 through to the present. There is one of the fedoras he wore in the video for Billie Jean; a pair of trousers so studded with diamanté that they feel as heavy as chain mail; there are customised military jackets, featuring insignia surely acquired on his global travels - including badges from the Royal Air Force and the Thai Narcotics Bureau.

While the lots are "priced as if you and I had owned them, not as if they were owned by Michael Jackson", according to Martin J Nowlan, the Irish co-owner of Julien's Auctions, this is "certainly not a fire sale" of Jackson's belongings - there is, he says, much more to the singer's hoardings. But it would seem to have a personal significance, perhaps symbolising the point at which Jackson himself feels finally able to divest himself of much that conspired to tarnish his career in order to begin anew.

  • Jackson Gives Blessing on Neverland Auction

Fans of the King of Pop may soon have the opportunity to own a piece of his former estate.

Michael Jackson has given his blessing to Julien's Auctioneers and their attempts to raise money by selling off items in his former residence, the Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara, California.

In November of last year, the cash-strapped singer transferred ownership of the ranch to the Sycamore Valley Ranch Co. - but left many items on the premises.

Julien's will be auctioning nearly two-thousand of those items from April 22 - 25. The estimated total value of all the items on the block is $1.5 million to $3 million.

Jackson is reported to have already gone through the home and kept pieces for himself "that were personal and sentimental."

The singer will get the proceeds from the auction except for a portion to benefit MusiCares, a charity that helps musicians when they are down and out.

Up for grabs are several of Jacksons rhinestone studded gloves and socks. His 1999 Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph limo, and the gates to the Neverland Ranch.

Michael Jackson auctions awards, albums, art, etc.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The King of Pop is lightening his load. At an April auction featuring more than 2,000 personal items, Michael Jackson is set to sell his American Music Award for Thriller, a velvet cape given to him by his children for Father's Day in 1998, a pair of rhinestone-trimmed socks from 1981, a basketball signed by Michael Jordan and his own original artwork.

The 50-year-old singer is also parting with his platinum and gold records, a customized Harley Davidson and a Rolls Royce limousine.

The five-day sale was announced in December by Julien's Auctions, but the full extent of the items available wasn't known until Tuesday, when the auction house released images of the lots. The auction begins April 21.

  • Michael Jackson Auction -- Including White Glove! -- Expected To Take In Millions

    Feb 17 2009 3:44 PM EST
    By Jocelyn Vena

Items up for sale include his famous white glove, gates to Neverland Ranch.

Back in December MTV News reported that Michael Jackson will be auctioning off more than 2,000 items from his Neverland Ranch this spring. During the four-day public auction, everything from his throne (he is the "King" of Pop!) to his Rolls-Royce will hit the auction block.

The auction is set for April 22 - 25 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, with some of the items being shown in London and Dublin before the sale. The items have filled a six-volume book detailing every item up for auction, and the Auction Network is set to broadcast the auction live on both national TV and the Internet.

"Michael Jackson was a collector of everything," Darren Julien, president of Julien's Auctions, told Fox News. "We've never seen a collection that is as extensive and eccentric as his."

The extensive list of items being auctioned off includes a custom-created costume jacket worn by Jackson for his Hollywood Walk of Fame star dedication ceremony, which is expected to fetch $15,000 to $20,000, the auction house shared with MTV News. There's also a pair of acrylic, rhinestoned tube socks (perfect for display under short pants) worn during his 1981 Triumph tour with the Jackson brothers, expected to bring in between $600 and $800. Also, a custom-designed white spandex, right-hand glove completely covered in clear Swarovski crystals is expected to be auctioned off for somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000.

Other items include three suits of armor, fine paintings, costumes, baubles, massive statuary, awards, furniture and even the gates to the ranch. An estimated total value of all the items on the block is $1.5 million to $3 million.

Julien added that despite Jackson's recent financial troubles, he has not been "forced" into this decision. "He has never had an auction. We have been working closely with him for five months and he is in complete control of this. This is something that Michael is doing of his own free will. He is not being forced into it."

  • MICHAEL JACKSON MEMORABILIA FOR SALE: Glittered glove, Neverland gates among items up for auction in April.

    (February 18, 2009)

In April, Michael Jackson is scheduled to auction off more than 2,000 personal belongings from his debt-ridden Neverland Ranch estate at the Julien's Auctions sale in Beverly Hills.

Investors at the Sycamore Valley Ranch Co., a joint venture between Jackson and an affiliate of Colony Capital LLC, agreed to take over the singer's $24.5 million debt on the property after he couldn't keep up the $3 million-per-year operating costs and was forced to sell.

Items on the auction block include a glittering white glove covered in Swarovski crystals that Jackson wore for a stage performance of Billie Jean - estimated to sell for as much as $15,000; and the gates to the 120-acre ranch, which are expected to go for at least $20,000. Jackson's 1999 Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph limo, decorated in 24-karat gold, is expected to fetch another $140,000.

Julien's Auctions president Darren Julien tells the New York Post, "Michael Jackson was a collector of everything. We've never seen a collection that is as extensive and eccentric as his."

Jackson plans to donate a portion of the proceeds from the auction to MusiCares, a charity which aims to help musicians in need.

A preview of the auction items will be held from March 24 to 29 at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York's Times Square. The sale itself will take place from April 22 to 25 and will be broadcast on television.
