LOS ANGELES - Two men pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges of secretly videotaping Michael Jackson more than two years ago as he flew to Santa Barbara with his attorney to surrender in a child-molestation investigation.

Jeffrey Borer and Arvel Jett Reeves admitted they installed two digital videorecorders to record "a professional entertainer" and his lawyer as the pair traveled on a private jet from Las Vegas to Santa Barbara in November 2003, according to their plea agreements.

The entertainer they recorded was Michael Jackson and his attorney at the time was Mark Geragos, although they are not cited by name in the plea agreements. Jackson was later found not guilty of the child molestation charges.

Borer and Reeves each pleaded guilty to one felony count of conspiracy before U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matz, said Thom Mrozek, spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles.

As part of the deal, federal prosecutors agreed to dismiss two other charges - endeavoring to intercept oral communication and witness tampering - in a three-count indictment filed against them in September.

A judge will ultimately decide whether they should each be sentenced to up to five years in prison, three years of probation, and pay a fine of $250,000 at a hearing scheduled for July 12.

Borer was the owner of XtraJet, which operated a Gulfstream jet that carried Jackson. Reeves was the owner of Chino-based Executive Aviation, which provided maintenance service for XtraJet's aircraft fleet.

According to the plea agreement, Reeves purchased video and audio equipment and, with an unindicted suspect, secretly installed the recorders in the airplane's cabin. They were unable to install the remote microphones because Reeves didn't get the proper connectors, so the two recordings were made without sound.

Borer, who instructed Reeves to obtain and install the equipment, intended "to sell these recordings to the media for a large sum of money," the agreement said.

In April 2004, Reeves told a suspect to lie to FBI agents, telling them the equipment was installed in an attempt to catch someone who had been stealing alcohol from the aircraft.

  • Charter Jet Owner Pleads Guilty in Jackson Spy Case
The owner of a charter jet company and his associate pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges of conspiring to secretly videotape pop singer Michael Jackson when he flew from Las Vegas to Santa Barbara in 2003 to surrender on child molestation charges.

The videotapes came to light in November 2003 when Fox News said it had been approached by a private party about selling tapes of Jackson aboard the jet with his then-attorney, Mark Geragos. At the time, the two were en route to Santa Barbara, where Jackson was facing child molestation charges. He was acquitted in that case early last year.

The guilty pleas by Jeffrey Borer and Arvell Jett Reeves brought a sudden end to the government's prosecution of the two men, who previously had denied any knowledge of the illicit taping.

The pair each pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy in a federal district court, said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the US attorney's office in Los Angeles.

Borer was the owner of XtraJet, which flew the plane Jackson and Mr Geragos chartered. Reeves owned a company called Executive Aviation, which provided a maintenance service to XtraJet.

Originally, Borer said he did not know how the secret recordings were made.

But in the plea agreement accepted Monday by U.S. District Judge A. Howard Matz, Borer acknowledged telling Reeves to install audio-video recording equipment on the jet after learning that the entertainer would be chartering it from Las Vegas.

Borer, the plea agreement said, was to be responsible for contacting media companies, negotiating with them and selling the recordings to the highest bidder. Reeves' role was to purchase and install the recording equipment, the plea agreement added.

The court documents said that Reeves and an unindicted and unnamed co-conspirator worked into the early morning hours before the flight's scheduled departure to install the camcorders on the Gulfstream. They were unable to install the microphones because Reeves did not buy the right electronic connectors, but they did make two video recordings of the entertainer, his attorney and others on the jet, according to the plea agreement.

Five months after the incident, court papers said, Reeves' co-conspirator told him he had been contacted by the FBI about the illicit tapes. Reeves concocted a cover story that he had placed the camcorders inside the aircraft to help disprove Borer's allegation that he had stolen alcohol from the jet, the papers said.

Borer had unsuccessfully asked to have his brief court appearance before Matz closed. During the hearing, the two defendants said they understood the consequences of their guilty pleas.

Borer, whom sources have identified as a onetime FBI informant, and Reeves each face up to a maximum of five years in federal prison when they are sentenced in July.

Federal guidelines suggest a sentence of six to 12 months, though the judge will have the final say on whether to impose jail time. Additionally, each faces up to three years of supervised release, fines of $250,000 and potential loss of their FAA licenses.

"The bottom line is that even famous celebrities deserve some level of privacy in their private communications, especially when they are meeting with their attorneys," Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Shallman said after the guilty pleas were entered in court.

"These guys went out and tried to make a bundle of money by attempting to sell these tapes to the tabloids.... It was pure greed."

Prosecutors dismissed two other charges - endeavouring to intercept oral communication and witness tampering.

    One Charged in Ex-Jackson 5 Drummer's Death
A woman told police she stabbed a former drummer for the Jackson 5 with a steak knife when he lunged at her during a fight, prosecutors said.

Yolanda Davis, 44, was being held without bond on a charge of murder Monday in the Lake County Jail and could face 45 years to 65 years in prison if she's convicted.

Davis is charged with killing Johnny Jackson, 54, of Gary, who was found dead late Wednesday in a Gary home.

Gary police Detective Tom Decanter Jr. said in an affidavit that Davis said she grabbed the knife after Jackson choked and struck her. Police found him later with a stab wound to his chest, the affidavit said. Davis was not at the scene when police arrived.
