Michael in London / Pressekonferenz / O2 / ~ DISKUSSIONSTHREAD ~

  • Reports: Michael Jackson seeks comeback in London

LONDON – British media are reporting that Michael Jackson will play his first live concerts for years in London this summer.

Sky News and others say the troubled King of Pop will perform a string of dates at the city's 02 Arena.

Jackson spokeswoman Celena Aponte said Tuesday the reports were speculation. But she said a special announcement about Jackson would be made Thursday at the venue.

Jackson's last live performance in Britain was at the 2006 World Music Awards. He was to perform "We Are the World" but only managed a few lines before leaving the stage.

The O2, formerly the Millennium Dome, is becoming a venue of choice for comeback performers. Britney Spears plays there eight nights in June, and Prince did a 21-day gig in 2007.

Michael Jackson expected to announce comeback in UK

LONDON (Reuters) – U.S. pop star Michael Jackson will be in London this week to make a "special announcement," representatives said Tuesday, and industry sources said it is likely to involve a series of comeback concerts in the city.

Outside Organization, the music PR company which represents Jackson in Britain, has sent an emailed invitation to a press conference at the O2 arena in London, where the concerts are likely to take place probably later this year.

Jackson and representatives from music promoter AEG Live are expected to attend the Thursday event.

The 50-year-old last appeared at the World Music Awards in London in 2006, but the much-hyped return of one of the biggest pop acts of all time was a critical flop after he sang only a few lines of "We Are The World."

The man behind "Thriller," the best-selling album of all time, has generally kept a low profile since his acquittal in 2005 of child sex abuse charges.

He has recently been living in luxury rented accommodation in Los Angeles after spending time in Las Vegas, Ireland and Dubai since the trial.

Rumors and reports of record deals and live comebacks, as well as numerous health problems, have been rife in recent years.

British bookmaker William Hill is already offering odds that Jackson will not turn up for the run of concerts he is expected to perform at the O2 arena.

Jackson's record label Sony did not have any immediate comment.

Greg (smooth-c) is at the Lanesborough Hotel:

Roughly about 10 or so fans outside. Apparently Michael has gone inside, but he has no confirmation of this... Apparently was seen in a cream-ish coloured car. Again, no definite confirmation.

Update @ 6:03pm - hotel security/staff came out of hotel and said to fans Michael had a dinner in the hotel with his kids and will put the kids to bed. Michael will not be coming out today. It's up to you (the fans) if you want to stay out there.

  • Michael Jackson to announce London shows50-year-old singer to reveal details of 02 Arena live dates this Thursday

    Rosie Swash
    guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 3 March 2009 17.03 GMT

Michael Jackson will confirm a string of live dates at London's O2 Arena during a "special announcement" later this week. Details of how many nights the 50-year-old singer will play, along with ticket sale information, will be revealed at 4pm on Thursday 5 March for what will be one of the most hotly-anticipated live events of 2009.

The news follows recent speculation that the singer would join his brothers for a Jackson Five reunion tour, after Jermaine Jackson told reporters "the whole family" would be reforming. Michael Jackson swiftly released a statement that not be participating, saying: "My brothers and sisters have my full love and support, and we've certainly shared many great experiences, but at this time I have no plans to record or tour with them."

The singer has not performed a full concert since he was tried and cleared of child abuse charges in 2005. His last studio album was 2001's Invincible, and no details as to whether the singer is working on new material to accompany his return to the stage have been confirmed.

The move follows the success of Prince's month-long summer residency at the 02 Arena in 2007. The 02, which has also played host to performances from Kylie Minogue and Led Zeppelin, was revealed to be the biggest selling arena in the world in a survey earlier this year.
