  • Spike Lee Film on ABC Spikes Michael Jackson “Bad” Box Into Top 40

    UPDATE
: The Spike Lee film on ABC last night has pushed the “Bad25″ boxed set up to number 37 on amazon.com.

Earlier: The Spike Lee documentary on Michael Jackson, “Bad 25,” aired Thursday night on ABC. For some reason, I could never get anyone to send me a review DVD, so I waited and DVR’d it in real time. “Bad25″ the doc is pretty much a sales vehicle for the “Bad25″ boxed set of four discs–the original album, the outtake demos, a Wembley Arena concert–that is worth buying as one package.
Indeed, last night’s showing sent “Bad25″ the boxed set up to number 189 on Amazon.com, so it was a success. Spike Lee makes excellent documentaries, so it’s no surprise that he’s turned the making of “Bad,” Michael’s followup album to “Thriller,” into a good yarn. He weaves in some amazing clips of Michael performing on the “Bad” tour, and we get to see the real unfettered genius — dancing, singing, composing–that was Michael before the 90s began and his life fell apart in an almost non stop fast forward of catastrophes.
No effort is made to examine what happened after “Bad” and its tour. One thing that happened was Michael’s capricious dismissal of Frank DiLeo, the manager who steered him through the 80s and his great successes. DiLeo was starting to voice disagreement with Jackson about the direction of his life, and Michael–who in Spike Lee’s movie comes off as an enchanted child–showed off his willfulness and fired him. Almost no mention of DiLeo is made in the Spike Lee film, although he gets a nice thank you on the boxed set. If, if, if…If DiLeo had remained, maybe Michael would not have spent money wildly and indulged fantasies that became his undoing. We’ll never know. But after that, no ever said ‘no’ again, and if they did, they were gone.
A lot of other people are noticeably absent from the Lee film, but Spike keeps it on the music. And in that it’s only good. Just the full length clips of Michael, live, performing “Man in the Mirror” (which he didn’t write) and “Another Part of Me,” are worth the whole movie. Also, Spike does reference the various influences Jackson had from Fred Astaire and old black and white movies. Like Madonna, Michael Jackson was proficient in processing what came before him and re-imagining it for a new generation.
Some things are said in this movie and left unexamined, including observations about Michael’s image with women needing change, his insistence on using a high little boy’s voice instead of his own deep register, and his being “too shy” to kiss the hot girl at the end of a video. These things just hang in the air. There were a few other things I found odd, or funny, but they’re irrelevant right now. The main purpose of “Bad25,” besides generating income, is to appreciate Michael Jackson’s art. Judged just for that, Spike Lee did a great job.

Spike Lee Documentary on Michael Jackson: Bad 25 Gives a Fresh Look at an Iconic Artist and Album

It’s difficult to talk about Michael Jackson’s achievements without sounding banal. He’s a legend. An icon. A god to millions. These are undeniable facts, but perhaps more essential to a portrait of this musical paragon is his character, his struggles, and his identity. Spike Lee’s new documentary Bad 25 celebrates these aspects of Jackson's work with telling interviews and never-before-seen footage of the production of Bad — Jackson's seventh album and follow-up to Thriller, the best selling album of all time. It offers a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse of an astoundingly ambitious artistic vision and the creative drive that made it possible.

What is great about this film is its commitment to showing Jackson in the context of his personal relationships with, and his influence on, his friends and fellow musicians. By interviewing a variety of people who worked with Jackson during the ‘Bad Era’ as well as contemporary music luminaries, Lee shows a new perspective on the influence this album had on musicians and the way Jackson inspired those who worked with him to think outside the box —Jackson's forte. While there are many interviews with celebrities like Martin Scorcese, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, and Chris Brown, it’s the lesser-known figures who worked personally with Michael on Bad that really color in Spike’s portrayal of this crucial era in Jackson's career.

The documentary is replete with new footage that showcases Jackson's talent and virtuosity in dance, singing and songwriting — the footage of him proves this as well — and goes further to show how involved Jackson was in the minutiae of his work. He was a perfectionist of the highest order, and he thought out every detail to ensure his vision remained true. I particularly like when they discuss a note Jackson made to himself to get the shoes he wanted for a video in advance, so he could break them in. This attention to detail — not just a complement to but also a function of innate talent — is a hallmark of the level of genius Jackson's work demonstrates. It’s often easy to forget just how hard great minds still need to work to create great art.

This film focuses mainly on the production and influence of Bad and its music videos — a very impressive examination — but ends on a sobering note when it addresses his passing with a montage of reactions by those close to Jackson. The sadness his untimely death evokes in his friends and peers reminds one of the humanity in even the god-like figures, like Jackson. It’s a beautiful yet harrowing way to end a thoughtful exploration of the musical processes of, perhaps, the most iconic and entertainer of all time.

  • BAD25 One Of The Best Music Documentaries Of 2012

(25-12-2012) Paste, a monthly music and entertainment digital magazine published in the United States, published various Top 10 lists for 2012. In the category 'Best Music Dosumentaries' Spike Lee's documentary 'BAD25' reached position #9:

    9. Bad25
    Director: Spike Lee
Airing on ABC on Thanksgiving Day, Spike Lee delved deep into Michael Jackson’s Bad—both the album and the tour—a quarter century after its release. With no more records to break after Thriller, Jackson poured the pressure on himself, pushing himself and everyone around him to take things even bigger. With current interviews with folks like Quincy Jones and Martin Scorsese (who directed the BAD short film) and historical interviews with Jackson, Bad25 captures the moment in pop history. But it’s the candid moments that are most special. While the TV version was just over an hour, you can see the full 123-minute documentary coming to DVD in February, including a clip of Jackson dancing with Sheryl Crow, a section on his purchase of the Beatles’ catalog and interviews with Stevie Wonder and the Biebs.

#1 on the list is 'Shut Up and Play the Hits', a documentary by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern covering LCD Soundsystem’s farewell performance at the Madison Square Garden.
