THE MIJAC CHARITY RECORDING HAS BEGUN: Stars gather at studio in Los Angeles, Jackson participates via satellite.
*Michael Jackson took advantage of the talent gathered for BET’s 25th anniversary special in Los Angeles last week by deciding to schedule a recording session for his all-star charity single at the same time, reports Billboard.
The singer’s publicist, Raymone Bain, said recording began last week on the Jackson-penned single, which was originally titled “From the Bottom of My Heart,†but will be renamed in the coming days. Jackson, himself, is not in Los Angeles and is understood to have participated in the sessions at L.A.’s Conway Studios via satellite and telephone.
Bain says that since early this month, Jackson "was in London tweaking the music as well as putting the finishing touches on it before sending it out to various artists" who he wanted to contribute.
The single, to benefit victims of the recent hurricanes, had originally been set to include over a dozen artists, who were each listed in a press release about the song last month. But Jackson ended up rewriting the song, and as such, "he didn't need as many artists as he originally had planned for" when it came time to record,†Bain said.
So far, sources confirm to Billboard that Ciara, Snoop Dogg and Shirley Caesar made a visit to Conway.
Since a number of the acts were planning on being in Los Angeles this week for BET's 25th anniversary celebration, "he thought it was a good time to do the vocals," Bain says.
"There are others who have to lay vocals as well," Bain added. "[Jackson] plans on getting together with them for the chorus. We still have two to three more steps before the song will be ready for release."
*In other MiJac news, the mother of the boy who accused him of child molestation was back in court on Friday to address her welfare fraud charges. Absent from the proceeding at first, Superior Court Judge David Horwitz demanded that she come to court. After a two-hour delay, she rushed in, dressed in a jogging suit.
She is accused of perjury in falsely applying for welfare aid. Prosecutors allege that she collected $18,782 in fraudulently obtained welfare payments between November 2001 and March 2003, failing to disclose that she had received a $150,000 settlement of a lawsuit against a department store chain.
The 37-year-old woman didn't speak during Friday's proceeding. Her lawyer agreed to a postponement until Dec. 19 for further scheduling.

JACKSON RECRUITS KELLY FOR CHARITY TRACK
LATEST: MICHAEL JACKSON has recruited troubled R+B star R KELLY to perform on his charity single for America's hurricane victims.
It had initially been believed that Kelly, who is currently fighting child pornography charges, would not be able to perform on the single, which had initially been named FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART, until Jackson altered and re-recorded it.
And while the many stars Jackson had mentioned - including MARIAH CAREY, LENNY KRAVITZ and JAY-Z - have yet to publicly confirm that they're participating on the track, Kelly has signed up not only to lend his voice to the project but also to serve as executive producer, reports MTV News.
Jackson, who has kept a low profile since his June (05) acquittal on child molestation charges, had started recording the single in London, but is now finishing it up in Los Angeles.

Joe Jackson Looks for New Stars
Wednesday, November 02, 2005JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Using a senior citizen to hype a rap contest doesn't seem like the smartest marketing ploy, especially when the man in question can't name any rap songs but knows he likes the ones "with the singing in it."
But this senior citizen's name is Jackson, first name Joseph — the authoritarian patriarch of America's most famous musical family. Though the Jackson name has become synonymous with scandal, it still had enough cache last week to lure out a few dozen gawkers, wannabe stars and curiosity seekers to a low-budget lounge for "Joe Jackson's Hip-Hop Boot Camp."
"It's not so much of Joe Jackson knowing about hip-hop, it's about Joe Jackson (search) being able to groom the next generation of superstars," says business associate Charles Kopay, who is hoping to develop the boot camp into a reality show. "Somehow it's touched a nerve."
The way Jackson groomed his own children into superstars is the stuff of legend — and according to his some of his children, of enduring nightmares.
The former musician-turned-steel mill worker from Gary, Ind., had nine children with his wife, Katherine. He drove a young Michael, Tito, Jackie, Jermaine and Marlon through long rehearsals, countless amateur contests, nightclub gigs and concert dates until they landed a deal with Motown and became bubblegum superstar sensations The Jackson 5. He also managed the solo careers of his children, including Michael's and Janet's.
Instead of "Dad," his children called him "Joe," and he developed a reputation as a brooding, intimidating figure who dominated his family. Michael has long talked about beatings he suffered at the hands of his father, and how it scarred him emotionally.
But in person, Joe Jackson's charismatic, genial demeanor belies his image. During an interview at the Boot Camp audition, natty in a dark business suit with a small diamond hoop dangling from his ear, he downplayed talk of physical abuse.
"Katherine whipped Michael more than I did," he says of his wife. "She had to. I was working, I had two jobs. She was there with them all the time — not just Michael, all the children."
Yet he also makes it unapologetically clear that he pushed his children.
"I started them early, when they were young. When they said they didn't want to go I pulled them by the hand and said we're going — we're gonna do this," he says.
By the time Michael morphed from superstar to icon in the 1980s with "Thriller (search)," Joe Jackson was gone from his son's circle of advisers, dropped as his manager (all his children eventually cut their professional ties to him). Soon after that, Michael's image began to change from that of dazzling entertainer to eccentric oddity.
"I started watching them or other people around them, I started getting worried," says Joe.
In 1993, Michael was hit with his first child molestation accusation. LaToya posed for Playboy and accused her family of abuse (which she later recanted), and family dissension spilled into the tabloids. Janet was regarded as the only "normal" one — before her infamous wardrobe malfunction.
Michael's career waned even before he was acquitted of another molestation claim. And last month, Janet denied rumors of a secret child as a nude video of her sunbathing circulated on the Internet.
Still, Joe Jackson, who faithfully attended his son's trial, dismisses the notion that the family name has been tainted.
"That's not true," he huffs. "I don't know how they perceive us. All I know is we put out a record we sell records. We go to entertainment centers to perform, we sell out."
Jackson — who remains his family's biggest booster — has no regrets introducing his family to the business that has brought them plenty of wealth, but also misery.
"I wouldn't wish the family wasn't successful. I never wish that because we worked hard to make that happen," he says. "But what I don't like is when they try and frame the family in some fashion or way or another to make money."
And it hasn't soured him on the prospect of creating new superstars. "We're looking for the best hip-hop artist in the world!" Jackson declared at his Boot Camp, sitting backstage as a Notorious B.I.G. track played in the background.
"Everybody is liking hip-hop now. I'm gonna have to clean it up a little bit — all that vulgar language out there," he said.
"I'm gonna have to keep that clean, with nice singing in it, and great music behind it."
Jackson is managing three different singers and has helped produce two movies, including "Destination: Fame," whose cast includes the singer Mario, former New Kids on the Block (search) star Jordan Night and ... Joe Jackson himself.
"It makes me feel good," he said of his various endeavors, "to do something that I like to do."

R. Kelly Continues 'Trapped in the Closet'

AP Music WriterNovember 3, 2005, 1:37 PM EST
NEW YORK -- By the time R. Kelly is done with his "Trapped in the Closet" saga, it may have more chapters than "Moby Dick."
Parts one through twelve of the dramatic, over-the-top cheating story were released on DVD this week. Kelly says he actually had 22 chapters completed -- "and (it's) still going."
"Other characters are being introduced into the whole situation, and it's just this big whirlwind, a circle of just drama, of things that really do happen on the earth," he told The Associated Press. "It's gonna flip people out because some people are going to see themselves in these chapters, and that's what keeps the excitement going -- I think that's what keeps people going, 'I've got the get the next one!'"It's not Kelly's only project: He's working on Michael Jackson's all-star charity record to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina, which he called "unbelievable." He says his own hurricane relief album will be released in the next few months.
And Kelly also has recorded a song for the "Hurricane Relief Now" project, a double-CD featuring Faith Hill, Norah Jones, B.B. King, Elton John and dozens of others, due to be released Nov. 22.
Kelly said his contribution, "Let Your Light Shine," is his attempt to bring attention to "those that are struggling all over the world, from Africa, to Asia, to Egypt to everywhere ... it's not about just New Orleans."
But he said it stresses overcoming personal woes -- a subject the singer can certainly identify with. Kelly faces trial on three-year-old charges of child pornography stemming from allegations he videotaped sexual acts with a teenage girl. The singer has denied the allegations, and no trial date has been set.
"I'm going through my own struggle, my own hurricane in a way, we all do, and you're either gonna fold or you're going to stand, and I believe in standing," Kelly said. "I believe in overcoming, and if I can do it, I wanna be that light so people can see me and feel they can inspired and say, you know, R. Kelly can get through this, I can get through this, so we can actually go through this together."
