American Rthym ‘N’ Blues star Beyonce Knowles will stage a day-long concert for the Ethiopian millennium to be celebrated on September 12 in Addis Ababa.

Beyonce, who won the Grammy Award in 2001 and 2002, has been invited by Sheraton Addis, a luxury hotel in the Ethiopian capital.

Sheraton Addis will pay Beyonce one million dollars and pay for the transportation of her band and equipment, APA learnt here on Monday.

The 26-year-old singer is expected to be accompanied by other singers from the United States whose identity has not yet been made public.

Sources told APA that Michael Jackson will also attend the Ethiopian millennium as a special guest together with other VIPs.

The Ethiopian millennium has been recognized by the African Union and United Nations as an African and worldwide celebration.

Over 400,000 Ethiopians from the diaspora, tourists and other invited guests are expected to come to Ethiopia for the millennium celebrations.

The Ethiopian calendar is eight years behind that used by most of the world. It is still 1999 in Ethiopia.

Let's wait and see what Raymone has to say.
It is something they celebrate annually, the beggining of the new year, and this time for them the entry to the new millenium! It is one of the poorest countries yes, but they still celebrate this, and it is not the goverment paying the performance, it is Sheraton.

The annual celebration may not be as big as this one. This is to bring in a new era the new millenium. The year 2000.
But I still wouldn't go too overboard wondering what he will or won't be doing there especially since we don't have any confirmation that he will be attending in the first place.
    Pretty cool though.

  • Also ich bin mal gespannt was dabei rauskommt .

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Ethiopian will have available 1.2 million mobile phones for sale to the hundreds of thousands tourists and Ethiopians living abroad coming to celebrate the Ethiopian millennium.

Amare Amsalu, executive director of Ethiopia Telecommunication Corporation (ETC) announced on Wednesday that the mobile phones have been under preparation since the past three months.

“The corporation has prepared these mobile phones to avoid communication problem during the millennium celebrations. We believe that the 1.2 million mobile phones will be enough for the guests and tourists that are coming to the country,” he said.

ETC is preparing to provide various special services including audio and video data to the mobile phone users.

“Those users who can subscribe the special service can watch the premier league on their mobiles. We are currently testing the service in selected areas of Addis Ababa,” Amsalu said.

The mobiles will be on sale beginning mid August in five main cities including Addis Ababa, Nazareth, Shashemen, Awassa and Nekemt.

The Ethiopian millennium, which has been endorsed by both the African Union and United Nations as an African millennium, is due to be marked on 12 September.

Expected guests include African heads of states and world known musicians Beyonce Knowles and Michael Jackson, who is expected to be a guest of honour at the celebration.

Currently there are around 1.3 million mobile phone users in Ethiopia, which started the service seven years ago.

The Chinese telecom company ZTE is currently involving in the telecommunication infrastructure in Ethiopia, mainly mobile telephones.

ETC plans to supply 8 million mobile phones in the coming three years.

    @MW87
