Albums to look out for in 2009
By Damien | January 6, 2009
Okay, so here is a look at some upcoming commercial releases planned for 2009. This year looks like it will continue the upward trend of music sales, after 2008 was the most successful sales year in history to date. ‘09 has some blockbusters!
BLACK EYED PEAS - THE E.N.D.
The B.E.P are set to release The E.N.D around March in 2009.
The album will be a follow up to the mega-successful “Monkey Business”, which has sold 4.2 million copies in the USA and more than 9 million copies worldwide to date! Those are massive numbers by today’s standards!
Since then will.i.am and Fergie have expanded their respective solo fan bases by doing solo projects and featuring on other people’s project. Will.i.am has also been producing some of the biggest hits in the land over the last couple of years!
If their existing fan base from “Monkey Business” are still interested in them, and they can bing their NEW fans from solo projects to the part, expect more BIG numbers from the Peas!! This record has potential to be one of, if not THE biggest selling releases of 2009.
EMINEM - RELAPSE
“Relapse” is set to be release in the Spring of 2009.
Em is teaming back up with long time producer Dr. Dre on this project. Eminem claims this is NOT a comeback. He just wants to remind people of who he is and what he does.
As with any Eminem release it will get attention. He has a committed fan base who will buy his records regardless. His sales are never huge, but are always very decent. Expect this album to make the top 40 global sellers list at the end of 09.
MATCHBOX TWENTY
Word is that Matchbox Twenty have a new album due sometime in 2009.
It will be interesting to see how well a Matchbox album sells. Sales have been fading from release to release, but Rob Thomas has saw some great solo success, so maybe he can bring the spark back to the group.
U2 - NO LINE ON THE HORIZON
“No Line On The Horizon” is due March 3 2009.
This should be one of the biggest selling albums of 2009. Their last album “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb” has reached sales of 9 million worldwide to date. U2 fans are loyal, they have been aroun for decades, and as per usual, they will gain a whole new group of fans with their new release too!
A video has already been shot for what is expected to be the lead single of the album.
MICHAEL JACKSON
The King of Pop Michael Jackson has an album coming out.
The only question is “will it be in 2009?” - the same question fans have been asking since 2006! The answer to that question seems less than certain, but if it DOES come out this year it will be sure to create a MAJOR stir in the music industry.
No album from Michael Jackson of NEW material has ever sold less than 10 million copies, and if this one hits us in ‘09 I would expect Michael to maintain that record. Jackson has a more global fanbase than any other musician, ever! This album would be huge, and assuming Jackson promoted it with videos and performances would bring back a level of entertainment that the world has not seen this decade.
WHITNEY HOUSTON
Will she or won’t she? The Whitney comeback question!
In similar style to Michael Jackson, no one seems really sure about if and when Whitney will make her comeback. But, after a track list for the new album was recently added to the official HMV website, it appears that it wont be too long now!
Additionally, we recently we heard a new Whitney track leak online - a duet with Akon.
PRINCE - LOTUS FLOWER
Coming out soon - January 2009!
Prince albums are always interesting. How will he distribute this one? His last one initially came out for free in UK newspapers! Will he perform another residency style gig, or go on tour? His new website makes reference to dates and ticket sales, so he will be hitting the stage soon, regardless.
Three tracks are currently available on a streaming preview at http://www.lotusflow3r.com/
TIMBALAND - SHOCK VALUE: VOL 2
Timbaland is set to release a second chapter to his 2007 album “Shock Value”.
The abum, “Shock Value: Volume 2″ is set to hit stores mid February. A big long list of collaborations are listed once again.
Can’t see this one doin very well.
Other possible 2009 releases include records by Robbie Williams, 50 Cent, Bruce Springsteen and more!!
