Jacko Back in Cali as Neverland Closes

  • Michael Jackson wird Neverland-Gehälter zahlen

    Donnerstag 16.

State: Jackson to pay workers back wages
    Associated Press
LOS OLIVOS, Calif. - Michael Jackson has agreed to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in back wages owed to employees at his Neverland ranch, averting a potential lawsuit, state officials said Wednesday.
The workers were to be paid Thursday, the Department of Industrial Relations said. Jackson had been given a 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline - later extended to Wednesday - to pay up or face a lawsuit.
The department said at least 30 workers complained they had not been paid since Dec. 19 and were owed $306,000. Jackson also was told he would have to pay about $100,000 in penalties.
However, acting Labor Commissioner Robert Jones said Wednesday that Jackson's payroll records still were being verified and the final calculations for wages and penalties would be available next week.
Jackson's spokeswoman, Raymone K. Bain, said she "never doubted it would be resolved." She said Jackson has not commented because he considers his financial matters private.
A call left with Jackson's accountants - Bernstein, Fox, Whitman, Goldman & Sloan LLP - was not immediately returned.
The Labor Department also said Jackson's representatives indicated they were obtaining workers compensation insurance for 69 ranch employees. The state had ordered all work on the ranch stopped last week because the mandatory coverage had lapsed.
The fine for not having the insurance was estimated at $69,000, but Jones said that figure was not final.

Jackson avoids suit by paying employees

    SCOTT STEEPLETON, NEWS-PRESS SENIOR WRITER

    March 16, 2006 12:00 AM

An extra day apparently was all Michael Jackson needed to come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars in back wages for employees at his Neverland Valley Ranch.

State labor authorities gave the 47-year-old singer until 5 p.m. Wednesday to make good on at least $306,000 in wages dating to last December or face a lawsuit. That's one day past the original deadline set last week by the Department of Industrial Relations.

With about 90 minutes to go before the extension was set to expire, Mr. Jackson's representatives made arrangements to distribute payroll "directly to the employees" starting today, said department spokeswoman Renee Bacchini.

The total amount of wages and penalties is likely to climb, Ms. Bacchini told the News-Press, as authorities continue their investigation.

"We have wage complaints from at least 36 employees," she said. "We will verify everything along the way."

While still facing a minimum $100,000 fine for failing to pay employees, Mr. Jackson appears to have averted a lawsuit for now, thanks to the agreement with the state.

"There is no need to take legal action in this matter at this time as our main concern that all employees receive wages owed to them is being addressed," said Robert Jones, acting state labor commissioner, in a statement Wednesday afternoon. "As directed in a letter on March 7 demanding payment of wages, arrangements have been made to ensure that all employees are paid wages owed them."

Just how much is owed has yet to be determined.

"The total amount in back wages paid will be known when the payroll process is completed and we have verified Jackson's records," said Mr. Jones. "DIR will then calculate the total amount in penalties and act to ensure they are paid."

He said verified back wage and penalty amounts should be available early next week.

Mr. Jackson faces another $69,000 in penalties for failing to have on-the-job or workers' compensation insurance in place for Neverland employees.

Department of Industrial Relations investigators stumbled upon that lapse, which dates to January, while investigating claims of nonpayment.

A week ago, they barred hired help at the 2,600-acre Los Olivos ranch until Mr. Jackson straightened out the payroll matter.

As the days went on, paid security personnel at the front gate's guard shack were replaced by a volunteer family member, and an unnamed veterinarian took on the singer's zoo help as his own employees, ensuring that the needs of the Neverland menagerie were met.

On a subsequent visit to Neverland, DIR investigators verified that no one working at the ranch was a Jackson employee.

His representatives have told the state that they were trying to obtain workers' compensation insurance, but that doesn't let the singer off the hook for not having it in the first place.

"In addition to the wage-related penalties, we will be calculating and collecting the exact amount due the state for Mr. Jackson's failure to have required workers' compensation insurance coverage for his employees," Mr. Jones said.

  • Jackson's Deadline Is Now

    Thursday, March 16, 2006
    By Roger Friedman

    FOX 411

Michael Jackson will pay up all back wages to his 60 or so employees today. Then he'll pay massive fines and fees associated with this mess. His staff will not be allowed to return to Neverland without workmen's compensation, which he is said to be restoring. All of this will be done under the microscope of the California Department of Industrial Relations.

The DIR will not allow Jackson to fall behind on wages again, however. This time it was 12 weeks through today, Last time it was four weeks from November 23-December 23, 2005. And the insurance must be in place, although health insurance—which no longer exists—does not come under their purview. The employees will have to decide if they can live without it. I am shocked no union organizers have to tried to get in to Neverland.

Reports put the Neverland staff at 69, but that may be high. My sources say the number there is really 45. Then there are the employees at Jackson's family home, also on his payroll, plus his assistant Evvy Tavasci, two nephews, a couple of miscellaneous types. They all have to be paid now through today, although some can also be laid off now, too.

What really came out of this is, that despite their loyalty to him, the more than 50 people and at least 60 families were just not important to Michael Jackson. You can sing or talk about feeding children and saving the world, but all integrity is lost when you abandon that many hard working, decent people. For three months during a hard winter those people suffered, and no one in the Jackson family cared—especially Michael. He didn't return to deal with the problem, but sloughed it off on an accountant and his sister. And sources tell me the Janet footed the bill.

Does the world really want more promises of charity from Michael Jackson now? I don't think so.
