NEW YORK — An executive producer for the Black Entertainment TV Awards says Sunday night's live broadcast from Los Angeles will honor Michael Jackson.

Stephen Hill said the show will be dedicated to Jackson because of his influence on music and pop culture. Jackson, 50, died Thursday at UCLA Medical Center after being stricken at his Los Angeles home.

"This will be a show heavy on Michael Jackson's memory. I think what you're going to find is that acceptance speeches for awards will have nothing to do about the artists themselves, but about the influence that Michael Jackson had on them," Hill said Thursday in a phone interview from Los Angeles.

"A show like this takes a good six months to put together, so when something happens three days before, it's going to be done fueled by emotions," he said.

Hill said many of the celebrities who will appear on the show — including Beyonce, Wyclef Jean, Maxwell and Ne-Yo— contacted BET to see how they could help prepare a tribute.

"Within minutes after its happening, we had calls from different artists — all asking what can they do" and how could they pay tribute to Jackson, he said.

The 2009 BET Awards, which honor African-American achievements in music, film and sports, will air from the Shrine Auditorium. Jamie Foxx will be the host of the show.

kanYe West : Blog : THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING MIKE

One of our sources behind the scenes for tomorrow night’s BET Awards has just told us that celebs are scrambling to get some tributes together for the late Michael Jackson.

Here’s what we were told is going down:

Justin Timberlake will be performing at the awards to pay Tribute.

Usher is also rushing back to LA to be part of the show.
Beyonce and Ne-Yo have totally revamped their sets to pay tribute.

The Dream, Chris Brown, Jay Z, will also pay tribute.

An incredible amount of people are trying to get in the show on stage tomorrow night.

Old school Motown players will also show up to represent.

The show will be at least 30 minutes longer.

I am, for once, looking forward to this…

Prince and Michael Jackson were friendly rivals? Seriously? According to former band members of the Purple One, it’s true.

A report in the Startribune, Bobby Z., Prince’s drummer for the Revolution, remembers watching the 1984 Grammys with Prince as Michael Jackson swept the Grammys.

“We were watching rough cuts of [the movie] ‘Purple Rain,’ and we knew that’s where Prince wanted to be the next year,” Z said Thursday.

Michael Jackson even showed up to 2 Purple Rain shows backstage. Although Michael Jackson did want to work with Prince a few years later, Prince declined due to lyrical differences.

Michael Bland insisted they got along fine. “They’d shoot hoops at Paisley Park,” Prince’s studio/home in Chanhassen. “We used to get packages from MJJ Productions [with] footage of Sly Stone performing in Europe. Prince would pop it in the VCR, and we’d watch it.”

Prince even defended Michael at a press conference in 2000 where he said something along the lines of “we don’t really know what is going on with him and maybe we need to chill on that.” (I can’t find the original transcript so paraphrasing people.)

Personally speaking, I did see Michael Jackson attend one of Prince’s shows at 3121 Las Vegas in 2006 with Wil I Am of the Black Eyed Peas and Chris Tucker. Michael did not make the after show as planned where he was to be seated with Michael Jordan.

Recently, Prince has been performing Michael Jackson songs in his sets, “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” and recently “Dancing Machine” by the Jackson 5

It’s nice to know my favorite artist Prince had an interesting connection with Michael that many of us did not know, beating him in hoops I am sure. -Dr.FB

Michael Jackson To Be Honored At BET Awards

June 28, 2009 10:03 AM ET

After three days to process the shock and grief, attendees at the BET Awards — a show thrown into "total overhaul" by the death of Michael Jackson — were preparing for what was sure to be a spectacular celebration of the King of Pop, put on by an dazzling collection of the artists he influenced most.

Already an affair of major star wattage, Sunday night's show was thrown under a white-hot spotlight in the wake of Jackson's death, adding attendees and guests, doubling the number of media requests and even lengthening the red carpet to accommodate all who want to take part.

It was not immediately clear whether any members of the Jackson family, who had been gathering at their Encino compound over the weekend, planned to attend or take part.

Producers of the annual awards show — which recognizes the best in music, acting and sports — say they scrapped their plans and revamped the show to meet the moment.

"It's a total overhaul," network chairman and chief executive Debra L. Lee said. "Luckily we have enough time to do that."

Previously announced performers, such as Beyonce and Ne-Yo, who worked on their performances for weeks, hoped to change them to honor Jackson, producer Stephen Hill said. Other artists who hadn't planned to attend the ceremony, including Usher and Justin Timberlake, tried to catch last-minute flights to Los Angeles to participate, Hill said.

Lee said the network would still present awards, but the show would be "more geared toward Michael Jackson."

Beyonce and T.I. were top contenders for trophies, with a leading five nominations each. She was up for best R&B female, best actress and video of the year. He was in the running for best male hip-hop, best collaboration and video of the year. Lil Wayne, T-Pain and Keri Hilson were tied with four nominations each.

Hosted by Jamie Foxx at the Shrine Auditorium, the BET Awards telecast was extended by 30 minutes to accommodate various Jackson tributes

Janet, Brothers May Do Michael Jackson Tribute Tour

June 28, 2009

Roger Friedman, The Hollywood Reporter

On the table for consideration is a Janet Jackson/Jackson Brothers tribute tour to celebrate the life of Michael Jackson, according to sources.

The proposal is either that the Jacksons fulfill some of Michael's London shows, or do a U.S. tour where they would perform his hits and theirs with him. Janet would be the star of such a show, substituting for Michael since none of the brothers would be remotely capable of being
the lead performer.

Stay tuned, as this is among many ideas to honor (exploit?) Michael takes shape.

And the word is that at least some or all of the Jacksons may turn up on tomorrow night’s BET Awards live from Los Angeles, hosted by Jamie Foxx. The appearance could be step one in showing family unity.

Our BET sources tell us that New Edition may be coming together to perform a tribute to Michael Jackson tonight at the BET Awards. That’ll be interesting. We also hear Damian Hall from Guy is involved in a MJ tribute as well.

I hear Usher walked off Larry King’s show last night. He’s in town to tribute Michael Jackson at tonight’s awards, and stopped by the show to discuss his idol. But after the conversation turned to negativity and focusing on Michael’s addictions and issues, Usher said:

Zitat

“I realize this is your platform, but a family has lost a son, a brother, a father and they are still mourning the loss, all the other stuff will eventually come out but I can’t believe we are sitting here talking about addiction at this point!”

He shook Larry’s hand and left on a good note. Glad he did.
