  • Michael Jackson bids goodbye to staffers, hello to Europe
Last Updated Tue, 27 Jun 2006

Pop star Michael Jackson is moving to Europe and revamping his staff and finances as part of his bid to reignite his music career.

Though acquitted of child molestation charges in 2005, Michael Jackson has been dogged by other problems. (Associated Press) Jackson spokesperson Raymone Bain announced in a statement Tuesday that the singer has enacted "the first of a sweeping restructuring of his personal and business affairs," including breaking with his longtime business managers, hiring a New York company to look after his finances and naming Bain as his general manager.

Additional changes will be announced later, she said.

"He is very serious about his music," Bain told the Associated Press. "When you are a creative person and the creative juices are flowing again and you're about to embark on new projects, you want to make sure your organization is running smoothly."

The singer, who has been living in Bahrain since being acquitted of child molestation charges in June 2005, also plans to re-locate to an as-yet-unnamed European country for his main residence.

"He's just decided that with all of the projects he's going to be involved with and all of the people he's beginning to work with in the music industry, it's easier," Bain said of the upcoming move in an interview with Reuters.

"He'll be going back and forth to Bahrain but Europe will be his principal residence."

Jackson, 47, announced earlier this year that he was working on a new album, tentatively scheduled for release in 2007. His last studio effort was 2001's Invincible.

The performer, who rose to fame with his brothers in the 1970s as the Jackson 5 singing group and topped the charts as a solo artist in the 1980s, has largely withdrawn from the spotlight since his 2005 acquittal.

However, other problems have followed him, including having to shutter his sprawling Neverland Ranch in California because of labour violations, what appeared to be a down-to-the-wire restructuring of his massive debt and a current lawsuit brought by a former business partner claiming he is owed money.

  • Michael Jackson Fires Managers, Moving From Bahrain To Europe
Pop Singer Lived In Bahrain For Past Year

Michael Jackson, who has been living in Bahrain since he was acquitted of child molestation charges a year ago, is moving to Europe, has fired his business managers and has hired a New York-based firm to oversee his business affairs, his spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The announcement from Raymone K. Bain said that she has been named general manager of the new Michael Jackson Company which will replace Jackson's MJJ Productions.

She said that Jackson also is planning public appearances and will begin performing again. "He is reviewing numerous offers to tour musically, which he plans to embark upon within the next several months," the announcement said.

"Mr. Jackson has previously announced plans to record an album which he predicts will be released in 2007," it said.

Bain's press release said that Jackson has severed ties with his Bahraini lawyers and his longtime accountants and business managers, Bernstein, Fox, Whitman, Goldman & Sloan. She said he has hired L. Londell McMillan and The McMillan firm, "known for business restructurings and turnarounds."

In a deposition during a lawsuit about to go to trial in Santa Monica, Jackson was asked about his longtime business manager, Alan Whitman, and said that he thought he had never met him.

The revamping, which Bain's release called "the first of a sweeping restructuring of his personal and business affairs," is an apparent attempt by Jackson to salvage his financial affairs.

Bain did not immediately return phone calls from The Associated Press seeking elaboration on her written announcement.

Jackson is currently in Ireland "on personal business" and is making plans to relocate to Europe, the press release said.

"He is continuing to build his management team and other appointments will be forthcoming," said the announcement.

Jackson had been rumored to be on the verge of bankruptcy for some time. But in April his Bahraini lawyers announced that he had restructured his finances in a deal with Sony Corp. which shares ownership of his valuable music catalog that includes the Beatles' hits.

Details of the deal were never confirmed by Jackson but published reports said he had negotiated a $325 million debt refinancing plan that would deprive him of part of his share of the Sony ATV music catalog which is said to be worth $1 billion.

Jackson acquired the catalog in 1985 for $47.5 million but sold half of it to Sony when he confronted other financial problems.

Jackson recently had to shutter his elaborate Neverland ranch in Santa Ynez because of unpaid salaries and insurance fees.

Washington's Raymone Bain has emerged as Michael Jackson's new general manager. The singer has severed ties with his business manager and accountants, is moving to Europe and expects to release an album of new material next year, Bain said yesterday.

And the woman to help orchestrate all this is Bain, best known for repping Marion Barry even when he was in jail. "I will have oversight authority" of the new Michael Jackson Co., said Bain yesterday. "I report directly to him, and I am his personal liaison between him and his business entities. I'll be the glue to hold things together for him."

Bain, who would not divulge her age, served as the former mayor's spokeswoman for many years and represented Boyz II Men , Serena Williams and Mike Tyson ; Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds remains a client. She has been Jackson's rep since February 2004 -- during his trial on child molestation charges and the year-long overseas retreat that followed. "Michael's going to Bahrain was not running away -- he needed a break," said Bain. "He was able to rest and relax and determine what it was he wanted to do and how he wanted to do it. . . . My job is just to make his job easier."

First up: house hunting in Europe. He's downsized Neverland, but plans to keep the property in California and another in Bahrain. He recently made a public appearance in Japan.

Jackson, 47, has also hired the New York-based McMillan Firm, which specializes in business turnarounds, to oversee legal matters. He's currently facing three lawsuits: two contract disputes and a child custody battle with ex-wife Debbie Rowe . Still to be named: new music and business managers.

Bain declined to say how much she is getting paid for the new gig. "He's a great person and a brilliant musician and performer. I think the more he gets out and people can interact with him, they will be able to determine for themselves who he really is."

Michael Jackson moving to Europe to resume career

    By Dan Whitcomb

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Jackson, who earlier this year shuttered his Neverland Valley Ranch in California, will move to Europe to reignite a musical career stalled by his sex abuse trial, a spokeswoman for the pop star said on Tuesday.

Jackson, who has been living in Bahrain since his acquittal on child molestation charges in June of 2005, has also severed ties with his longtime business managers as part of a "sweeping restructuring" of his affairs, spokeswoman Raymone Bain said.

"He's just decided that with all of the projects he's going to be involved with and all of the people he's beginning to work with in the music industry, it's easier (to live in Europe)," Bain said. "He'll be going back and forth to Bahrain but Europe will be his principal residence."

Jackson had not yet settled on a specific European location, Bain said.

He had named her his "general manager" and hired New York-based attorney L. Londell McMillan to oversee his business and legal affairs, she said.

The 47-year-old entertainer, who has made few public appearances since the end of his sensational trial, had previously announced plans to release an album in 2007 and was considering a tour.

His last studio album was 2001's "Invincible" although he has released several hit collections since then.

Bain said Jackson had no plans to sell Neverland, a 2,800-acre (1,130-hectare) ranch in the California foothills where he was accused of molesting a young cancer patient.

State authorities ordered Jackson to close Neverland earlier this year and fined him more than $100,000 for failing to pay the staff there or maintain proper insurance. Bain said the self-styled King of Pop now maintains the sprawling estate with a small staff.

"He still owns Neverland and he's still providing the funding for its upkeep," she said. "I'm sure at some point in time he will move back to Neverland, that's not out of the question. It's not in the immediate future but it's not far-fetched."

Bain said Jackson has been visiting Ireland and France, where he took his children to the Disneyland resort in Paris, and "having a number of meetings charting out his musical future and his career."

Prosecutors asserted during Jackson's sex abuse trial that the former child star, who ruled the pop charts in the 1980s with such albums as "Thriller" and "Bad," had fallen on hard times and was in precarious financial shape due to mounting debts.

In April, Jackson reached a deal to refinance more than $200 million in loans secured by his prized stake in the Beatles' song catalog.

  • Michael Jackson fires business management team

Updated Wed. Jun. 28 2006 6:28 AM ET

    Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Michael Jackson has fired his business managers, has hired a New York firm to oversee his financial affairs and is moving to Europe, his spokeswoman said Tuesday.

His spokeswoman, Raymone K. Bain, said in a statement that she has been named general manager of the new Michael Jackson Co., which will replace Jackson's MJJ Productions.

The pop star has been living in Bahrain since he was acquitted of child molestation charges a year ago.

Jackson has severed ties with his Bahraini lawyers and his longtime accountants and business managers, Bernstein, Fox, Whitman, Goldman & Sloan. Bain said he has hired L. Londell McMillan and The McMillan firm, "known for business restructurings and turnarounds."

Other management changes are expected and will be announced later, Bain said.

Jackson had been rumored to be on the verge of bankruptcy for some time. But in April his Bahraini lawyers announced that he had restructured his finances in a deal with Sony Corp. The company shares ownership of his valuable music catalog, which includes the Beatles' hits.

Jackson recently had to shutter his elaborate Neverland ranch in Santa Ynez because of unpaid salaries and insurance fees.

The change in management, which Bain called "the first of a sweeping restructuring of his personal and business affairs," is an apparent attempt by Jackson to salvage his finances.

Jackson was in Ireland on Tuesday "on personal business," Bain said in her statement.

The singer will maintain a house in Bahrain, Bain told The Associated Press in a phone interview. He decided to move to Europe for access to music industry figures, she said.

"He is very serious about his music," she said. "When you are a creative person and the creative juices are flowing again and you're about to embark on new projects, you want to make sure your organization is running smoothly."

Jackson is planning appearances and performances in the next several months, Bain said. He expects to release an album next year, she said.

Jackson's chaotic financial dealings will be put in the spotlight in a Santa Monica courtroom this week in a lawsuit over whether he owes $3.8 million to a former business associate.

    F. Marc Schaffel claims he is owed for unrepaid loans and expenses and salary.

Schaffel's attorney, Howard King, portrayed the 47-year-old singer as an incurable spendthrift who sought financial guidance from advisers, then ignored it.

Jackson claims Schaffel defrauded him and hid facts of his shady past.

The McMillan firm has been involved in handling the affairs of other music artists including Stevie Wonder, Prince and Jay-Z, Bain said.

A woman who answered the phone at The McMillan Firm referred inquiries back to Bain. His longtime business manager, Alan Whitman, did not immediately return a phone call.

Jackson Hunts for New Home in Paris

    Wednesday, June 28, 2006
    By Roger Friedman

    Jacko: Next Stop, Paris

Michael Jackson is moving from Bahrain to “Europe,” as his press release and publicity advised yesterday. But I am told that Jackson is likely going to settle in Paris if he can find the money to buy a suitable home. He’s already nixed moves to London and to Germany, two places where he at least has constituencies. Paris is the likely choice for Jackson.

“He wants to be in a place where people can meet with him easily,” says a source. “Bahrain was not that place.” Jackson was recently photographed in Paris, being pushed through the Tuileries in a wheelchair, wearing pajamas and sunglasses, shaded by an umbrella.

Yesterday was a big day in Jacko World. He fired his Bahraini lawyers, Los Angeles accountant Alan Whitman, recently hired manager Guy Holmes, and severed ties with the people who’ve generously paid his way for the last year. He’s said to be in Ireland right now, and I am told that Jackson is likely meeting with Dublin rock promoter and manager Louie Walsh, who counts among his clients U2, Madonna and the Rolling Stones. If Jackson is planning to go to work, Walsh is probably the one manager in the world who would love the challenge of putting him back on top.

Of course, the one monkey wrench in this plan is a piece of paper clutched by Jackson’s former European promoter, Marcel Avram, who thinks he has the rights to Jackson’s next world tour.

The architects of Jackson’s latest management shuffle appear to be PR aide, Raymone Bain, and his children’s nanny, Grace Rwaramba. About a week ago this column received a phone call that this pair had supplanted all of Jackson’s current advisers. Now it has been confirmed. Bain, you may recall, was unceremoniously fired by Jackson last year on the eve of his acquittal on charges of child molestation and conspiracy. She was rehired later in the summer, and now she’s worked her way up to the top of the ladder in the Jacko hierarchy.

Rwaramba started out handling insurance claims at Jackson’s office in 1991, and is now the surrogate mother to his three children. This column revealed last week for the first time that Rwaramba, who is said to have dated Jackson’s brothers Jermaine and Randy, has been married since 1995 although she does not live with her husband.

Bain, I am told, was instrumental in this coup. She is credited with bringing Londell McMillan —the man who manages and counts as clients Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Chaka Khan — to be Jackson’s new attorney. A rising star in the music biz and generally respected, McMillan is the first legit adviser Jackson has had in years. But McMillan also comes into Jackson’s life as his personal soap opera continues: today, for example, a jury is being selected in Santa Monica for a court case brought by Marc Schaffel, Jackson’s former partner, for $4 million. The Schaffel case is just the beginning. Jackson is being sued for $48 million by Darien Dash, cousin of hip hop entrepreneur Damon Dash.

When I caught McMillan for a few minutes yesterday on the phone from Los Angeles, he said, “I think it would be a good practice for Michael to stop being a defendant all the time.” McMillan, it should be noted, is credited for turning around the career of Prince after his whole Warner Bros.-slave episode including the changing of his name to a symbol.

For Jackson, there are also outstanding matters at Neverland, which, contrary to reports, is neither open nor functional. After Jackson paid government fines totaling $100,000 and restitution to former employees of $49,000, the ranch was closed. Jackson has never secured the proper insurance to run it. Since then, most of the animals have been removed from the zoo. A private security force watches for intruders, but otherwise Neverland is shut down. There is also a $25 million lien against it held by Fortress Investments, created so Jackson could buy out his former attorney, John Branca, from a fie percent interest in Sony/ATV Music Publishing.

Choosing McMillan was a sound idea, however, for many reasons. With his close ties to the record business, the New York-based attorney could secure Jackson a deal with his close friend, "LA" Reid of Island/Def Jam Records. Reid has talked to Jackson in the last year about distributing his 2 Seas label in partnership with Prince Abdullah. The talks had come to no result, however. McMillan also represents or has relationships with a number of contemporary artists with whom Jackson could collaborate including Kanye West and John Legend.

Is it a coincidence that Jackson’s change of mind, venue, and staff comes exactly one year after arriving in the island emirate? Probably not. At this point, Prince Abdullah must be a little tired of writing checks and seeing nothing coming back. Also cancelled in this latest house-sweeping is a deal Jackson and the prince made with Guy Holmes of Gut Records in London. Holmes had been selected to run 2 Seas, but at this point no seems to know if the fledging record label will continue without Jackson’s involvement.

Yesterday’s announcement, meanwhile, says that Jackson will continue to have “ties” to Bahrain. But one insider says of the 2 Seas deal, “Michael’s ties are cut now.” Jackson’s biggest relocation problem is that he feels, perhaps rightly, that he can’t return to the United States, California in particular, because he fears harassment or arrest on a variety of potential charges including allegedly faking police brutality. For the moment, he remains a man without a country, quite literally, and perhaps one without the cash for a new down payment either.

Storybook? Da Michael ja nun nicht mehr bei Epic ist, dürfte da doch nun auch eine neue rechtliche Situation entstanden sein...
