The show will be heavily focused on dancing -- honoring the legendary moves of MJ. It will also feature Jackson's songs and have the trademark Cirque du Soleil acrobatics.
In 2012, a second show -- in partnership with MGM MIRAGE -- will open in Las Vegas which will be far more theatrical with emphasis on technology and 3D. "It will be a theme-park-like show," says Branca.
Sources say the shows will be worth a fortune to the estate. Cirque and the estate will split costs and profits 50-50.

  • Cirque du Soleil to create Michael Jackson show

By Alex Dobuzinskis Alex Dobuzinskis – 5 mins ago

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Cirque du Soleil will develop a series of shows based on the music and songs of Michael Jackson, representatives for the late singer's estate said on Tuesday.

The projects include touring and permanent shows and a nightclub to open in Las Vegas.

The first project from the partnership will be an arena touring show expected to open in late fall 2011.

"Having attended Cirque du Soleil performances with Michael, I know he was a huge fan," John Branca, a co-executor of the estate, said in a statement.

"We are excited to be partners with Cirque du Soleil to give Michael's fans a truly unique way to hear, see and feel Michael's music," Branca said.

The "Thriller" singer's estate and Canadian circus company Cirque du Soleil will each own half of each project arising from the partnership. They will split development and production costs, representatives for the estate said.

The singer's mother, Katherine, said in a statement, "Our family is thrilled that Cirque du Soleil will pay tribute to my son in such an important way."

Jackson died on June 25 at age 50 in Los Angeles. Authorities have said he suffered an overdose of powerful medications and his personal doctor, Conrad Murray, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

The Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil currently has a show in Las Vegas based on singer Elvis Presley, called "Viva Elvis."

  • Michael Jackson estate, Cirque du Soleil team for 2011 arena tour, 2012 Las Vegas show

    April 20, 2010

Michael Jackson’s estate and Cirque du Soleil will team up for a concert-like production that will tour sports arenas starting in the fall of 2011 to be followed late in 2012 with a permanent show in Las Vegas akin to existing Cirque productions built around the music of the Beatles and Elvis Presley.

“Having attended Cirque du Soleil performances with Michael, I know he was a huge fan,” John Branca, co-executor of Jackson’s estate, said in a statement issued Tuesday. “This will not just be a tribute to Michael’s musical genius, but a live entertainment experience that uses the most advanced technology to push every creative boundary as Michael always did.”

The location of the permanent show has not been announced, nor whether it will go into an existing hotel or a new facility, but Jackson and Cirque will team with MGM Mirage for that production.

“As a creative challenge, this project is the ultimate,” Cirque founder Guy LaLiberte said in the same statement. “Through the use of cutting-edge technology, we will produce a Cirque du Soleil experience not only worthy of Michael but unlike any other we have created before.”

Jackson’s estate and Cirque will split the costs and profits of their collaborative ventures 50/50, while intellectual property royalties will go to the estate.

“Our family is thrilled that Cirque du Soleil will pay tribute to my son in such an important way,” Katherine Jackson said in the statement.

Cirque’s Beatles show, “Love,” opened in 2006 at the Mirage and has been widely acclaimed as one of the troupe’s most inventive productions, while “Viva Elvis,” at the Aria Resort, has received decidedly mixed reviews from critics and fans.

Expanded coverage of the Jackson-Cirque collaboration will appear later today online and in Wednesday’s Calendar section.

John McClain, Co-Executor for The Estate of Michael Jackson, commented, “There will never be a multi-faceted entrepreneur, humanitarian and innovator like Michael and it is only befitting that this partnership be with Cirque du Soleil. No artist electrified the stage more than Michael did. We expect that his fans will come away from these Cirque du Soleil performances feeling the exhilaration of a Michael Jackson experience and with an even greater appreciation of his legacy.”

Daniel Lamarre, President and CEO of Cirque du Soleil added “We are honored and thrilled to be in partnership with the ultimate and most important record selling artist of all time. This association between two international entertainment brands promises to deliver to fans of both Michael and Cirque du Soleil unique artistic experiences”

Bill Hornbuckle, Chief Marketing Officer of MGM MIRAGE said “Las Vegas is known worldwide for its unparalleled entertainment offerings, many of which have been developed by the creative geniuses at Cirque du Soleil. We have been honored to call Cirque our partner for many years and are humbled now by the opportunity to work with them to create a show that will commemorate one of the most legendary forces in entertainment in our lifetime.”

Katherine Jackson, mother of Michael Jackson commented. “Our family is thrilled that Cirque du Soleil will pay tribute to my son in such an important way.”

The Estate of Michael Jackson and Cirque du Soleil will each own 50 percent of each Michael Jackson project, sharing equally in the cost of creating, developing, building and producing the projects and in the profits from each project. The Estate of Michael Jackson will also receive royalty payments on various aspects of its intellectual property used in the Michael Jackson projects.

  • Michael Jackson Reality Show Might Help Find Cirque Du Soleil Choreographer

'There is a huge appetite for people that want to participate in this Michael Jackson tribute,' Cirque CEO Daniel Lamarre says.

BEVERLY HILLS, California — By now, you may have heard that Cirque du Soleil has unveiled an ambitious plan to bring Michael Jackson back for a series of high-profile stage shows in Las Vegas and beyond. But what you might not know is that these plans will also take the King of Pop off the stage and into everything from nightclubs to restaurants to ... a reality show?

"There's not a lack of creativity around the table," grinned Cirque President and CEO Daniel Lamarre when we sat down with him on Tuesday (April 20). "Between [Michael Jackson estate co-executors] John McClain and John Branca and all the creative team at Cirque du Soleil, we're already bouncing a lot of new ideas around.

"This joint venture is not only for those two shows, but for all of the other initiatives that we can develop together," he added. "We are already working on the concept of nightclubs, restaurants and other experiences and other types of content that we can develop on the brand of Michael Jackson."

One of the leading concepts is a reality TV show that Lamarre hopes to launch by the end of this year. He describes it as a chance to combine television's two hottest shows, "American Idol" and "Dancing With the Stars," with the distinctive style of the King of Pop.

"John McClain came to us with the idea," he said of the yet-untitled program, which would have a national audience assisting as they built the Cirque stage shows. "We would pick the best choreographer that there is in the world to work on [our stage] show, but also use them in a reality show in order to find a new, cutting-edge choreographer that could join the team."

The reality show would also audition dancers for the MJ shows, with a certain number of the top contestants landing a Cirque gig. "That could be an exciting moment," Lamarre said of the show. "Right now there is a huge appetite for people that want to participate in this Michael Jackson tribute."

The Michael Jackson estate and Cirque du Soleil are spearheading the Michael Jackson projects with MGM Mirage, the gaming company that owns such Vegas hotels as Excalibur, Luxor, MGM Grand, Monte Carlo and more. Lamarre said that one of the MGM Mirage hotels will host the Las Vegas Michael Jackson/ Cirque show, and the venture's press release mentions that "special lifestyle projects including a nightclub" will be developed.

"We are exploring all of those opportunities right now," Lamarre offered. "We're at the early stages of those ideas. But we want to make sure that all the fans around the world that want to celebrate Michael Jackson have an opportunity to do it through the experiences we will bring to them."

But if those Michael Jackson-themed restaurants become a reality, Lamarre did make us one key promise: They won't include moonwalking waiters attempting to balance food trays.

"I don't think anybody can do it the way Michael Jackson was doing it," he laughed.

Cirque du Soleil führt Michael-Jackson-Show auf

(sda)

(FIRSTNEWS berichtete

  • Wow super! Ich bin in knapp 1 Monat in Amerika. Leider in Seatlle.
