  • Dubai is Michael Jackson: Choreographer Jamie King
    Bonnie September 3, 2013 News

    By Bindu Suresh Rai

    Published Tuesday, September 03, 2013

Back in 1994, nearly a decade before the likes of Madonna and Justin Bieber discovered the UAE, there was a certain Mr Michael Jackson who announced to his fans that Dubai was to be his city of choice to extend his ‘Dangerous’ world tour.

    .
Unfortunately, it was the concert of the season that never really took flight when Jackson left devastated fans and organisers, The Talent Brokers, in the lurch, cancelling the gig without a single official explanation for his eccentric behaviour; albeit the rumour mill has often coughed up the name of the late Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor as being a defining point in his life at the time.

While it’s water under the bridge now, Jackson’s turn in the spotlight here will remain an unrealised dream for UAE fans after the ‘King of Pop’s’ untimely demise in June 2009, mere weeks before ‘This Is It’ was scheduled to hit the road.

“We can never have Michael back, but what we bring to you is the next best thing,” came the passionate response from renowned celebrity choreographer and one of the four dancers on Jackson ‘Dangerous’ tour, Jamie King.

As the creative director behind ‘Michael Jackson – The Immortal World Tour by Cirque Du Soleil’, King said the world renowned sold-out show is a tribute to the legend, the icon that once mesmerised the world with his music.

    ‘Michael was a maverick’

The Cirque Du Soleil visual spectacle, which will be hosted in the emirate during the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Shopping Festival, will be staged from December 30 to January 14, which organisers describe as ‘directing a legacy that is a fitted tribute to the legend’.

Talking about the show and his former friend, King proclaimed: “Dubai is Michael Jackson; he believed in the illogical and when I look around at the manmade islands here and the world’s tallest buildings around me, this city is exactly what describes the legend, with a larger than life personality.

“I know Michael would have wanted this here.”

Speaking to Emirates24|7 about his own equation with the legend, King, who has worked with the likes of Madonna and Jennifer Lopez over the decades, he said: “Michael was a teacher to me; as a tribute to the global superstar, I wanted to leave behind something that nurtured his legacy and highlighted his role of a humanitarian.”

He continued: “Michael was a maverick; Cirque Du Soleil is a maverick. It made sense when the producers approached me, to combine the two on a single stage to pay this tribute.”
What resulted is a visual extravaganza that has toured over 111 cities since 2011, performing to sell out shows of a combined audience of over three million.

The showmanship of Cirque, complete with artists, musicians and gravity-defying acrobats, is married to 35 of Jackson’s biggest hits, to create a rock style theatrical production that has become the second highest grossing tour in North America.

Brought to Dubai by Duvent, a subsidiary of Meraas Leisure and Entertainment, Cirque Du Soleil’s Senior Director, Public Relations, Renee-Claude Menard explained: “We have nearly 60 performers on stage, running through over 1,200 costumes – 96 of which have embedded LED lights ¬– that requires three trucks to just travel with.”

She continued: “What you see with the Immortal tour is the biggest stage production that Cirque has ever put forth; nothing compares.”

    No Michael impersonators

King is firm that the show will not have ‘tacky’ Michael impersonators, nor will it narrate some biographical account of the legend.

“My main concern when I conceptualised the show was, what I can put on stage which will not prompt Michael’s fans to kill me,” laughed King. “I think the hardest and the most challenging thing to do was start by simply selecting his music.”

King continued: “We have created some new mashups that are exclusive to the show, but have retained some of the iconic visualisations that include that infamous ‘Thriller’ video, complete with zombies, et all.

“The crescendo is the Neverland Ranch, Michael’s home, that is recreated on stage.”

    http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/5…ard-cover-story

CONCEIVED THROUGH AN equal revenue-sharing partnership between the Jackson estate and Cirque du Soleil, "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour" recently became the No. 9 top-grossing tour of all time, earning $325.1 million from 407 shows that drew 2,985,324 concert-goers, according to Billboard Boxscore. Tickets prices ranged between $50 and $250.

"Immortal" also ranked fourth among Billboard's top 25 highest-grossing tours of 2012 and took home the Creative Content Award at the Billboard Touring Awards that same year. Although official rankings haven't yet been released, "Immortal" will rank among the highest-grossing tours of 2013 as well.

On the Boxscore chart, "Immortal" edges out the Rolling Stones' 1994-95 Voodoo Lounge tour (ranked No. 10, with $320 million in grosses) and trails Bruce Springsteen's 2012-13 Wrecking Ball tour (No. 8, $347 million). U2, the Stones and Roger Waters are the top three highest-grossing touring acts, respectively. Jackson is the only deceased artist among the top 10.

The Jackson estate's deal with Cirque also includes a permanent Las Vegas theater production, "Michael Jackson One," that debuted in May at a refurbished, 1,800-seat theater at Mandalay Bay, the former home of "The Lion King" and "Mamma Mia!" Since opening, "One" has been selling at about 93% occupancy from an average of 10 shows per week, according to Cirque.

"The 'One' and 'Immortal' shows represent a true Michael experience, the next best thing to seeing him live," says Branca, who now serves as co-executor of the Jackson estate with John McClain. "'Immortal' is akin to a rock concert experience with a live band in an arena, and 'One' is more of a theatrical show."

With a total development cost of about $145 million, "Immortal" and "One" are two separate and distinct productions built around Jackson's music. Both shows were written and directed by Jamie King, a dancer on Jackson's Dangerous world tour in the early '90s. The productions also feature several other musicians, choreographers and costume designers Jackson worked with during his career.

Despite the onstage absence of Jackson himself, King says the songs, images, spoken-word interludes and other visuals chosen for "Immortal" and "One" reflect the very best of the pop legend's life and musical career.

"I had the heavy responsibility of bringing Michael's spirit onto the stage, reflecting his creative sensibilities and projecting his unbelievable talent for his fans," says King, who has also directed arena tours by Madonna, Britney Spears and Rihanna. "Michael was never, ever missing during the development, rehearsals and launch of these two shows."

"Immortal" debuted at Montreal's Bell Centre in October 2011 and performed its 407th show at New Zealand's Vector Arena on Nov. 3. The trek will relaunch in December with a lengthy run in Dubai before returning to various-sized North American arenas in March 2014 (see story, right). Cirque is also in talks with international promoters about bringing "Immortal" to select overseas territories. So far, it has already visited 25 countries on four continents.

Lamarre believes the tour will continue to climb the Boxscore chart. "I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of the tour, whenever the end of the tour is, we ranked among the top five touring shows in the history of rock'n'roll," he says.

  • Die Immortal-Tour war 2013 die 2. erfolgreichste Tour hinter Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi beats Michael Jackson, Pink, Bruce Springsteen for 2013's biggest tour

    December 16, 2013 4:15PM

THIRTY years after they formed Bon Jovi have scored the most successful world tour of 2013.

Their Because We Can tour grossed $229 million over 102 dates that started in February.

The figures don't even count the Australian stadium leg - tomorrow's show in Brisbane is the last date of the band's entire world tour.

The tour survived the sudden departure of guitarist Richie Sambora in March and sold over 2.2 million tickets globally.

"This is crazy business doing stadiums 30 years on," Jon Bon Jovi said in Melbourne. "I think that generation tells the next generation you gotta see this band live. That's the blessing. It's more than guys that grew up in the '80s."

And death hasn't impeded Michael Jackson's ability to sell concert tickets.

The MJ-themed Cirque Du Soleil show Immortal was the second biggest concert tour of the year.

Launched in 2011, the show features performers inspired by Jackson's music, and a live band playing his hits.

It made $175 million this year, including 26 shows in Australia where the best tickets were priced at $450.

    Australia's biggest tour - Pink's The Truth About Love - was 2013's third-biggest seller.

It grossed $165 million, however like Bon Jovi, US dates in November and December have yet to be factored into the overall figures.

Pink's 46 shows in Australia generated $72 million, with her record-breaking 18 shows at Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena generated over $29 million alone.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's 2013 tour, which was the year's fourth most popular, was also boosted by a sell-out Australian leg in March.

Springsteen's tour generated $164 million, just behind Pink.

Another Australian visitor, Rihanna, was the year's fifth biggest tour, with ticket sales generating $154 million.

The Top 10 featured The Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Depeche Mode and country star Kenny Chesney.

  • Jackson’s forever ‘Immortal’ in touring Cirque show

In 2009, just a few short months after the death of Michael Jackson, the movie “This Is It” was released. Countless fans flocked to the theater to catch the two-hour drama, which chronicled the preparation for the tour that never was.

One of the King of Pop’s biggest fans still can’t bear to watch the movie in its entirety.

“It kills me to watch it,” explains musician Don Boyette, who toured with Jackson on his “Bad” and “Dangerous” tours. “To this day, it just quite literally breaks my heart.”

Currently serving as band leader and bass player in the live production of “Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour,” Boyette says that his pain has subsided a bit in recent years, thanks to the public’s continued craving for the music of his friend and former boss.

“There is not a night up on that stage when I don’t get chills or feel his spirit right there with us,” says Boyette. “This show has allowed me to still experience his essence. I mean, he would have loved this show. I can recall him talking about doing something with Cirque. Michael always wanted his music to be about giving and love. He was all about making the smallest thing into the biggest of events. It’s just so sad that he had to pass away in order for all of this to happen.”

In partnership with the estate of Michael Jackson, along with Cirque du Soleil, “Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour” currently ranks as one of the top 10 grossing music tours of all time, being performed across the globe since its premiere in Montreal in October of 2011.

“The show combines music and dance and the band and of course, Michael’s voice,” explains Boyette, who performs in the Immortal Tour alongside Jackson touring band alums Jon Myron Clark on guitar, Bashiri Johnson on percussion and drummer Jonathan “Sugarfoot” Moffett, who has served as a vital part of the Jackson legacy since the late ’70s.

“There are many times that I look into the audience just to be able to watch their reaction to the show. They are hearing and feeling the presence and the legacy of one of the best entertainers of all time,” Boyette says.

The show also features 49 international dancers, musicians and acrobats, including Hubbard Street Dance and River North Dance Company alum Tina Cannon. “The years I spent in Chicago was where I grew the foundation of my professional career and learned my own versatility,” recalls Cannon, who remembers staying up with her family till midnight just to watch the premiere of the “Thriller” video on MTV. “I’m now getting to use that versatility with Cirque — the way that they now not only utilize dancers such as myself, but give us the opportunity to work with acrobats and contortionists and grow in so many different ways…it’s just been such a wonderful opportunity.”

As the five-year anniversary of Jackson’s death just passed, both Boyette and Cannon says it’s hard to believe the singer has been gone for so long. However, the chance to participate in this production gives them the assurance that the gloved one’s legacy willendure.

“Michael has touched generation after generation after generation, even after his death… I mean, who has done that?” says Boyette. “It’s pretty extraordinary to watch.”
