Eminem, Jackson Tribute Join BET Awards Lineup
Prince, John Legend slated to receive special honors at June 27th show

    By Daniel Kreps

Eminem, Alicia Keys. Usher, T-Pain and a tribute to Michael Jackson have all been added to the slate for this year's stocked BET Awards, airing live from Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium on June 27th. T.I. will make his first major award show performance since his incarceration and Kanye West will return to an awards show stage after his 2009 VMAs controversy at the event, plus Drake, Ludacris, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Diddy – Dirty Money and many more are booked for the big show. Queen Latifah will host. As Rolling Stone previously reported, Drake and Jay-Z lead this year's field with the most nominations.

With Eminem joining Drake and Kanye West on the BET Awards bill, the lineup is just a Lil Wayne shy of a potential performance of their joint hit "Forever." Eminem, Drake and Weezy performed the track, sans Kanye, at this year's Grammys, and unless Weezy phones in his verse live from Rikers, it's unlikely a repeat performance will happen. However, given the powerhouse lineup, the door is open for any number of collaborations: Drake and Alicia Keys' "Fireworks," or Ludacris and Nikki Minaj on "My Chick Bad." Insiders tell RS there's one big performance viewers can definitely expect to see: T-Pain, Ludacris, Rick Ross and a special guest all teaming with DJ Khaled on "All I Do is Win."

This year's BET Awards will also feature a pair of special presentations: Prince will be in the house to receive a much-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Jackson family will be on hand to remember the King of Pop just two days after the first anniversary of Michael's death. Jackson's This Is It was also nominated in the Best Movie category. The BET Awards and the Jackson family previously paid tribute to Jackson at last year's ceremony, which was held just three days after Michael died on June 25th, 2009. John Legend will also be the recipient of the 2010 Humanitarian Award.

  • Michael Jackson to be tributed again at the ‘2010 BET Awards’…

We are literally days away from the first anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death, and now the 2010 BET Awards have plans to honour him again for a second time.

With the BET Awards airing two days after, I guess it only feels right to do something to honour the King of Pop’s memory. Last years tribute was trash though. I understand that Michael died three days before the show went out, and putting them into chaos, hence the little time they had to prepare but they never had to turn it into ‘The Jamie Foxx show’. Lame! As for this second tribute, they’ve had one ENTIRE year to put forward a stunning tribute. And if Chris Brown is not featured in this tribute, then FORGET it!

  • BET Awards honor Prince and remember Michael Jackson

The 2009 BET Awards fell shortly after the death of Michael Jackson. The King of Pop was honored with a special tribute just days after he passed away. As the 2010 awards show is set to air on Sunday night, another tribute is planned to mark the one-year anniversary of the artist's death.

"This is the biggest show we've ever done," said Stephen Hill, BET's president of music programming and specials. "We're going to recognize it's been a year since he passed. All tributes have been missing one thing, and we are providing the one thing every other tribute has been missing."
Hill declined to share more specific details.

In addition to the Michael Jackson tribute, the BET Awards will be presenting Prince with his own special recognition. Viewers can expect a musical tribute as Prince is honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. "That Prince is going to allow us to celebrate him, we're humbled," Hill said.

  • Chris Brown in Jackson tribute

It was a night of comebacks at the BET Awards, and none more unexpected than Chris Brown performing an emotional tribute to Michael Jackson.

The embattled pop star has mostly kept a low profile since pleading guilty to assault for beating up Rihanna in February 2009.

But there he was, centre stage, mimicking Jackson's signature dance moves with almost eerie accuracy. Introduced by Jermaine Jackson, Brown embodied the King of Pop, wearing his fedora and spangled glove and moonwalking across the stage to Billie Jean.

  • BET Awards 2010: Chris Brown Looks at the ‘Man in the Mirror’

The BET Awards are over, and the performer who has set off the most post-show buzz is Chris Brown.

The singer and dancer pled guilty last year to assaulting his ex-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, and was sentenced to five years of probation and 180 days community labor. Since then he has been struggling to mount a comeback as his album sales have slackened.

On last night’s awards show, he tried to rehab his image and remind fans why they may have liked him in the first place. After being introduced by Jermaine Jackson, Brown paid tribute to Michael Jackson by dancing along to some of his hits, like “Billie Jean,” and copying some of his signature moves. When it came to the close of the routine, and Brown was supposed to dance and sing along to the Jackson song “Man in the Mirror,” he seemed to become overcome with emotion, and sobbed his way through the number.

“Man in the Mirror” is a track off of Jackson’s 1987 solo album, “Bad.” It was written by Siedah Garrett and Glen Ballard. The lyrics to “Man in the Mirror” include the lines “I’ve been a victim of a selfish kind of love…I’m starting with the Man In The Mirror/ I’m asking him to change his ways.”

Brown’s performance instantly set off a debate online. Was he faking his tears? And what was he getting so emotional about? Rihanna? His career setbacks? Jackson’s death? Something else?

Later on the BET broadcast, when Brown came up to accept the AOL Fandemonium prize, an award that honors his fans’ online devotion, he said “I let you down before but I won’t do it again, I promise.”

  • Chris Brown finally gets his Michael Jackson tribute at BET Awards 2010

As far as I’m concerned, there’s only been one Michael Jackson tribute. Tonight (June 27) Chris Brown finally got his shot at paying homage to his fallen idol, Michael Jackson, at the BET Awards 2010. Jackson’s brother Jermaine introduced Brown, who popped up on stage in a blue shirt, black slacks, white socks, and Jackson’s trademark black loafers. It was a spot-on pull from Jackson’s look at 1988′s Grammy Awards.

He started of performing Jackson’s Bad smash “The Way You Make Me Feel” and then changed into a sequined black jacket and donned a glittered white glove for Thriller‘s “Billie Jean.” Brown’s obviously the only singer capable of doing Jackson’s moves justice. He popped, spun, and moonwalked as the “King of Pop” did for decades.

The performance’s most touching moment came when Brown started to sing Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.” Within a few lines he got too choked up to finish the track, bursting into tears. Because last year’s BET Awards happened just days after Jackson died, they were not able to put together a proper tribute to the legend. At this time last year Brown was also dealing with the repercussions of his assault charge for beating his ex girlfriend Rihanna. Even though a Chris Brown tribute to Jackson seemed obligatory, I’m not too sure it would’ve been appropriate for the embattled talent to make the awards ceremony. A year later, people may still question BET’s rationale.

  • Chris Brown Breaks Down At BET Awards During Jackson Tribute

    LOS ANGELES, Calif. --

Chris Brown paid a tearful tribute to Michael Jackson with an emotional performance at the BET Awards on Sunday night.

The star sang and danced through a medley of the late King of Pop’s hits at the awards show, turning tearful during “Man in the Mirror” and drawing a standing ovation from the audience at the Shrine Auditorium in LA – and kudos from Twitter.

“Wow @ChrisBrown did such an amazing MJ tribute,” Kim Kardashian Tweeted. “Amazing job!”

“WOW Chris Brown Congrats Bro, U KILLED THAT GREAT JOB MY brother,” Sean Kingston Tweeted.

Access Hollywood‘s Shaun Robinson, who was on hand at the awards show on Sunday night, was also impressed.

“Everyone here in the audience is talking about how amazing he was,” Shaun said. “I used to love him, then I stopped liking him after [the] Rihanna [incident], but now I’m ready to forgive him. He was great.”

In the wake of his altercation with Rihanna in February 2009, Chris kept a low profile at awards shows that year – including skipping the 2009 BET Awards, which offered a number of tribute performances following the Jackson’s passing.

“Michael Jackson is the reason why I do music and why I am an entertainer,” Chris said to Access in a statement following Michael’s death on June 25, 2009. “I am devastated by this great loss, and I will continue to be humbled and inspired by his legacy. My prayers are with his family. Michael will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. He’s the greatest… the best ever. No one will ever be better.”

The show also featured a stage comeback from Kanye West, in his first awards show performance since his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards – and one from T.I., who had been absent from the stage thanks to serving a prison sentence.

One star who didn’t light up the stage was the absent Justin Bieber, who earned a surprising nomination for Best New Artist.

“This show [in Milwaukee] was booked before the nominees came out, and i dont cancel shows,” he Tweeted on Sunday. “I would never cancel and a show and let down the fans unless I had to.”

He added that he was, however, honored by the unlikely nomination.

“Why did we not plan for the BET Awards?? Well b honest people, not many of u thought the white boy from Canada was gonna b nominated. But just goes to show that Music is COLOR BLIND!! It is the Universal Language and good music brings us all together…the way it should be,” he Tweeted.

Queen Latifah hosted the annual show, which also featured a tribute to Prince and performances by Alicia Keys, Drake and more.
