    Charles Thomson speaks to the performer's colleagues, collaborators and co-stars about his little-known final music video.

    Engineering Michael Jackson Comeback


    In Summer 2003 Michael Jackson and his team were quietly plotting an extraordinary comeback. Amid the tranquil setting of his sprawling Neverland Ranch, Jackson was meeting with his business partners, advisors and publicist on a regular basis to devise plans for a multi-faceted comeback that would re-launch the star into the stratosphere. The comeback would be surprising, seeing Jackson branch into new areas and industries and rehabilitating his image at the same time.
    Michael Jackson's Fallout with Sony


    The past few years had not been kind to Jackson. His 2001 album Invincible had received a mixed critical reaction and had been mocked by the press as a commercial failure. In the Summer of 2002 Jackson had blamed low album sales on his record company, Sony, branding label boss Tommy Mottola 'racist' and 'devilish'. He claimed the label had sabotaged Invincible by failing to promote it and, in a series of speeches, announced his intention to leave the label. However, his public fall-out with Sony had led to further tabloid mockery and his campaign had ultimately fallen flat.

    Negative Publicity from Martin Bashir's Documentary


    Jackson's confidence had been rocked by two further incidents. The singer found himself at the center of a global scandal in November 2002 after pictures of him dangling his son over a hotel balcony in Germany were beamed around the world. He was dealt another blow in February 2003 when Martin Bashir's documentary Living with Michael Jackson caused uproar, showing Jackson holding hands with young cancer patient Gavin Arvizo and admitting to sharing his bed with other people's children. It was at this point that Jackson's camp decided enough was enough.
    Damage Control


    The concern amongst Jackson's advisors was that the singer's name had become little more than a punchline; an easy target for relentless mockery and abuse. His image was in desperate need of repair. The effort began with damage control. Jackson's camp released a rebuttal to Bashir's documentary, featuring footage of the presenter contradicting the views expressed in his own film and proving that he had omitted vital answers from the star. After exposing Bashir's duplicity Jackson's camp followed up with a second documentary, Michael Jackson's Private Home Movies, in which the star presented funny and interesting clips from his archives.


    An appearance at the BET Awards in June 2003 to present his idol and mentor James Brown with a Lifetime Achievement Award contributed to the wave of good PR Jackson was receiving. The star's brief appearance on the show saw audience members burst into tears and it served Jackson well to be seen presenting an award rather than receiving one for once. Things were beginning to look up for the singer and now his elaborate comeback plans could really be put into effect.
    Reinventing Michael Jackson


    "Michael was regaining much of his self-esteem and self-confidence after dwelling in the shadows of public scandal and scorn," says publicist Stuart Backerman, hired by Jackson in 2002. "In the language of marketing, Michael was about to be re-branded.


    "The comeback plan was called the MJ Universe project and it was all about 'the People's Michael', if you want to think of it in political terms. That's what was underpinning this whole scheme. It was about being accessible. After all the years of living as a partial recluse and a tabloid target he wanted to reach out and be seen in an objective way."


    The first step towards making Michael Jackson more accessible would be to create a link between the star and his fans. In Vancouver a web design company called Blast Radius was secretly working on a brand new official Michael Jackson website (his old one was owned and controlled by Sony). The website would contain what Stuart Backerman describes as 'the most unbelievable interactive videos' and would serve as a medium for Jackson to stay in touch with his fans.


    The next step was to open up Jackson's Neverland Ranch. After the Bashir documentary his sanctuary was seen as a sinister place. In order that people could experience Neverland themselves and enjoy a brief glimpse into Jackson's world, the star planned to launch the ranch as a resort for short breaks, generating income as well as improving his image.


    Jackson's merchandising had 'dried up' in recent years, says Backerman, and loose plans were in place to launch several new products, beginning with a Michael Jackson clothing line. He was also in talks with a Japanese investor to design a theme park.
    From Music to Movies


    But the jewel in the crown of Jackson's comeback plans was a deal he and his camp had recently struck with a motion picture company in Montreal. For years it had been Jackson's desire to move away from the music business and into the movie industry. In 1993 he had a deal in place with Sony to begin making movies but the plans were scrapped after Santa Barbara DA Tom Sneddon raided Jackson's home and the star found himself accused of child molestation. In recent years Jackson had made baby steps towards launching himself as a player in the movie world, first making a cameo appearance in Men In Black II and then guest starring in low budget comedy Miss Castaway. Now he was ready to make the leap.


    "He didn't want to really start again with the music," says Dieter Wiesner, Jackson's manager from 1997 until 2003. "After he was done with Sony, he had a whole other plan. His focus was just not that much on the music part anymore. His feeling was that he had really made the best in his life for the music part. He created everything. He made Thriller and things like that and he knew it could be very hard to top these things. For him it was very important to be successful as a director and an actor, directing movies, making short films, things like that. He was really into it.


    "He knew he had to do something for the fans but it was very clear that he couldn't go back on tour because he was mentally not into it anymore. He wanted to do big concerts, say, at the pyramids in Egypt - big places - over two or three years. He agreed to do something like that because the fans really wanted to see him, but he felt his real future should be in the film business."


    After months of negotiations, Jackson's camp had managed to secure financing so the star could purchase Cinegroupe, a Canadian animated features company, which Stuart Backerman says Jackson wanted to turn into 'a whole Pixar type thing'. In anticipation of the takeover, the company had invited Jackson to begin contributing ideas to an upcoming picture, Pinocchio 3000. A decade after his film-making dreams had been squashed, Jackson was finally about to begin making the transition from music to movies. But before that he had one burning priority, and that was to release himself from his Sony contract.


    "He wasn't ever really right back on good terms with Sony," says Stuart Backerman. "The Beatles Catalogue is one thing but after the whole Tommy Mottola business, it was over. It was not gonna really be happening with Sony again."


    According to Dieter Wiesner, Jackson had no plans to move to another label after he fulfilled his contract with Sony. The focus was squarely on movie-making and all signs pointed to the fact that Jackson was serious about achieving his goal. One morning at Neverland Ranch, during the comeback discussions, Jackson presented Stuart Backerman with a signed fedora as a thank you for all his hard work. Inside Jackson had written the inscription, "Dear Stuart, many thanks for your kind help and please don't make plans for the next decade."

    Usher: An eye-popping spectacle, but he’s no Michael Jackson



    Bringing his OMG tour to the first of two Canadian venues, a superstar singer talked the talk, but never came close to walking the moon walk.


    “Not too long ago, I paid tribute to one of the greatest entertainers that ever lived,” said Usher, the guileful crooner and pro-sex supporter. “And I was just wondering, ‘Would you guys mind if I did it again tonight?’”


    He was speaking of Michael Jackson, the deceased king of pop whose throne is left unoccupied. “Do I have your permission,” Usher continued, “to fill his shoes?” The seduced crowd, like a footwear salesman on commission, was obliging, willing to nod and say, “Oh yes, those boots are you,” whether the fit was perfect or not.


    Did Usher fill the sparkly high-tops that appeared on the stage? Of course not – the very act of asking the question gave us the answer. Did Genghis Khan ever say, “Excuse me”? Did Elvis Presley politely ask, “Y’all mind if I give the world a little shake?” And does Oprah ever seek permission for that last slice of pecan pie?


    No, the best ones unhesitatingly take. And while Usher is a highly successful record seller and a generous, physically charismatic performer, he’s no king of anything.


    But hey, he did take to the stage on Monday, in support of his latest hit albums (Raymond v. Raymond and Versus), in a stupendous high-flying way, gliding on a floating metallic platform from the back of the arena to the fore, where he was lowered onto an ultramodern stage by a stuntman’s harness. Athletically built – like a tattooed middleweight boxer – and ruggedly handsome, the self-confident 32-year-old singer-dancer began his eye-popping, carnally charged spectacle garbed Will Smith-like, with a black-leathered post-apocalyptic getup. The career of the Justin Bieber mentor and world’s wiliest R&B artist is certainly on solid ground, so why not shoot for the moon?


    Usher’s music isn’t the most complicated or melodic: He does fashionably rhythmic pop, leisurely undulating foreplay (“slow jams,” in the parlance) and material more ruggedly danceable, some with nuanced hints of reggae.


    More than once, he took his shirt off, as if to say, “Is it hot in here?” To which a lady might answer, “Oh god, yes.” As to what he sang topless about, with his expressive tenor and soulful falsetto, was readily apparent in the song titles: You Make Me Wanna, Hot Tottie, I Need a Girl, Love ’Em All, Bad Girl and Love in This Club.


    I think you get the idea. And if you don’t, opening act Trey Songz certainly does. The sexually keening singer’s overt performance left children puzzled, men emasculated and women practically impregnated. But the American recording artist’s best trick was bringing to the stage Toronto hip-hop sensation Drake. He rhymed a bit, wore a Blue Jays jacket and said nice things about his hometown – all well enough to receive a screaming level of approval that would rival anything earned later by the headliner.


    Would Jackson allow himself to be upstaged in such a way? Better yet, could he have been upstaged in such a way?


    Usher, like MJ before him, relies heavily on an elaborately choreographed production. The athletic performer and eight dancers (four men and four women) worked the hell out of the wide stage. A five-piece band was tucked away in a pit in back; complicated backing vocals were played from a tape. Interludes allowed for costume changes. Dry ice fogged low, confetti fluttered high, lights flashed, flames flew and sparks spewed and showered.


    It was a thrilling exposition, ending with a swirling version of OMG, his popular but by no means historic single. Where Usher is the all-star lover man with a history of urban-radio hits, Jackson was an asexual extraterrestrial with a stunning catalogue of mainstream classics. Can Usher ever measure up to that? Oh my god, no.

    Beatles top poll of defunct acts


    The Beatles rank as the No. 1 defunct act Americans would most like to see in concert, according to survey results released on Monday.


    The late Michael Jackson ranked second, followed by Frank Sinatra and Mozart, said the poll of Americans' attitudes and interests conducted for Vanity Fair and CBS Television's 60 Minutes.


    The Beatles topped those polled with 22 per cent, Jackson scored 20 per cent, Sinatra got 18 per cent and Mozart got 14 per cent.

    A quarter of those polled said they think their life is interesting enough to be given a reality show, while three-quarters of respondents did not think so.

    Auction House Sets Date For Video Preview


    (30-11-2010) As reported here last month, Music memorabilia auction company, SongVest, recently announced they have a rare, never before seen video tape of Michael Jackson and his brothers rehearsing for their 1981 Triumph Tour and they plan to auction it off sometime in December.


    When SongVest first revealed news of the video, they stated that for serious bidders, there would be a private showing of selected clips from the video tape sometime in late November. Now, SongVest has announced the preview date of Dec. 4th. To see the preview of the video you must register at Songvest is a Marketplace to buy and sell Music and Songs and Royalties as Memorabilia at auction.. All registered users will be sent a link on Dec. 4th to view a sneak peak of the video.


    In addition to the tape, SongVest will be offering other MJ items for auction, for instance, Michael's Triumph Tour Jacket and an autographed guitar.


    Items will be auctioned between December 1st and December 18th at songvest.com and you must preregister for the auction on the website. The auction will end at 3:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, December 18, 2010.

    There are some subjects it is unwise to disagree with popular opinion about. Politics, religion, and Michael Jackson are on that list of taboo subjects. However; I have something of a reputation for rushing in where some folks fear to tread. And, I feel a certain obligation to defend my friend, Michael.
    In private conversations with music industry friends I have expressed my opinions concerning Michael's legal problems. Some people have said I am defending "unacceptable behavior." I disagree and point out he was never convicted. I maintain and defend my opinion.
    My relationship with Michael began as business based. I promoted two of his albums. "Thriller" has been the largest selling album of all time for many years. I predict it will continue selling almost unbelievable numbers of copies for many years to come. I promoted both, "Thriller" and "Bad."
    I began our relationship with large amounts of respect and admiration for his talent, showmanship, dedication to his fans, and his innate knowledge of the entertainment industry. His business savvy greatly exceeded his age. As time went on, I developed both a strong fondness for him and a lot of concern for his total inability to recognize envy, greed, and uncontrolled ambition in other people.
    Michael grew up in a surreal fairy tale world. When he was only five years old, he was touring with The Jackson Five. He quickly became a child star. Everything he could dream of except a normal childhood was there for him. He was loved and pampered by everyone around him. He saw hundreds of millions of adoring fans populating his entire universe. He could do no wrong. No harm could befall him. Goodness and mercy surrounded him.
    As he grew older, he applied his business skills and became one of the world's super wealthy. Older more experienced people advised him against paying $600 million for the publishing rights to the early Beetles music catalog. Nobody had ever paid nearly as much for publishing rights. He followed his gut and went against their advice. It has proven to be a very astute business move. His many decisions concerning the composition, production, presentation, and promotion of "Thriller" were equally astute.
    His downfall and early death sprang from that same fairy tale life. He had more than enough money to buy anything he could imagine. There was nobody for him to envy. He had it all. He was by nature a truly considerate and compassionate person. He had achieved his amazing success without harming anyone. He had lived in a world that was sheltered and isolated from mean and angry people.
    The negative emotions of fear, envy, greed, and uncontrolled ambitions were alien concepts to him. He had never been the carrier or victim of such thoughts and feelings. He understood the meaning of those concepts the same way most people understand war. They were bad things that happened far away to people he did not know. They existed in a world he had never been exposed to.
    I tried to explain bad people to him. I told him there are two ways to have the tallest tree in town. Loving people do so, by planting, nurturing, and caring for their trees. Maladjusted, angry, envious, blindly ambitious, and bitter people do so by cutting down everyone else's tall trees. He just shot me that famous smile, rolled his eyes, and said, "You should have more faith in our fellow man."
    Michael loved people. He especially loved children. He enjoyed being around children. It provided a vicarious way of experiencing the "normal" childhood he never experienced. Children shared an innocence his fairy tale life had left intact within him. Other adults had lost that innocence. The advice I offered proved my own fall from grace. I and those who offered similar warnings were cynical and unable to see all the love and beauty surrounding him and each of us.
    Michael's first exposure to the evil side of people was the original accusation of child molestation. In his mind, it was a very rare aberration. It was not indicative of people in general. He adopted the Christly response of, "Forgive them, Father. They know not what they do." He responded to the parents' greed with loving kindness. He gave them a few million dollars. Perhaps; it would allow them to grow, be happy, and lay down their ways of sin. If nothing else; it would teach them how insignificant a few million dollars were.
    I tried to warn him the out of court settlement marked him as an easy target for similar people. I said other greedy parents would be willing to use their children to extort greater amounts. He had not lost his faith in love and goodness. The fact two poor misguided parents had given in to greed did not mean others would behave in a similar fashion.
    I pointed out the long established career paths of many politicians. The successful prosecution of celebrities has taken many unscrupulous blindly ambitious politicians into higher more powerful offices. Power hunger has driven bad people to do anything imaginable to acquire and abuse power over ever increasing numbers of regular people. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Prosecuting attorneys have near absolute power.
    Of course; it did happen again. Another set of parents was willing to rob their child of innocence. Another power hungry prosecutor viciously used Michael in a bid for higher office. The international broadcast news media used his misfortune to raise audience ratings. They joined in the effort to smear what was left of his reputation. They became foul smelling vultures feasting on the bleeding flesh of a magnificent and graceful antelope.
    Michael won the battle, but lost his faith in the fundamental goodness of humanity. He left the country of his birth. He changed his entire life. He ran to avoid the next accusation and trial. He knew it would come, if he remained here. This country he loved so much was no longer safe. He knew would be tormented by a long string of prosecuting attorneys. Each seeking to be the one who put that "menace to society" behind bars.
    I fully expected the international media report his death was linked to drug abuse. It was linked. However; I know the true cause of his death. My friend died from a broken heart. He could not live in the vicious greedy world he was immersed in. The exposure to greed, envy, and run away ambition came too late in life. He never had a chance to develop the immunity most of us develop at a much younger age.
    His death has deprived our world of a great talent, a truly kind and generous person, and the most innocent adult I have ever known. I hope the parents and prosecutors who did this to us find themselves in the worse part of Dante's Inferno.
    As a closing comment I am compelled to say, "Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee."
