DESIGNER Christian Audigier was a few hours from opening his first nightclub last week, a swanky spread that looks out at the Las Vegas Strip from Treasure Island, but he was already moving past all that. He's got loftier plans.

Much loftier. An airline, in fact.

"It's going to be nice, comfortable, with nice waitresses and nice food, a cool drink and a nice movie," Audigier says, igniting one of three cigarettes laid out neatly for him by an assistant along with a yellow lighter. "I'm talking to different people. I'm not ready yet, but I'm going to do that."

Uh, OK. It's hard to comprehend how a fashion impresario -- even one responsible for the stunningly successful Von Dutch and Ed Hardy lines -- could pull off such an endeavor. Then again, as he explained this, he was sitting on the terrace of his eponymous nightclub. He also has a development deal to build a 36-story hotel with his name on it in Dubai.

So, really, who's to doubt the man at the center of one of the most meteoric rises in fashion history, a designer unknown to Americans a decade ago but who in May was regaled at his 50th birthday by the likes of clients Snoop Dogg, Fergie and Macy Gray? Michael Jackson showed up unexpectedly, declared Audigier the new King of Fashion and is now in talks for a Jackson-branded Audigier line.

"It's gonna be the new look of Michael, of course," Audigier says. "He's preparing a new album and a new tour, and I'm working on a collection to celebrate all the icons of rock, pop and funk. This is what I want to do in my collection for him."

  • Michael Jackson ... would his name sell clothes or accessories?

    By Linda Miller, Fashion Editor

Would you buy a piece of clothing because it had a Michael Jackson label in it?

Believe it or not, Jackson is said to be flirting with the idea of a celebrity designer line.

And he's not the only one.

Celebrity designer lines are sprouting faster than weeds in the spring. According to Women’s Wear Daily, there’s more than 50, with six or 10 more celebrities, including Jackson, mulling the idea.

Who knew actress Jaclyn Smith was on to something big in 1985 when she put her name on a brand of clothing for Kmart.

Fast-forward 23 years, and the number of celebrities with their own fashion lines could fill People magazine. These days, Smith is overshadowed by the Olsen sisters, Beyonce Knowles, Gwen Stefani, Kate Moss, Justin Timberlake, Victoria Beckham, Lauren Conrad and dozens of other singers and actors who have signed apparel deals.

Others said to be interested in dipping a toe in the fashion pool include Matthew McConaughey, Katie Holmes and Miley Cyrus.

While a few celebrities are more involved in design decisions than others, most seem content to stay out of the way and relish the cash and the publicity that come from their name and face being tied to a brand.

Name recognition doesn't automatically ring up sales, though. Clothing lines by Scarlett Johansson and Mandy Moore unraveled. Even Jennifer Lopez and Sean "Diddy" Combs struggle with their apparel collections at times.

Still, celebrity designer lines are lucrative and popular. David Wolfe, creative director of the Donegar Group, a New York-based trend forecasting company, said he feels that the proliferation of celebrity designer lines is a result of a lack of clear direction in fashion.

"Because there are so many trends, so many looks and everything seems to be 'in,' the average shopper is confused. Therefore, it helps her to identify with a celeb's style and thus helps the shopper sort through the masses of merchandise available everywhere today," he said.

It will be interesting to see whether enough people identify with Michael Jackson's style to keep him in the fashion game.

  • schade eigentlich

Michael for Lagerfeld .. ist echt ne gute Idee :)
